This is a great little read about how, like humans, dogs can hold unprocessed trauma in their body/ tissue/ nervous system/ immune system etc.
I don’t know much about this trauma sensitive movement, but I suspect we observe dogs doing it naturally to help regulate themselves. It’s why I love techniques of connection like craniosacral and Orthobionomy because they can help the body integrate the dis-ease.

By Dr. Laura Donaldson, PhD, CDBC, KPA CTP. According to Dr. Bessel van der Kolk (2014), renowned trauma specialist and author of The Body Keeps the Score: "Trauma is much more than a story about

Canine Behavioural School Inc.where I’m learning dog training ran an awesome workshop for the volunteers on the weekend- all positive reinforcement, all fun and a lot of challenge.
It’s so beautiful to watch the connection between these dogs and their people. The highlight for me was watching shaping’ in action- introducing a new object to a dog with a plan of what you want them to do with it, then watching the dog work it out as you reinforce incremental approximations until they eventually are doing the whole action, like picking up a toy and putting it in a basket 😊

Just like it’s important to stop before the pain starts with an exercise, it’s important to stop exposure to triggers for a dog well before their threshold. You can do this by managing the distance, duration, other stimuli etc etc

Little choices through my day like which cake will I eat and where will I have my coffee are really important to me 😊
How many little opportunities for safe choice can you create for your dog?

Choice in relation to companion dogs is often a misunderstood topic!

Giving dogs choices is one of the best ways to empower them and improve their well-being—but choice should always come with safety.

✅ Let them choose their walking route
✅ Allow them to opt in or out of handling
✅ Provide different resting spots
✅ Give them options of toys, chews and food
✅ Let them ask (and receive) affection when they need it

Choice doesn’t mean unlimited freedom—it means setting up their environment so they can make decisions without putting themselves at risk.

Choice helps our dogs build confidence, reduce stress, and develop trust in you.

Of course, as is everything with behavior... this is incredibly nuanced.

What did you notice first? The one thing that was wrong? Or the hundreds of other things that were right?

It's human nature to notice the negative. To notice errors, no matter how trivial. To notice when something isn't done, but rarely acknowledge when it is. To complain about bad service but let good service pass unremarked.

And we do it with our dogs too. We take the good stuff for granted (or perhaps we don't even consciously see it?) but complain when they do one 'wrong' thing. Every single one of these green ticks represents a 'rewardable' moment...but how many actually get rewarded? But the one instance of 'bad' behaviour....you can bet your bottom dollar we notice that!

Do you see your dog's good behaviour? Do you reward it? Because if you don't you might start seeing fewer ticks and more crosses....
