For nearly eight years, I had the privilege of working with Walkin' Pets, where I witnessed the transformative impact that a wheelchair can have on a dog's life. Watching dogs regain their mobility—and their spirit—was powerful, but hearing owners say, "I wish I'd known about dog wheelchairs soo...

🌟 Just before heading to Sydney last week for The Vet Expo, I had the joy of sending off a Walkin' Pets wheelchair for Luna the Dachshund.

Yesterday, I received the most heart-warming update – a video of Luna zooming around in her new wheels, with the message:

"Thank you... we have a new girl 💜"

She’s a speedy wonder now, living life to the fullest! Moments like these are what it’s all about 💕🐾

I. LOVE. THIS. PHOTO!

thank you to Charlie's owner who sent me this photo today. I will admit to having a bit of a hard time at the moment, and this photo just brought light to my heart.

Look at the smile - look at that style - true joy cannot be hidden

In another ironic piece of my life as a person who works with animals whom have mobility challenges.........I must apologies to any one trying to contact me as I self impose time limits working on the computer.

I have managed to break my dominant wrist - playing with the dogs 😬 - and negotiating a keyboard, let alone a mouse, is proving difficult at present.

I am hoping I will be able to get a bit faster in a couple of weeks. In the mean time, I am attempting to teach my MOTH (Man Of The House) how to process orders!

I thank you all for your patience

Say hello to Snags - such a beautiful boy!

He has Hydrotherapy Sessions at Noahs Crossing- Vet to help with his arthritis, but he also struggles with ear infections and we needed to stop his ears from getting water in them.
We ordered in a DogLeggs Swim Snood for him and he is so much more comfortable with his swim sessions now🐾😍

Came across this post from Divine Dog Project which really resonated with me. I am often asked for "simple solutions" to pets slipping on hard floors in homes. People wanting boots, tractions socks or something to put on their pets paws to help with traction
Honestly the best and simplest solution to help with your pets confidence in the home is non-slip, rubber back carpets and or runners in the main traffic areas) - forget about the homes aesthetic - think about the comfort and safety of your pet.

Looking For the Root Cause of Senior Dog Behavior Problems
By Margit Maxwell

When my senior girl, Kaya, turned 13 years old, she was still functioning pretty well for her adavanced age but I did notice some small puzzling behaviour issues that cropped up.

Sudden Fear or Reluctance of Doing Ordinary Tasks

Suddenly, Kaya would stand half in and half out of her crate and bark her "I want" bark. I would go to her and she would look at me expectantly while I stood there stoopidly trying to figure out what she wanted.

Then her reluctance to move out of her crate and her "help"barking branched out to include not wamting to walk down the path between the fridge and the island, and stsnding frozen as if she was "stuck" between the island and dishwasher.

What was going on for her?

When faced with a puzzling behaviour that does not seem to fit the situation at hand, always look to see what is else is going on in their environment.

So I did that. Here is what I noticed:

1. The floor in the kitchen is linoleum.

2. Her wire crate has been set up to use the side door panel.

3. The alley ways in the kitchen that go around island are narrow and have 90 degree corners.

4. After observing Kaya carefully I noticed at times her back legs would slip out from underneath her.

AH-HA!!!

With lightening fast (sarcasm intended) deduction, I quickly connected the dots to understand why Kaya was suddenly behaving so strangely ... her hind end has become unstable at times and she is afraid of slipping and falling when stepping out onto the linoleum or when make a sharp turn on the linoleum floor.

I also deduced that she likely has slipped in the past and now she worries/fears/expects to fall again.

So, the answer to helping Kaya was not about correcting her new behaviour. The answer was to address the problem in her environment that was CAUSING the new behaviour. If I address the root cause/causes, the behaviour should subside.

And subside it did ... almost immediately.

Some rubber backed carpeting was purchased and some short and long runners were placed in strategic places like pivot points in the kitchen.

I also changed the configuration of her wire crate to use the door at the end of her crate, not the middle of her crate so she does not have to negotiate a hard 90 degree angle turn leaving her crate.

I also placed one of the rubber backed runners right infront of the exit point so she steps out onto a non slippery surface.

And even though Kaya has been given a supplement containing a blend of MSM, glucosamine and chondroiten, she now needed some extra support. I can highly recommend the Adored Beast Apothacary - Jump for JOYnts Combination Homeopathic Support - Extra Strength for weakness and pain in joints.

I saw an immediate difference in the way Kaya carried herself across the floor. After coaxing her down the newly carpeted floor she quickly understood that she now had traction and stability on the linoleum.

Problem solved. Sherlock Holmes would have been impressed ... okay, maybe not.

the next step

In 2006 my beautiful first Rottweiler, Cole, inspired Pets Need A Life Too, our sister site devoted to behaviour enrichment

He was also the inspiration behind my interest in mobility aids when he succumbed to Degenerative myelopathy in 2012 and needed a wheelchair to help him go on his walks.

After extensive research I found HandicappedPets in the USA and their Walkin Wheels Wheelchairs. They were simply perfect for our needs. I became a dealer for their products and have gradually increased the range available as they increased their range. The enjoyment I recieved from helping pets beceom mobile again knows no bounds

The opportunity presented for me to develop the mobility side further when, after 25 years with the one employer as a Veterinary Nurse, I became redundant following his retirement.
