I got to spend the morning picking flowers up at the stunning again today and have come home with so many beautiful blooms for our Christmas bunches! Right on the edge of the suburbs but feels like you’re in the middle of the countryside and so so peaceful. Have you ordered your flowers yet? We’ve had to start chicken proofing the flower beds this week 🐓 Much as I wanted to let them completely free range, they love wandering through the flower beds and have accidentally snapped the lower branches off my almost flowering dahlias, cosmos and zinnias. The shelving from the old greenhouses has worked well for the floret dahlias, though they still snack on the leaves. Tomorrow we’re replacing the jute netting with chicken wire as they’d found their way through it straight away 🤦‍♀️

It’s time to order your Christmas flowers 💐

This Christmas we’ve teamed up with to be able to bring you even more locally grown flowers. Our Christmas bouquets this year will feature a mix of flowers grown here on our urban flower farm in West Croydon, additional blooms from historic Marybank Estate, foliage from my parents property in the Adelaide Hills, and of course the traditional sprig of holly.

Available for pick up from the verandah honesty stall on Monday 23rd and Tuesday 24th December.

We added two more chicks to our brood this week. Introducing Hen Kinkley (white) and Flakey (black & gold). Miss W’s class had a project this term of hatching chickens and learning about them. All 10 eggs hatched and we’ve adopted two of the chicks. They’re too young to be outside with the others permanently at this stage so currently sleep inside and are kept seperate from our original three when outside. Having been born and spent the first four weeks of their lives in a classroom though they’re much happier being picked up and patted and have even started jumping into our laps for a cuddle 🥰 We don’t know for sure if they’re both girls yet but I really hope they are!

Fresh flowers have landed at 💐 This week’s bunches feature some stunning sunflowers, amaranth and celosia from that I was lucky enough to get access to. I feel very thankful to be able to work with other local growers when my big flowers aren’t quite ready yet, and Marybank is one of the closest to us being based in Montacute. Special Christmas news coming soon too so make sure you’re signed up to our newsletter for first access. Spent this morning up at the wonderful and feel very privileged to come home with a bucket full of Brie’s beautiful blooms. I can’t wait to use them in this week’s bouquets! Marybank is a gorgeous historical property right on the edge of the hills in Rostrevor, with beautiful gardens, a vineyard and is Adelaide’s best wedding venue (I might be biased as it’s where we got married).

I’m challenging myself to show more behind the scenes of our urban flower farm, rather than just pictures of pretty flowers all the time. This is our swing patch, so named because when we bought our house it was a large section of bark chips with a swing set in the middle. No shade so horrendously hot in the middle of summer and the swings barely got used. We moved the swings under the pergola and converted it into flower beds. Anyway, it’s three rows each 1 metre wide and approximately 4 metres long. Currently a mix of spring flowers in various stages of growth, summer flowers that are in the process of being cut down, and self seeded plants that are a bit out of control!
