"Old Family Reds" - This genetic, blood or strain of APBT, originated around the 1850's in the counties of Kerry and Cork in Ireland. Old Family Reds were known as being predominantly small game "Red/White" dogs with both Black Nose and Red Nose. These Old Family Reds were bred to other fighting dog strains to create the APBT...as a result there are no pure Irish Old Family Reds anymore.

Before the creation of the APBT registries in America many fighting dogs were imported to America from Ireland, England and Scotland, and bred to American fighting dogs to create the APBT. Many Irish-American breeders of APBT in America valued the Old Family Red dogs imported from Ireland for their deep gameness, and acquired them from Irish immigrants. Early Irish-American breeders included, but were not limited to, Corcoran, Shipley, Feeley, Lightner and Colby.

Some of the main stud dogs for these Irish-American breeders were Colby's Galtie, Bruce's Jerry and Shipley's Red Jerry that traced back to the Old Family Reds from Ireland. These breeders linebred these dogs to create their own family of APBT.

Later APBT breeders, such as Bob Hemphill, Dan McCoy, Bob Wallace, Joe Corvino, Bert Clouse to name a only a few blended these early Irish-American breeders dogs to create their own strains of APBT. Bob Hemphill is credited for creating his Old Family Red Nose strain linebred off Lightner's dogs and using some of the Corcoran, Shipley and Feeley dogs as outcrosses.

True Old Family Reds should genetically trace back to the extinct Irish Old Family Reds and should carry at least 51% of their gene pool (pedigree) to be considered part of the Irish strain. They should be Red or Red/White dogs and can come in both Black Nose and Red Nose....Most importantly, true Old Family Reds should be deep game!

Despite their popularity, the Red Pitbull or Red Nose Pit is rarely seen. It is not a separate breed of Pitbull; rather it is just a specific color variation. Red Nose Pitbulls are striking dogs with their distinctive rich chestnut-red coat. Mighty and proud, they make great family companions and are superb with children when bred and raised correctly. As its name suggests, the nose is the characteristic red color, as are the lips and eyes. The coat is also a vibrant chestnut red that may or may not have patches of white on it. Without a doubt, the American Red Nose Pit is a stunning dog. During the 1800’s, the English mixed Bulldogs and various breeds of terrier together to develop the Pitbull. The aim was to create a fighting dog capable of taking on bulls and bears. Later, unscrupulous owners started pitting Pitbulls against each other too. What they created was a medium-sized, dominant dog with a feisty attitude and a zest for life. In the mid-1800’s, the Irish started to become fond of the red colored Pitbulls that would crop up from time to time in litters of puppies. By inbreeding related animals of the same color from the “old family” strain of Pitbulls, they were able to perpetuate the genes, and Red Nose Pitbulls became more common. When emigrating Englishmen decided to cross the seas and move to America, they took the Red Nose Pitbull (and other colors) with them. Now, instead of being primarily fighting dogs, their role changed to protectors of homesteads and family companions due to their fiercely loyal nature. Despite its popularity, the main governing body of the dog show world, the American Kennel Club, still refuses to recognize the Pitbull of any color. They argue that it is not distinct enough from other breeds such as the American Staffie or Staffordshire Bull Terrier.
