Earlier this year I started the process of professional accreditation. I had to provide a vet recommendation, 300 hours of consulting, and sit a 200 question closed book exam.

I sat the exam last month and found out today that I passed!

This repesents another milestone in my journey to provide the best, most professional services.

My certification is Certified Behaviour Consultant Canine - Knowledge Assessed (CBCC-KA).

I am the only one in South Australia!

Update on Chuck. The first bowel obstruction operation failed, the incision came open and he got sepsis. He was very, very sick. The survival rate for the resection was 50/50. The resection was a week ago today. He has recovered really well - eating, pooping and putting on weight. One tough dog, who has now had $30k of surgery!

This is Bertie a 5yo Beagle. A few months ago he was reactive to people he didn't know, especially men. The first session he was terrified, and would not even take treats I threw to him. It took three sessions before he let me pat him. Today was the first time he met Jed and I think he has a new bestie! โ™ฅ๏ธ๐Ÿพ

It was good news for Max. Fear aggression isn't always a death sentence for dogs. With the right owner, proper care and training the behaviour can be safely managed if not completely extinguished. Huge props to Holden Hill Vet Clinic and Homeward Bound Australia Rescue and Re-Home for giving Max a chance. We wish him all the best. โ™ฅ๏ธ๐Ÿพ

*** MAX UPDATE ***
Thank you to everyone who reached out to support Max ๐Ÿถ.
Max was assessed by Scott from Adelaide K9 Services (pictured) last week and we are happy to say he has now been fostered by a professional rehabilitation carer. Scott has also offered to support Maxโ€™s new owners in the future.

Homeward Bound Australia Rescue and Re-Home are now responsible for Max and will ensure he finds a wonderful home in the future after some training and health care.
We wish this little guy all the best and hope that he finds his perfect person.
Please head over to the Homeward Bound page for further updates. These people work tirelessly to support our furry friends by caring for them while they find their new homes. As you can appreciate this costs a lot of money. Should you wish to support them in helping Max and the many other animals in their care you can make a donation by getting in touch with Aranea on 0430715866. Aranea is also happy to answer any questions.

I am working with Holden Hill Vet Clinic to assess Max and determine if he is safe to re-home. I spent a couple of hours with Max today and the early prognosis is good. He has some medical issues to consider but he is in great hands at the clinic, where he is very much loved. I will provide an update as soon as one is available. โ™ฅ๏ธ๐Ÿพ

We are aware of a post being shared regarding a dog in our care. Information regarding this animal should not have been posted. We feel there should be a little more information given about Max and his situation and our responsibilities to both the owner and the public.
Max is an aggressive dog. He has hospitalised two people as a result of attacks. Max was presented at our clinic for euthanasia due to his behavioural problems. It was discussed that the owner surrender Max to see how he behaved in a different environment. Unfortunately Max has continued to show aggression including cage guarding and he has attempted to attack staff by lunging and attempting to bite.
As a result we are unable to rehome Max to any member of the public for several reasons.
Max is subject to a Dangerous Dog Order under the Dog and Cat Management Act 1995 SA.
Should Max be rehomed the new owner would be liable and should Max attack anyone is subject to fines of up to $50,000 and if negligence is proved likely criminal charges.
Should he be deemed a dangerous dog he would be required to live inside his owners home or in a fenced area. The area required usually consists of a full cage including roof that is concreted into the ground. He would have to wear a special collar showing he is a dangerous dog and be muzzled at all times when leaving the premises.
If Max was rehomed to someone who is not an expert and the worst happens then he would be given a destruction order, usually via court application by the relevant body.
We will not be able to rehome Max to a member of the public as stated.
We appreciate everyoneโ€™s concerns and offers and we are truly touched by how much people care.
We have been advised by the relevant organisations regarding Maxโ€™s future and we are required to either find a professional to retrain and attempt to find Max a home or euthanise him at the owners request.
Max has not been put to sleep. We are doing our best to find the best outcome for Max.
The person who posted the original post had good intentions however this should not have been made a public matter.
We would appreciate if calls to the clinic regarding Max could please stop as our nurses also have hospital patients to tend to. However if you are a certified dog trainer willing to take Max we would love to hear from you.
Max will not be kept at the clinic as we have to keep both him and our staff safe.
Should you have any concerns feel free to message our page and we will get to you when we can.
We are unable to discuss this matter any further publicly for the protection of Maxโ€™s previous owners, our staff and our clinic.
As stated we will do our best for Max to achieve the best outcome. Should he go to a certified trainer the trainerโ€™s information will not be disclosed due to privacy reasons.
We thank you for your understanding and above all your compassion for Max.

