Job Title: Journeyperson Plumber

Overview As a Journeyperson Plumber, you will be responsible for the installation,
maintenance, and repair of pipes, fixtures, and plumbing equipment in residential,
commercial, and industrial structures. You may work in maintenance departments of
factories, plants, and similar establishments.

Duties & Responsibilities:
● Review blueprints, drawings, and specifications to plan the layout of plumbing systems, water supply
networks, and drainage systems.
● Install, repair, and maintain plumbing fixtures and systems in residential, commercial, or industrial
settings.
● Identify and mark positions for pipe connections and fixtures on walls and floors.
● Cut openings in walls and floors for pipes and fittings.
● Utilize hand and power tools or machines to measure, cut, bend, and thread pipes.
● Connect pipes using various methods such as couplings, clamps, screws, bolts, and soldering or
welding equipment.
● Test pipes for leaks using air and water pressure gauges.
● Occasionally, provide cost estimates.
Qualifications:
● A High school diploma is necessary.
● Eligibility for trade certification usually requires completion of a four- to five-year apprenticeship
program or a mix of over five years of trade experience with some high school, college, or industry
courses in plumbing.
● Mandatory trade certification is required in Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick,
Quebec, Ontario, Saskatchewan, and Alberta. In Newfoundland and Labrador, Manitoba, British
Columbia, the Yukon, the Northwest Territories, and Nunavut, trade certification is available but
voluntary.
● Qualified plumbers can obtain a Red Seal endorsement by successfully completing the interprovincial
Red Seal examination.
● Proficiency in English communication at a CLB 6 level is a prerequisite.
Duties & Responsibilities:
● Review engineering and architectural drawings, sketches, and work specifications, then lay out, measure,
and mark sheet metal based on these documents or templates.
● Develop sheet metal patterns via the utilization of computer-assisted design and drafting (CAD) software.
● Operate light metalworking machinery, including shears, brakes, punches, and drill presses, including
computer numerical control (CNC) equipment, to cut, bend, punch, drill, shape, or straighten sheet metal.
● Utilize computerized laser or plasma cutting equipment for precise cutting.
● Use rigging and hoisting equipment during the installation process.
● Fit and connect sheet metal components through processes such as riveting, welding, and soldering to
create products like ventilation shafts, exhaust hoods, eavestroughs, partition frames, air and heat ducts,
material handling systems, roof decking, and sheet metal buildings.
● Install sheet metal products according to specifications and building codes, ensuring quality through
inspections.
● Perform finishing tasks such as grinding and buffing on seams, joints, and surfaces.
Qualifications:
● Completion of secondary school is required, followed by a three to five-year apprenticeship program or a
combination of over four years of relevant work experience along with some high school, college, or industry
courses in sheet metal working.
● Trade certification for sheet metal workers is mandatory in New Brunswick, Quebec, Ontario,
Saskatchewan, and Alberta, and optional in other provinces and territories.
● Qualified sheet metal workers can obtain a Red Seal endorsement through successful completion of the
interprovincial Red Seal examination.
● Proficiency in English communication at a CLB 6 level is a prerequisite.

Overview As a Sheet metal worker, you may be responsible for constructing, assembling, installing,
and mending sheet metal products. Apprentices are also part of this occupational
category.
