Obstacle: Water & Mud

When you introduce a new obstacle to your horse, find a starting point. Don’t try to make him go in the deepest water or mud, the highest hills or the deepest gullies.
Start with something little, build your horse’s confidence first and then move onto a more difficult obstacle.

When you introduce water and mud to your horse for the first time, start with a little puddle. The reason why horses are so afraid of water is because they have a very poor depth perception. So they can’t guess how deep that water is.
And the mud scares the horses because it’s slippery and when the horse steps in it, it creates a vacuum and it restricts the horse’s movement for a split second.

When your horse is comfortable crossing through the water and the mud, if they offer to stand still in it and get a rest, let them. Let them to investigate it. Make them realize that they get a rest when they go in it.
