Today we celebrate the life and legacy of iconic Meerkat, Snow White.

Snowy was humanely euthanised today, due to a number of age-related health conditions that had seen her quality of life significantly reduced. An Aged Animal Assessment was conducted with Meerkat keepers and zoo veterinarians, and it was determined that it was time to offer Snowy this final act of kindness, to prevent her suffering.

We celebrated Snowy’s 14th birthday just last month, well beyond the average life expectancy of a Meerkat in human care, which is around 10 years. While we are deeply saddened by Snowy’s passing, we want to celebrate her legacy.

Born looking just like her relatives throughout her youth, Snow White lost her pigmentation later in life to become the Snowy we all know and love.

Beloved by Adelaide Zoo staff, volunteers, members and zoo-goers, and most of all by her keepers, Snowy has been an icon of our zoo and captured hearts and imaginations throughout her life. She reminded us all of the beauty in being different, and celebrating that which makes us unique.

We ask that you show only kindness and respect for the loss of Snow White. If you wish to leave a message of support for her keepers or a kind farewell for Snowy, we encourage you to do so.

URGENT PRODUCT WARNING – LIGHT UP FAIRY FLOSS BUCKETS

It has been brought to our attention that an unapproved item was sold by a third-party vendor at Boo at the Zoo this year, and that this item could present a hazard to children.

The light up fairy floss buckets contain small button batteries in a casing that can be removed from the larger plastic item. According to supplier records, 60 of these buckets were sold at this year’s Boo at the Zoo event.

Zoos SA has vendor protocols in place to ensure that all items sold at our events go through an approval process and that vendors consent to refrain from bringing prohibited items onto the premises. We regret that in this instance, the vendor did not adhere to these requirements, and took it upon themselves to make a last-minute addition to their range without the zoo’s knowledge or approval.

We have strongly encouraged the supplier to refer the matter to the ACCC for review, and conduct a safety recall of this product if it is found to be non-compliant. Zoos SA is further taking action to reinforce event protocols with all external vendors and will be reviewing our procedures to ensure this does not happen at future events.

If you purchased one of these light up buckets, please take the necessary precautions to ensure the safety of any user. You can return the product to the supplier for a full refund. Alternatively, we strongly recommend removing the light up pack from the bottom of the bucket and disposing of it responsibly.

Product description: Light up plastic buckets with Halloween face stickers, filled with fairy floss. Sold at the ‘Treat Me’ marquee in Nature’s Playground for $15 each.

Just ONE WEEK to go before Boo at the Zoo and we're howling with excitement - the event is now sold out!! 👻🎃😈

While we wait for the spooktacular night, let's take a look at another scary species fact!

Have you spied Adelaide Zoo's Maned Wolf, Ninka? Her species is mostly active at night and can rotate their large ears to listen for prey animals in the grass.

They do not howl, but instead emit loud barks or roar barks to let their mate know where they are, and to warn other wolves to stay away! 🐾

A GIANT thank you to everyone who has dropped a letter into our Panda Postbox! 🐼🐼💌

We have been overwhelmed with the pawfect letters, messages and drawings for Wang Wang and Fu Ni - in fact we've received over 1000 hand-written notes so far!

Excitingly, there is still time to see the much-loved bears before they return home to China.

We've received official advice granting zoo-goers access to Bamboo Forest and Wang Wang and Fu Ni access to both their day rooms and outdoor habitat during their quarantine period, which has now begun.

This means that there is still time to come in to the zoo, say farewell and post a letter in the Panda Postbox before mid-November - so we'd love you to come on in to wave a paw goodbye. 🐾

Today is a sad day. It is with an extremely heavy heart that Adelaide Zoo announces the passing of African Lion pair female Amani (23) and male Mujambi (19). Both big cats are now at rest.

Over the weekend Mujambi’s suffered a medical episode, and despite the best care by our veterinary team, the difficult decision was made for him to be humanely euthanised. Amani was then put to sleep shortly after as the negative welfare and aspects of her life without Mujambi were determined to outweigh any positives of remaining alone.

