"PET DOG TRAINING"

Today I was watching some Dog Training videos on how to teach the heel command. While reading the comments I saw people critising the techniques and other people replying labelling it "Pet Dog Training".

As a Dog Trainer I teach both Sport Dog Owners who want to compete in and win obedience competitions but the majority of my clients are Pet Dog Owners who have no intention to ever compete in an obedience competion.

Even though the amount of Pet Dog Owners vastly out number the amount of Competition Clients, I do not do "Pet Dog Training". I teach people how to train their dog exactly how I would train the dog if it was mine. I teach clients to be the best dog trainer I can which includes teaching correct technique and the psychology of behaviour modification. I do not lower my standard or my expectations. The client can then choose their results.

I do tailor the training to meet the clients exact needs of either winning competitions or dealing with life events but I make sure a very solid foundation is set so any Pet Dog Owner has the ability to compete in any discipline, meet any goals they set or work through any issue without needing me to come back or spend more money.

I make my clients dog trainers, the best dog trainers I can.

The dogs I have rescued and rehabilitated, the dogs I have saved from needing to be rehomed during my many years in Gsd Rescue, the thousands of dog owners I have trained voluntarily as an Obedience Instructor and trained Professionally including my dogs I have taken from reactive dogs going to be pts to multi excellent scoring obedience dogs gives me the ability to continue to work with dogs.

The wagging tails of my client's dogs and the results my client's see keep me doing what I love.

First session working on reactivity. From constant defensive barking and lunging at dogs anywhere in sight to starting to realise its better to engage with dad.

When do you command a behaviour?

When you are happy with the behaviour.
"Label what you are happy with".

Make sure you understand 100% what the command means else your dog never will.

Firstly you need to be able to teach the dog what the required behaviour is. When you command the behaviour you need to make sure it is fair to the dog and that you can reward the behaviour to create it. Consistency is also important.

Luring is a great way to get the dog to preform the desired behaviour. When you can get the dog to preform the required behaviour consistently you can then begin to label it.

You need to remember that verbal is the lowest form of communication between you and your dog.

To teach a dog to sit I will first teach a lure. Once the dog lures consistently I will use the lure to teach the dog to sit via a touch command and then the touch command to teach a lead command. Once the dog can sit via lure, touch and lead command I will introduce the verbal command "sit".

I can now ask my dog to sit at anytime and if needed I have the touch and lead commands to make sure the verbal command is followed. Rembering body language and movement is far more powerful than verbal communication with dogs.

Give the verbal command once and once only so the dog isn't learning to tune you out and ignore you.

Remeber to teach your dog what you want, reward and create it and don't try to just correct or punish your dog into the right behaviour.

Most day schools enable dogs to roam free and interact with each other, leaving many dogs and their owners with fixable issues unable to attend ✖️⁣

Now don’t get me wrong, there are plenty of dogs that thrive off socialising with other dogs that have similar temperaments, but what if yours doesn’t?⁣

What if they have higher levels of distrust, anxiety, reactivity, energy, or you don’t feel comfortable with the risks involved when it comes to interactions?⁣

This is where we come in with a unique approach ⚠️⁣

Our K9 Academy looks to familiarise your dog with obedience skills we think every dog should know…

Skills that makes the lives of their owners easier.⁣

We not only magnify positive qualities through obedience, but also pin-point negative behaviours to fade them out through effective 1 on 1 coaching 🗣⁣

We proactively use our skills to benefit you at home, on your walks, out in public, and in situations that would otherwise make you tense and uncertain. ⁣

If you’d like to create an obedient dog while you run errands, work, study, or simply just need a day to kick your feet up and relax, we’ve got your back!⁣

I've gone barking mad and I need your help! This August, I am braving the cold and challenging myself to go walking 60 minutes a day to raise funds for Guide Dogs. That's 124km across the month! Rain, hail or shine, I'll be pounding the pavement for Guide Dog pups. It's going to be RUFF but it's for...
