Rocky saying a slobbery thank-you for using numbing cream for his blood test.

Why do vets do blood tests?
They give us a lot more information about a patient than a physical exam alone.
They are useful for diagnosing and monitoring illness as well as providing base-lines for their general wellbeing.

How do I do blood tests without a nurse?💉

Surprisingly, a lot of pets tolerate blood tests better when they are not terrified 🤔🤗
I use simple tricks like treats and numbing cream.
Sometimes I use mild sedation prior to the visit.
Often I use a muzzle or wrap for my own safety.
Occasionally I make the judgement to not do them, and refer to a clinic.

Rocky however, was a champion. Yay Rocky !!! 🏆

Hi. I am Edna’s Vet. My name is Dr Amanda (Edna is my dog 🐶) and I am a small animal veterinarian in Adelaide who does house-calls.

Many of my clients prefer the convenience of a house-call because they themselves have mobility challenges; from physical disabilities or not driving, to having small children in tow.

Edna’s Vet also does end of life care. Euthanasia at home is a much kinder option for your pets. Palliative care and assessing your pets quality of life are things that are almost always done better in the home setting.

Dr Amanda will be away next week from Monday September 16th, and will return the following week.

You will still be able to speak to our lovely vet nurse, Rebecca on 0414 871 855 during normal hours.

We also have a brilliant veterinarian available for Telemedicine appointments; many of you may already know Dr Arielle Bridges 👩‍⚕️☺️

And most importantly, Edna the mini groodle will still be getting lots of walks on the beach and cuddles 🥰

Apologies..

The Edna’s Vet team uses call forwarding so that when you call us on 0414 871 855 you speak to the person manning the phones at that particular time.
Today I accidentally forwarded the phones to a random person in Tasmania 😬

So I am sorry to all of you who tried to call us today and instead got a very confused person on the end of the line.
And I am even sorrier to the poor person who received multiple calls today from worried pet owners.

Thank you to the people who informed me via email of the this mix-up 🙏
I am going to relax for the weekend then try harder next week 😖🌸

Saying good-bye to a beloved pet is heart-breaking. If you are making the difficult decision to euthanase your pet there are some things you may not have thought of that may help make the passing feel more special to you and peaceful for your pet.

1. The location. Ideally choose somewhere that your pet feels is familiar and where you may grieve privately. It may be in your garden or in the living room on the couch; wherever your pet feels most comfortable on the day.
2. The people. You may wish to have close family or friends present at the passing of your pet, to share in your grief or to help support you afterwards. It is not unusual to have absent family or friends be present via zoom or FaceTime. Children often wish to be present, and this is perfectly ok. Equally, you may choose not to be there as it is too difficult. We do recommend someone familiar to your pet stays until at least they start to become sleepy.
3. Food - if your pet still wants to eat, just before the euthanasia is the time to eat all the good things (chocolate, wagyu beef, caviar, peanut butter, fried chicken, pizza, bacon: whatever takes your pet’s fancy )
4. Mood - this is very personal and different for everyone but often people play soft music, light a candle, or have the TV on in the background quietly because that is what is most normal for their home and their pet.
5. Memoirs. You may wish to take photos before or afterwards of your pet, or keep a bit of fur. This is not weird, a lot of people do it and treasure the pictures afterwards. Do not be afraid to ask. Some people write letters to their pet that may go with them for cremation or burial, telling them how much they are loved. Children often like to draw pictures to send off with their beloved pet. Perhaps a small toy or photo may be something that stays with them.

A 1kg chihuahua that took her vaccines like a 70kg Rottweiller 👊🏆

(Just quietly - I’m not sure what scares me more - a scared 1kg chihuahua or a scared 70kg rottweiller!! 🤣😳 - luckily Chicargo loved her home-vet-visit!! 😅 )

It was so nice to meet Halo 💕

She loves life and she loves going to the vet but she also likes to tell everyone all about it and barks constantly during her visits 🙉🙉🙉😅

Archer is a happy 15 years old Staffy.

He has typical old-dog ailments; arthritis, lumps and dental problems but overall he is very well for his age.

After a visit from Edna’s Vet this week, he is feeling more spritely already.

Improving the wellbeing of old patients is a wonderful thing 🥰
