Paws & Reward

Paws & Reward Positive Training for People and Their Pets! Group classes for dogs of all ages and private consults for dogs and cats. Everyone wins.

My training philosophy begins with kindness to both people and animals. No one will be yelled at for not knowing what to do or making mistakes. My focus is on helping you understand what your dog or cat wants and needs, while also equipping your pet with the skills he or she needs to be comfortable and happy in your family. The goal is for you and your pet to enjoy fulfilled and enriched lives tog

ether. My training focuses on three areas to achieve behavioural change: management, relationships and training:

- Management: I will set your pet up for success. This involves short and long term strategies, such as crates, gates, exercise, vet visits etc. This helps prevent problems from developing.

- Relationship: refers to the pet-owner relationship being a partnership rather than being viewed as one party dominating another. Think of it as you and your pet being in a dance. As the owners, it is your job to give clear instructions to your dog or cat. This will avoid confusion, which often leads to stress.

- Training: I use positive reinforcement training because research has consistently shown it to be the most effective way to teach an animal the desired behaviours and learn new tasks. Positive reinforcement involves reinforcing desirable behaviours and ignoring, redirecting or preventing undesirable behaviour. This training strategy makes any situation better because it fills in the gaps for your pet on what you want her or him to do instead of what you don't want her or him to do. To do this, we’ll use anything your individual pet would welcome more of (food, toys, attention, petting, etc.). Behaviour you like is matched with things your dog likes. I don’t have a use for choke chains, electric collars or any other equipment that needs the dog to fail in order to serve its purpose of “correcting.”

💔 A Change of Plans

I was planning to share some dog training insights today, but my heart is elsewhere. My home country, Sweden, has just experienced the worst mass shooting in its history. It’s a devastating reminder of how fragile and unpredictable life can be.

My thoughts are with my fellow Swedes during this incredibly difficult time. In moments like these, I think it’s more important than ever to lead with kindness and empathy—toward each other and the animals we share our lives with. We are all fumbling our way through this world, and while there is so much darkness, there is also light.

Let’s hold onto the good things—the people we love, the moments of joy, and the animals who look to us for guidance in navigating this place we call home.

Take care of each other. 💙💛

🌟 Exciting News at Paws & Reward! 🌟

I’m absolutely delighted to announce that Lisa will be joining Paws & Reward as a valued member of the team next month! With her extensive experience in both dog training and veterinary nursing, Lisa brings a wealth of knowledge to our programs.

Lisa graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Animal Science from the University of Adelaide in 2019 before diving into the veterinary industry, where she completed her Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing. With over five years of experience as a Vet Nurse, she’s developed a special interest in dentistry and puppy owner education.

It was while running Puppy Pre-School classes that Lisa recognised the importance of equipping puppy parents with the right knowledge and skills to raise happy, well-rounded pups. Lisa’s training interests include appropriate socialisation, enrichment, cooperative care, and continued obedience.

As a puppy parent to her American Staffordshire Terrier, Omen, Lisa has gained a deeper appreciation for the joys and challenges of dog ownership. 🐶

Going forward, Lisa and I will both be running the Puppy College and Snake Aware programs, ensuring that your dog receives expert guidance and care every step of the way. We’re both committed to providing a personalised and supportive experience to help your dogs thrive! 🐾💙

Stay tunes for more exciting business updates!

Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to source enough Brown Snake sheds to supply beyond my current course. If anyone has suggestions on where I might be able to find more in the future, I’d greatly appreciate it!

Thanks! 🐍

🎉🐾 Congratulations to Millie and Rex on completing their training programs this week! 🐾🎉

It's been such a pleasure working with both of these amazing dogs and their dedicated owners. Millie completed the Cautious Canines Program, and Rex finished the Feisty Fido Program. Both dogs and their families have made incredible progress!

Sweet Millie started out nervous and unsure, pacing and seeking comfort from the other dog in the home. But after just three sessions, she's a completely different dog! She's now confidently engaging in training, feeling more relaxed and secure. 🐶❤️

Rex, on the other hand, used to have strong feelings about seeing other dogs, barking and lunging to get them to move away. Now, he's much calmer and more focused, enjoying walks with his owners without the added stress. 🐕

A huge thank you to the owners for their commitment to the process! Their hard work, consistency, and attention to the training and management recommendations have made a huge difference for both dogs. I'm so proud of all the progress they've made! 🌟

🌟 A huge THANK YOU to Reactive Paws for creating the amazing "Give Me Space" and "Anxious" bandanas for the dogs enrolled in my Feisty Fido and Cautious Canines programs! 🙌💙 These bandanas are not just stylish—they’re also an invaluable tool in helping our dogs communicate their needs and stay safe while working through their challenges.

