Disinfected and cleaned the incubator last night ready for my first hatch of the season, starting tonight! I’m a bit late to the party but here we go! So far I’ve got 2 Silkie, 4 Vorwerk, 4 Old English Game Bantam and 4 Easter Eggers (two brown, two green/blue). Hoping to add 2-4 more from today’s eggs. I’ll have day olds available in 3 weeks! I’m very excited to get back into it full time. Let’s goooooo! 🥚 🐣 🐓 ❤️

Weighing your birds regularly can be a useful tool to help catch potential issues. Write it down and keep track over time. A gram scale works well for breeds under 3 kg.
Any fluctuations to the norm may be indicative of a problem. Monitoring for weight gain is just as important as weight loss, especially for hens.
Common reasons for weight gain:
*Ascites (the accumulation of excess fluid within the peritoneal cavity resulting in abdominal swelling).
*Diet
*Accumulation of eggs and egg material in the body (internal laying): Keep in mind that the average size egg laid by a chicken is 50g (0.05 kg). 10% of that weight is the shell. Therefore, even shell-less eggs weigh 45 g (0.045 kg). 4 weeks of internal egg laying = 1080 g (1.08 kg) of additional egg weight.
*Tumors
***Monitoring weight may be particularly useful for hens with a history of reproductive issues or individuals who are at high risk.

I collected an egg I found just before sunset, and it went on an adventure for about 1.5 hours in my jacket pocket. I realised it was still in my pocket and my face went…😳 I can’t believe I didn’t break it! I’ve broken plenty of eggs before in my pockets 🤣 I know I’m not the only one, surely? 🥲 is it also weird that I know which one of my chicken’s laid this egg? 🤔

3 black/silver Silkie hens for GIVEAWAY to the right home. The owner is absolutely shattered and this is a regretful giveaway.

They’re approximately 7 years old and are NO LONGER LAYING. So we’re really looking for someone who is willing to take them on as pets/family members rather than “egg machines”, as their laying days are over.

All 3 are to go TOGETHER. Will NOT separate.