“Choosing when it is the right to say goodbye to an animal is a hardship but also a blessing. As well as the complex ethics surrounding euthanasia, and Zoos SA’s commitment to ensuring the best welfare outcome for animals in our care, we also have to consider species-specific behaviour. In the case of lions, they are a social species, and the likelihood of safely moving or integrating Amani into another pride or environment was considered too risky and stress provoking,” said Dr Phil Ainsley, Director of Adelaide Zoo.

Amani was the oldest lioness in Australia, recently turning 23. Amani’s keepers held a birthday party to mark her big day with members and volunteers turning up to watch her demolish enrichment items created by Adelaide Zoo’s BEEZA team.

Our male lion, Mujambi, turned 19 in March and was a handsome lion with a beautiful mane, albeit thinning in his old age.

“Amani, despite appearances, was very closely bonded to Mujambi. Yes, she swiped at him, growled and bossed him around, but she also wanted to be no further away from him than his shadow,” said Deb Barry, Curator of Adelaide Zoo.

“Our keepers are extremely sad. They’ve spent years caring for Amani and Mujambi. Their care has meant both lions lived to significant ages, well beyond the usual life expectancy. In the wild, African Lions live to around 15 years of age. Under human care in a zoo or safari park setting, lions can live into their 20’s. At 23 and 19 both lions were in the latter stages of their lives.

“Working with Amani and Mujambi has been an honour. Amani was a fierce lioness. Even in her later years, she would snarl, pounce and rip at her meat. While she was the dominant of the two, she sought out Mujambi as if it was her role to keep a watchful eye on him. She’d regularly tell him off but in her next breath cosy up alongside him.

“Despite being a strapping lion with a full black mane, in his youth, Mujambi would tread carefully around Amani. He was an extremely handsome lion, in fact, he was the poster lion for Adelaide Zoo and sister site Monarto Safari Park.

“Mujambi, or Muj as he was known by his keepers, could regularly be heard chuffing at helicopters and planes overhead and liked to start the morning with a chorus. His chuffs would often wake up the zoo. We will really miss that sound,” finished Deb.

As you can imagine, the entire team at Adelaide Zoo is saddened by today’s news. We know you will be too. We therefore encourage you to share your love of Amani and Mujambi in a fitting way with kind words, photos and videos in the comments or any special memories or thoughts via the link below.

Please note, that in a few days we will start thinking about the best way to celebrate and mark Amani and Mujambi’s lives. If you wish to make a suggestion, please do so.

Our thoughts go to the keeping team, vets and all who have been touched by Amani and Mujambi’s lives and are saddened at their passing. Please take care and show only kindness and respect for the loss of these beautiful big cats.

We don't mean to scare you but tickets to Boo at the Zoo are frighteningly close to selling out! 👻🎃

To get in the spooky mood, here is another scary species fact. 😈

Our very own devil, the Tasmanian Devil has one of the strongest bites in relation to body size of any animal!

The ‘devil’ part of its name refers both to the bloodcurdling screams emitted by this nocturnal animal as it feeds.

Don't miss your chance to get your ghoul on at this year's spooktacular event. Grab your tickets from the link below.🐾

We have some big news – Zoos SA Chief Executive, Elaine Bensted, has announced her intention to retire from her position next year.

After 12 years at the helm of the organisation, Elaine will finish in her role late in April 2025 and head into a well-deserved retirement.

During Elaine’s tenure, there have been many special milestones for our organisation, from construction of the Nature’s Playground at Adelaide Zoo to the opening of the new Visitor Centre at Monarto Safari Park.

And while Elaine says now is the right time to hand the reins over, she still has unfinished business before she leaves.

Listen in as she shares her thoughts and thanks to you, our Zoos SA family.

While we wait for the ghouls and gremlins to arrive, come take a look as some scary species facts... 😈

Did you know Komodo Dragon's hunt and kill their prey (including creatures as large as water buffalo) using their venom that causes a drop in blood pressure and rapid bleeding.

Their jaw and throat are built to allow them to swallow huge chunks of meat with great speed and, with an expandable stomach, these carnivorous lizards can consume up to 80 per cent of their body weight in a single meal! 🦎