The thoughtful design and message help create awareness in our community, making walks and training sessions smoother for everyone involved. 🙌

🌟 Exciting Opportunity: Looking for a Dog Trainer to Join the Team! 🌟

Over the past few months, it’s become clear that, despite my best attempts, I simply can’t do it all! Paws & Reward is my baby, and letting go of some reins is both exciting and challenging. I’ve built this business from the ground up with so much love and care, and whoever joins the team must be equally passionate, dedicated, and professional in helping pets and their families thrive.

So, I’m tentatively putting out feelers to find the right person to join Paws & Reward next year. Ideally, someone with experience in both training dogs and teaching people, who is friendly, committed, and excited to help with my Puppy College and Snake Aware group classes.

If you or someone you know has a love for dog training and wants to be part of a growing, purpose-driven business, please get in touch. I’d love to hear from you! 💌

Tag your friends or share this post if you know someone who would be a perfect fit. Thank you! 🐾✨

🎓🐾 A Big Congratulations to our Final Puppy College Graduates of 2024! 🐾🎓

This group faced a busy lead-up to Christmas, but they still showed up, gave it their best, and made progress every step of the way! 🎄👏 Each pup (and their paw-rents) worked hard to lay those important foundations, even amidst the holiday hustle.

🐶 Highlights of Puppy College:
✨ Walking nicely on a lead
✨ Coming when called
✨ Settling on a mat
✨ Sitting, dropping, and staying
✨ Leaving things they shouldn’t touch
… and most importantly, building a stronger bond with their humans!

Now they’ve got all the tools—and detailed notes!—to revisit once the Christmas madness settles down. With a little consistency, I know they’ll continue to shine!

💡 Next Puppy College starts on Saturday, January 11th!
🐾 9:00 AM Class – FULL
🐾 10:20 AM Class – Some spots still available!

I can’t wait to see more pups thrive in 2025. Book your spot today, and let’s kick off the new year with happy, well-behaved puppies! 🐕🎉

Choosing the Right Trainer for You and Your Dog

You love your dog. You want the best for them—the healthiest food, the tastiest treats, the softest beds.

You want the best dog trainer, too, but with so much conflicting information and advice swirling around out there, how do you choose?

2 Things You Should Know:

Dog Training Is Unregulated: Unlike your doctor, lawyer, and vet, dog trainers have no official regulating body. That means no required education, no enforced best practices, and no ethics oversight. The results are vast variations in dog trainers’ skills, knowledge, and methodologies – and a confusing chaos of advice.

Methodology Matters: While the lack of regulation means trainers don’t have to adhere to the science of behavior and training, the science itself is clear about how dogs learn and how best to teach them.

Decades of research show that reward-based, force-free dog training is the only approach to changing behavior that comes without unwanted behavioural side effects, risk of physical harm, and potential damage to the relationship between dogs and their people.

3 Tips for Screening a Trainer:

Listen to Language: Look for trainers who use terms like “reward-based” or “positive reinforcement.” Avoid terms like “balanced” or “alpha,” which hint at outdated methods.

Beware of Guarantees: No one can guarantee specific results. A true professional focuses on helping you and your dog succeed without making false promises.

Look for Credentials: Professional trainers invest in ongoing education. Ask about their qualifications and continuous learning.

5 Questions to Ask:
-What are your qualifications?
-What training methods do you use?
-What tools do you recommend?
-How do you handle mistakes?
-Do you guarantee results?

1 More Thing…
Your trainer should be supportive and invested in your success. Training should be fun for both you and your dog!

Ready to choose your dog trainer?
If you're looking for a trainer who cares about your dog's success, I'd love to hear from you! https://pawsandreward.com.au/

🚨 EXCITING NEWS! 🚨

I’m thrilled to share that I’ve officially completed the Aggression in Dogs Master Course taught by the world-renowned expert, Michael Shikashio! 🎓🐕 This is the gold standard for trainers and behavior consultants worldwide, offering the most comprehensive education on understanding and managing dog aggression—and I couldn’t be more excited to have this under my belt!

