On behalf of everyone at Northfield Veterinary Clinic, we would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Wildlife Welfare Org SA Inc for their invaluable support and expertise in helping Dr. Bel care for a very special Sacred Kingfisher.

This bird, found by a lovely member of the community at the Gepps Cross Homemaker Centre, was diagnosed by Dr. Bel with a fractured ulna. Thanks to the guidance and collaboration with WWO, a treatment plan was created. After receiving initial care with us here at Northfield Vet, the kingfisher continued its rehabilitation journey at WWO’s Wildlife Rescue Centre.

The successful release of this magnificent bird back into a wetland near its original location is a testament to the incredible teamwork and shared commitment to wildlife care. Working together, we are always learning and growing, and we are so grateful for the connections we share with WWO.

Thank you for everything you do for our wildlife and for supporting us in giving this kingfisher a second chance at life!

An extra special thank you to the kind member of our community who found the kingfisher and brought him in to us! 🩵

This very special photo means a lot to Dr. Bel.
Sitting alongside Dr Frank Hollis, the original owner of Northfield Vet Clinic at our recent open day. Frank laid the foundation for our clinic’s long-standing beautiful reputation way back in 1971!

🎆 Fireworks & festive season safety for your pets 🎆

The festive season is in full swing! Many celebrations at this time of year include fireworks, which can be stressful and potentially dangerous for pets, particularly those with anxiety. Loud noises can be overwhelming, causing pets to run away or injure themselves in their attempt to escape.

Here are a few handy tips to keep your pets safe:

🐾 Provide a quiet, comfortable area where your pet can retreat. Close windows and curtains to help muffle sounds.

🐾 If possible, stay home with your pet or arrange for someone to be with them. Your calm presence can help them feel more secure.
🐾 Tiring your pet out with exercise earlier in the day can help them be more relaxed during the evening.

🐾 Ensure their Microchip and tag on their collar is up to date. If your pet does become frightened and escapes, having up to date contact info can help bring them home safely.

🐾 Book a consult with us if you’d like advice on calming aids or treatments for your pet’s anxiety and stressful events.

If you’re concerned about your pet’s anxiety or would like recommendations for keeping them calm, please call us on 8262 6325, or make a booking through our website. Let’s make this holiday season safe and enjoyable for everyone, including our four-legged friends! 🐶💙

🎄 Festive season pet safety reminder! 🍫🥛

With the festive season upon us, we know it’s tempting to share treats with our pets! However, some holiday favourites like eggnog, mince pies, chocolates, Christmas ham, and other goodies can be harmful to pets and may lead to upset tummies or even hospitalisation for extra care.

These treats are also high in calories and are not needed in your pet’s diet. If you’d like to spoil them, please stick to pet-friendly treats instead. Carrots are a fun alternative! 🥕

Let’s keep our pets safe, happy and healthy this holiday season! 🐾

🐱✨ Cat grooming at Northfield Veterinary Clinic!

With summer officially here, it’s the perfect time to keep your cat feeling fresh and comfortable! Medium to long- haired cats are especially prone to matting for various reasons, whether it’s due to shedding, their coat’s natural texture, or difficulty grooming themselves. This matted fur can feel like a tight “straight jacket” and may even contribute to health issues over time.

At Northfield Veterinary Clinic, we offer hygiene grooms under sedation to help safely and comfortably remove matts. For most cats, sedation is essential as cats don’t tolerate the clipper noise or the time it takes to groom. Recently, we had a very rare exception— sweet Simba, who actually enjoyed the session without sedation! But in most cases, sedation ensures a calm, safe experience, allowing us to handle tough matts and keeps the cat’s grooming journey stress-free.

SUMMER WALK HAZARDS! 🐾🌞

With summer approaching, it’s the perfect time for outdoor adventures with your dogs. But before you head out, here are a few potential hazards to keep in mind:

🐝 Bees & Insects - Curious pups might get too close and end up with a sting! Keep an eye out for buzzing bees, wasps, and other insects that can cause discomfort or even allergic reactions. We have already seen a few bee- sting patients in clinic this season!

🔥 Hot Pavements - If it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for their paws! Walk during cooler parts of the day or stick to short grassy areas to avoid painful burns.

🌾 Long Grass - While it might look like fun to run through, long grass can hide hidden dangers like grass seeds, burrs sharp sticks and snakes. Always check your dog’s coat and paws after your walk.

🐍 Snakes - Snakes love to sunbathe, and they might be lurking in the grass or under rocks. Be cautious when walking near bushy or grassy areas.

🌱 Grass Seeds - These little seeds can easily get lodged in your dog’s paws, ears, nose, or coat. Regularly check and groom your pup after walks to avoid painful irritation or infections.

🚗 Hot Cars - Never leave your dog in a hot car, even for a few minutes. Temperatures can soar quickly, leading to dangerous situations for your pet.

💧 Hydration - Make sure your pup stays hydrated during your summer adventures. Carry water with you, and take regular breaks in the shade.

We love seeing happy, healthy dogs enjoying the sunshine! Just keep these tips in mind, and you and your pet can have a safe, fun summer ahead. 🐕💙

🐶💙 Meet Archie, who had an absolute blast during his recent visit! Instead of feeling anxious, he was all smiles and tail wags as he sniffed out all the treats our nurse Jen cleverly hid in a snuffle mat. 🐾

Using a snuffle mat is a great way to provide enrichment for patients during their visit and to us.
It keeps them happily occupied, helps reduce stress, and turns a potentially nerve-wracking experience into a fun, positive one!

We love finding ways to make your pets feel comfortable and at ease while they’re here. Have a nervous pup or curious kitty? Ask us about our enrichment activities at your next appointment! 🐾💙
