Don't judge a dog by their muzzle!
Muzzles show responsible ownership and ensures the dog gets the exercise and enrichment they need.

It's best to give any muzzled dog space, just in case. They, and their owner, will thank you for it!

Under the Dog and Cat Management Act 1995, wearing a muzzle, accompanied by a bright red and yellow collar, is mandatory in certain situations. However, muzzles can be necessary for lots of different reasons.

When using a muzzle for safety around others, it's important to ensure the dog isn't placed in overwhelming situations just because they're wearing one.

Did your expectations match your reality when you got your new dog?
It's easy to focus on our dogs' 'bad' behaviors while overlooking the good ones. Which can make thinking about improving our dogs' behaviour overwhelming. Remember, we're asking them to learn challenging behaviors (like not barking or pulling) in a language they don't understand.

We have been made aware that the pet microchip registry HomesafeID will no longer be available to store and search your pets microchip details.

In South Australia, it's compulsory for all dogs and cats to be registered on Dogs and Cats online (DACO), the statewide database for all dogs, cats and breeder registration.

If you have any registration information stored with HomesafeID or another registry, we encourage you to transfer this information to DACO as soon as possible.

Can you handle the H.E.A.T.?
Here's a reminder of the hot weather policy your pet wishes you knew about!

The floor is๐Ÿ”ฅon sunny days!
Keep your dog cool by:

๐ŸŒž Keeping them indoors or ensuring they have access to shade the entire day
๐Ÿ’ง Ensuring they have multiple water sources in case one is tipped over (or if they like to dig in them - lots of dogs cool down by standing in water)
๐Ÿ• Only exercising first thing in the morning or last thing at night (enrich their day in other ways to keep them out of mischief!)
๐ŸงŠ Hiding some favourite treats (or their breakfast/dinner) in ice

Heat stroke is a serious risk for pets. Remember to plan ways to keep them cool this Summer! Dogs regulate heat by panting, and short-nosed breeds are particularly at risk. Excessive exercise, like running in water, can raise their body temperature and hinder their ability to cool down. It's critical to keep exercise low key and avoid over-exertion on hot days.

"It's okay! They're friendly!"

Have you seen our new signs along the foreshore?

Our leash laws are about ensuring everyone can enjoy public spaces without unexpected dog interactions, even from friendly dogs.

Please respect others in our community spaces and call your dog away from dogs, people and their things. Keep them on a lead until they're trained, if you can't call them away.

Check the comments for more on why dogs should be on a lead! ๐Ÿ‘‡

The park on the north side of the Woodville Oval Complex is currently closed for a major irrigation upgrade until Friday, 7 February.

This important upgrade will enhance turf maintenance and provide a better experience at the reserve for the community (including our furry friends! ๐Ÿถ) in the future.

We appreciate your understanding and patience during this time.

Does your dog go into a fireworks frenzy?
Is this your dog or cat's first New Year's Eve?

While fireworks can be fun for many people, it can be a very traumatic experience for lots of our pets (especially if they haven't experienced them to the extent they occur on NYE before!)

Please take a moment to plan how to help your pet cope with the fireworks this NYE.

It's not too late to chat with your vet about medications that might help reduce some of your pet's stress or panic.

We're so pleased to hear that our Scentsory Garden, Woodville West passed little Winnie's sniff test!

Isn't she adorable?! ๐Ÿ˜

Our Scentsory Garden is the place for SCENT-sational sniffers and is not a place for play. It's a small space that is purpose-built to encourage relaxing exploration and sniffing and is especially beneficial for vaccinated puppies, older dogs, shy dogs or those dogs who don't want to be swamped by others at a traditional dog park.

** Storm Warning! **

BOM is warning of a chance of a thunderstorm tomorrow afternoon, Saturday 23rd November.

If your dog struggles with loud noises like thunder, here are some tips and tricks that might help them feel better:
โšก๏ธ Keep your dog company or ask friends or family they trust to look after them
โšก๏ธ Shut blinds or windows to reduce noise and the sight of lightening
โšก๏ธ Let them hide wherever they feel safest (as long as it's actually safe for them)
โšก๏ธ Turn the TV up, or play some music to help muffle some sound
โšก๏ธ Play games or use long lasting, high value treats like Kongs, chews or bones as a distraction
โšก๏ธ Speak to your vet about short term medication as an option

Most importantly: comfort them. โ€˜Reinforcing fearโ€™ is a myth โ€“ you canโ€™t make an emotion worse by being compassionate.

Remember to call us on 8408 1111 if you do come across a scared pup who has wandered away from home or your dog has escaped.
