Swipe to see Frankie’s clean teeth from daily tooth brushing! ➜

Frankie is a 13 year old chihuahua cross and his dedicated owner has been brushing his teeth daily for years. As the second photo shows, he has no calculus build up on his canine and incisor teeth - an excellent outcome from brushing!

For your pet to benefit from tooth brushing, it must be done at least 3-4 times a week, with daily brushing being gold standard.

We understand this can be a tricky task for some pets and our friendly team are here to help! Contact us on 8365 5010 to speak with our staff about brushing your pets teeth today 🪥

Patient Spotlight: Winnie 💛

Meet Winnie, the sweetest little Golden Retriever puppy. At just 8 weeks old, Winnie had a tumble off the couch that left her unable to put weight on her leg. After some X-rays, we discovered she had a spiral fracture in her tibia. (Swipe to see her X-rays)

A splint was carefully placed to help her leg heal, and with plenty of TLC from her superstar owners (plus endless cuddles, which Winnie thoroughly approved of), she was on the road to recovery.

Fast forward a month, and this brave girl got the all clear to return to her playful puppy self - though maybe with a little more caution around couches.

We’re so proud of Winnie and her wonderful family for their dedication to her healing journey 💕🐶

The next image is an X-ray of her back leg, with a red arrow pointing to a spiral fracture in her tibia. The final photo shows her resting in a cushioned bed, wearing a recovery cone and a bright pink splint with purple paw prints in her leg.

🦷 Dental Care Series - Why fractured teeth need immediate care.

This tooth belongs to a sweet Labradoodle. She visited Newton Vet Centre for a routine consultation, and during the check-up discovered she had fractured a tooth.

When a fracture is severe enough to cause pulp exposure - the soft centre of the tooth containing blood vessels and nerves - it can become painful. This creates a direct pathway for bacteria to enter the tooth, leading to infection or even an abscess if left untreated.

👉 Signs of dental pain can include: chewing on one side, dropping food, pawing at the mouth, bad breath, or swelling. Some pets don’t show any signs at all.

Very hard chews like antlers, horns, and bones often cause dental fractures. Here is a simple rule of thumb: If you can’t bend a chew with your hands or indent it with your fingernail, it’s too hard for your dog’s teeth!

Routine check-ups with our friendly vets are key to catching painful problems early, and keeping your beloved pets happy and healthy. 🐶🦷

🐾 Tiny paws, big milestones! 🐾

We had the absolute pleasure of seeing four beautiful 6-week-old Cavoodle puppies from poochiecavoodles. They came in for their first vet check, vaccination, and microchipping with Dr Suzie - such a big step in setting them all up for a lifetime of happiness!

These little ones were bursting with personality, full of curiosity, and of course, plenty of tail wags. Because we are a small, independent clinic, we love taking the time to get to know each and every pet as an individual - not just another appointment.

We cannot wait to see these cuties grow into their new families’ best friends! 💖

🐾💛 Maple’s Big Girl Moment 💛🐾

This gorgeous 1 year old had her desexing procedure recently, and is already back to her normal active self and giving plenty of cuddles to her family.

Thinking about desexing your pet? Our friendly vets can guide you with a tailored plan that best suits your pet’s age, health, and lifestyle.

Maple had already experienced her first heat before her recommended desexing age - which is common for medium to large breeds when we wait a little longer than 6 months to desex. Desexing larger dogs later can support healthy joint development and may reduce the risk of some orthopaedic problems later in life❗️

Maple may not be considered a puppy anymore, but she sure knows how to give her best ‘puppy eyes’ to score extra cuddles and kisses from the team.

You may be thinking ‘what is the reason for the colourful leg bandages’ in our photos. And the answer is an important one:

For various situations, most commonly when we are anaesthetising a patient, we need to place an intravenous (IV) line (sometimes called a catheter or cannula).
This is required because:
1) many medications are given directly into the vein, and this gives us safe and fast access
2) all patients undergoing anaesthesia in our clinic receive IV fluids, which helps maintain circulation to the tissues, support blood pressure, and prevent dehydration.

It is important to clip the hair away prior to placing an IV line because we need to disinfect the skin to help reduce the chances of infection. With many types of coats, it is difficult to see the vein without clipping. It also helps us to secure the line with tape.

In this photo, we can see a green bandage over Jayda’s foreleg, matching her beautiful green eyes! 💚 This is covering her IV line, which she had placed prior to her dental procedure. The line is left in place until the patient is recovered, so we can give them additional medications or fluids as needed.

If there’s any questions you would like answered, let us know in the comments!
