A professional in any industry should never stop learning! I have spent this last week at The Ranch Training Centre in Seattle USA honing my training skills under the expert eye of Ken Ramirez. If there's something about animal training that Ken doesn't know, it hasn't been invented yet. Working with trainers from across the globe is a great way to learn different techniques and approaches to the behavioural issues we deal with every day. Ongoing education is the only way to remain at the forefront of the industry. Being surrounded by like-minded trainers that put animal welfare first is so motivational. The animals we work with deserve our very best and I commit to always stretching my skills and knowledge to meet their needs, and the needs of their guardians. Now for the long trek home!

After another day of assessing therapy dogs for Delta, I got to hang out with some of our existing volunteers. Apparently they all think they’re lap dogs - except the smallest, who requires her own chair! A big thanks to all those who volunteer their time ###

I'm heading overseas for a short holiday and to further develop my own training skills under the expert tutelage of world-renowned animal trainer Ken Ramirez. Unfortunately that means I won't be able to see any clients until the beginning of September. A new study that looks into canine cognitive decline finds that, just like humans, stimulation of dogs' brains through training and activity as they age can help keep the decline at bay.

It has been a lovely (but busy) few days in Perth assessing therapy dogs for Delta. Delta volunteers work so hard and the organisation simply wouldn’t be able to bring so much joy to so many people without them. Thank you to everyone who helped out this weekend. It was a pleasure to meet so many amazing canines.

Until you've had a reactive or fearful dog, you can't understand what these dogs (and their owners) go through after an encounter with an unleashed dog.

It not only increases anxiety in your dog, but it makes YOU anxious, as well. The result? The next time you're out for a walk, instead of enjoying the time with your dog, you are constantly on guard, your eyes scanning the area relentlessly for a dog to come running at you out of nowhere.

Like clockwork, you will yell to me that your unleashed and uncontrolled dog racing toward us is friendly, but that's not the point. My dog is fearful, and that fear is going to trigger a reaction. My dog is on a leash so that I can (1) ensure his safety and (2) control his environment - both of which are compromised when your unleashed dog approaches us.

After the encounter, my dog and I are left trying to decompress from the very stressful situation that just happened.

Our relaxing walk ruined.

Our bonding time rudely interrupted.

In most public spaces, the law requires dogs to be leashed. It's for their safety and the safety of others.

Our dogs depend on us to keep them safe.

Our community depends on us to be responsible owners and leash our dogs.

When in public and sharing common space with others, we should have (at the very least) a BASIC RESPECT for ALL those around us.

PLEASE LEASH YOUR DOG!!

Dogs not liking the postie is an age-old dilemma, but we know a lot more about how to make the dogs (and the posties) feel a lot better about each other!

Each week about 50 posties are victims of dog-related incidents, and dogs worked up about delivery workers can be a problem for families too.

Training a dog should not be the only response to their behaviour. Behaviour is communication and communication is giving us a message. The dog might be scared, worried, anxious, sad, depressed, hungry, overwhelmed and so on...

Only when we know the reason for the behaviour should a training program be considered and only then if training is the right option.

Training should always be respectful and compassionate, focusing on the dog's physical and emotional well-being, thus fostering a strong, trusting bond between dog and human.