💭 Why did I take this step?
A few months ago, I had a sobering experience with a client’s dog that made me question everything. I moved too quickly in a session, even though I knew the dog wasn’t fully comfortable with me being there. With two layers of management in place—a muzzle and lead—I thought it would be okay. But when the owner accidentally dropped the lead, things escalated. Before I knew it, a big German Shepherd was coming straight at me. If it weren’t for the muzzle, I don’t even want to imagine how badly that could have ended.

That moment, paired with the everyday pressures of running a business, left me at a crossroads. For a while, I seriously considered stepping away from aggression cases—or even closing down Paws & Reward altogether. But after a lot of reflection, I realized something important: this work is my passion. Helping dogs with fear and aggression challenges might be tough, but it’s also the most rewarding part of what I do.

💪 So instead of stepping back, I decided to step up.
I committed to becoming the best trainer I can possibly be—both for my own safety and to ensure I’m offering my clients the most effective behaviour change plans possible. That’s why I enrolled in this incredible course. Though I had two years to complete it, I dove in and finished it in just two months! Early mornings, late nights, multitasking during dinner, and listening to lectures while driving—these past few months have been an all-out immersion into aggression training. 🚗📚

✨ What did I gain?
Much of what I was already doing was validated (a big confidence boost!), but I also learned so much more: from safely breaking up dog fights to truly respecting each dog’s individual pace.

🐾 If you’re ready to tackle your dog’s fear or aggression in 2025, I’m here to help.
I know how overwhelming it can feel, but you don’t have to go through it alone. Together, we can create a tailored plan to help your dog feel safer, calmer, and more confident.

Let’s make 2025 a year of positive change—for you and your dog. 💙 Reach out today, and let’s get started!

Please donate and share to keep this important charity going!!

To Our Loyal Supporters,

It’s Jennifer here, founder of Safe Pets Safe Families. We’ve just come out of our board meeting and decided that we have no choice but to put it all on the line tonight. Our organisation desperately needs funds to stay afloat. It’s the honest truth. I need to say it how it is. We are currently turning people away and upsettingly, we can’t continue our services into the New Year if we don't raise vital funds tonight.

I’m hoping at least 12 of you will kickstart our urgent fundraiser to save our organisation and get us back to doing what we do best, by clicking here now: https://safe-pets-safe-families.mygiveeasy.com/our-wish/donate

I started this organisation to prevent others experiencing what I did – the loss of my dogs, my fur children, when I fled domestic violence. I soon realised that pets mean the world to everyone, and that all vulnerable people and pets need and deserve support.

Having watched the charity grow over the years, I am as sure as ever that our community needs our support. In a big way, the health and wellbeing of people and pets depends on us.

We’ve done some great things. Take for example Jimmy and Seb.

Jimmy and Seb are homeless and living rough. When Seb the dog became unwell, Jimmy was exceptionally stressed with the financial burden of needing to take Seb to the vet multiple times. That stress magnified when he was told that Seb needed surgery to remove a tumor from his paw.

Jimmy was researching loans to pay for the surgery when he stumbled across Safe Pets Safe Families and learned we could help people in his position. He emailed us immediately and within a few hours had received a call from our case worker, who got Seb into one of our partner vets the same day. Surgery was scheduled and once complete, a no interest payment plan was put in place.

“I was so thankful, not having to have the money up front. Not only did Safe Pets save Seb’s life but mine as well. I was in such a low place that losing my mate would have killed me. We’ve always kept each other strong through our rough life. Words can’t describe how grateful I am, and I know if Seb could speak, he’d say thank you too!!!”.

Sadly, we are currently declining clients as we don’t have the funds to keep up with demand. It pains me so much. It’s not what I want to do and unless we can raise these funds, we face the prospect of closing our doors for good. We need to do something and fast, as there are so many people and their pets that desperately need help.

I’m putting it all on the line tonight.

We need to raise at least $50,000 to allow us to continue to help people and their pets and continue doing what we do best.

Just $5 from each and every one of you would get us to our goal. It’s the cost of your next cup of coffee but one that will help us more than you ever know.

If you can please write the word DONE after you have donated below and please please share this post far and wide. We need all the help we can get tonight.

This is our SOS. Our urgent time of need. I can’t put it any other way.

Please donate now: https://safe-pets-safe-families.mygiveeasy.com/our-wish/donate
