Just like it’s important to stop before the pain starts with an exercise, it’s important to stop exposure to triggers for a dog well before their threshold. You can do this by managing the distance, duration, other stimuli etc etc

Little choices through my day like which cake will I eat and where will I have my coffee are really important to me 😊
How many little opportunities for safe choice can you create for your dog?

Choice in relation to companion dogs is often a misunderstood topic!

Giving dogs choices is one of the best ways to empower them and improve their well-being—but choice should always come with safety.

✅ Let them choose their walking route
✅ Allow them to opt in or out of handling
✅ Provide different resting spots
✅ Give them options of toys, chews and food
✅ Let them ask (and receive) affection when they need it

Choice doesn’t mean unlimited freedom—it means setting up their environment so they can make decisions without putting themselves at risk.

Choice helps our dogs build confidence, reduce stress, and develop trust in you.

Of course, as is everything with behavior... this is incredibly nuanced.

What did you notice first? The one thing that was wrong? Or the hundreds of other things that were right?

It's human nature to notice the negative. To notice errors, no matter how trivial. To notice when something isn't done, but rarely acknowledge when it is. To complain about bad service but let good service pass unremarked.

And we do it with our dogs too. We take the good stuff for granted (or perhaps we don't even consciously see it?) but complain when they do one 'wrong' thing. Every single one of these green ticks represents a 'rewardable' moment...but how many actually get rewarded? But the one instance of 'bad' behaviour....you can bet your bottom dollar we notice that!

Do you see your dog's good behaviour? Do you reward it? Because if you don't you might start seeing fewer ticks and more crosses....

Full disclosure- I might be a bit biased ( I volunteer there 😊)

Love horses. Not racing.
One horse dies because of a catastrophic injury on the track every 2.4 days.
Thousands die every year because they’re too slow and considered wastage by the racing industry.
Please do something kind today instead of supporting the Melbourne cup cruelty.

Please retract the retractable leashes!

They’re dangerous for you and your dog:
-throat and neck injuries for your dog ( may not happen every day but when it does happen it is very serious)
- counterproductive to all of the loose lead walking you are training by providing a situation where your dog to has to pull
- risk of injury to you when the thin cord snaps ( look at that photo- yikes!) or you try to grab the thin cord
- risk to others when the thin cord gets tangled with other dogs or people and tightens around them
- risk to your dog if the large clumsy ‘handle’ drops … you better have reliable recall when theyre suddenly free to run far far away….

Pet expert Steve Dale would like to see retractable leashes banned, and most dog trainers agree. Here's a horrific story as one example

Dogs need more sleep than we do because they spend a smaller % of their sleep time in deep sleep…. I know how my brain and body feels when I don’t get enough sleep (crap)…. In our busy lives it’s important to give our dogs time and space to get enough sleep ❤️

Make sure your dog is catching enough 💤😴

These nose works classes might be of interest if you’re in Adelaide. Great for the dog’s neuro system- wires calmer and less anxious pathways. And it’s fun ❤️

There are a few spaces available for Introduction to Nosework course starting Thursday 17th October, 6.30pm.

Hope to see you and your doggos at the Vegan Festival Adelaide sat 7th or sun 8th December 😊

We would love to see you on Saturday 7 & Sunday 8 December.
And your friends.
And your dogs.
(especially your dogs!)

🐾 Vegan Festival Adelaide is back! While we love having your fur companions join us, we also understand that large crowds can be overwhelming for some pups, so if your dog prefers a quieter scene, it might be best to leave them at home.

💚 As always, our festival promotes kindness to all. We kindly ask that any dogs joining us aren’t wearing choker chains, slip leads, check chains, or (yikes) prong or shock collars. If you need any guidance, connect with your local canine behaviour school for tips on positive methods. Let's make this a day of compassion for everyone! 🌱🐕

***we understand that there may be discussion on this and greyhounds for example have different needs. we are trying our very best and ask some kindness be directed to organisers too.