Please refer to the Dog and Cat Management Act 1995 (SA) should you have any concerns regarding our responsibilities.

** We will be posting an update regarding Max when we can. We have several conversations to be had and an assessment to be made. This may not be until tomorrow but we will do our best. We have the situation in hand and appreciate all the offers of help. 1824 7/6/24

This is the what the South Australian Government are saying. ๐Ÿคท

Given all of the tasks state governments have to get involved in, it is easy for them to make ๐˜€๐˜‚๐—ฐ๐—ต ๐—ฎ ๐—บ๐—ถ๐˜€๐˜๐—ฎ๐—ธ๐—ฒ in classification.

They probably have been ill advised by someone who knows less about IGP than a mushroom.

And this would be government's biggest mistake. ๐Ÿ‘ˆ

The South Australian Government recently released a draft bill which amongst other things, aims to classify IGP dogs as โ€œattack dogsโ€.

A classification normally reserved for Police or Military dogs.

IGP is a sport, a very detailed and precise sport based on control.

There are several levels of this sport starting with the Zap test which is an assessment process for to young dogs.

Next would be the BH test where a dog is tested in an obedience pattern and what is informally called the traffic test in which the dogs are tested in public situations such as being tied up in a public space, testing them under stimulations such bike rider passing, cars and or dogs to determine if the dogs presented are good examples of the breed.

IGP is a modern version of Schutzhund, used by Max Von Stephanitz (the creator of the German Shepherd Dog) to test and rank dogs within the breed.

This is a testing system to select only the best dogs and breed them.

There is an obedience component that has agility and retrieving exercises, a tracking phase and a character assessment in which the dog, under high levels of control bites a dedicated sport sleeve under very strict conditions.

In the past and sometimes present, the C phase has been called the โ€œprotectionโ€ phase.

As a person who has trained many dogs for personal protection, Police Service, Correctional Services and Military forces, I can tell you that IGP dogs are no where near the same as dogs that are trained to combat a human being.

IGP dogs are targeting equipment.

I have tested a number of IGP 3 dogs for transition to police or military service, that would only be suitable with a considerable amount of retraining.

Without equipment, they will NOT engage.

Now also know that dogs that complete the Zap test, which is a temperament evaluation and dogs that do BH, Obedience or tracking are still going to be classed as attack dogs.

Even though they have in no way been involved in the C Phase. I.e. never bitten a sleeve

Why would a state government make such an insane legislation?

Well, the answer as always is, bad information.

As the President of the Professional Dog Trainers of Australia, I can tell you that the South Australian government has not consulted ANY IGP clubs, trainers or organisations.

This is being brought about by all states because, nationally, dog bites and attacks are growing out of control

Now before you ask, no, IGP dogs are not increasing these numbers.

The increased attacks and bites are due to pet dogs that are not under control.
This happens due to a lack of effective training due to people gravitating towards methods that are claimed to be Force Free.

Dogs need structure, management and training that is suitable for their individual temperament.

Not a program that fits within someoneโ€™s ideals and dreams.

Dogs are individuals, attack dogs are dogs that are needed to control and stop dangerous people.

IGP dogs are sport dogs. Engaging in this sport will not increase the risks a dog presents.

In fact, if you can get a dog through to IGP 3, you have considerable control over your dog.

What will classifying IGP dogs as attack dogs mean.

Fact is, itโ€™s hard to know.

Most IGP clubs train in council sports fields, canโ€™t see that permission being continued when you are training attack dogs.

Attack dogs can only be boarded in specific kennels. The kennels we have at K9Pro are extremely high security and our staff are highly experienced.

Therefore normal boarding kennels are out.

How about insurance? Both medical and third party? Think you will be able to get insurance for your attack dog?

Are attack dogs allowed to use dog parks?

How about housing, attack dogs need specific kennel runs.

So, if you even do one training session in IGP, you will need a dog run.

Do you rent? Will the landlord allow you to build a dog run with a concrete slab?

If this draft bill passes, this will be the end of IGP in South Australia.

But still ok in other states.

For nowโ€ฆ

When the intended purpose is to reduce dog attacks and IGP dogs have no recorded attacks in South Australia, how will that protect the public?

It wonโ€™t.

This is a Senseless bill based on ridiculous information.

Please help by doing these things
1. Sign this petition (https://www.change.org/p/igp-dog-sport-is-not-attack-dog-training)

2. Join the PDTA, we need your support to help us inform governments that Australian people do not want these bans. Membership is super easy, if youโ€™re not a dog trainer, you can join as an associate member for just $20!
