EXCITING ANNOUNCEMENT πŸ“£

I’m so excited and proud to be relaunching my little business under a new name POOCH PALS DOG MINDING! πŸ‘

Formerly a dog groomer and dog minder, I am now focusing on both mine and the dog’s favourite part, DOG MINDING, with the option of a wash and fluff dry or deshed for those who need it during their stay.

Having moved from Melbourne to Adelaide mid 2022, I’m now finally set up to provide a wonderful, safe, secure home away from home for people who have to go away and don’t want to leave their pooches at kennels. Your pooch becomes a part of my family while you are away. Yes, this means they have full access to any comfortable place in the house like couches and beds.

My training philosophy is of the force free, fear free mindset whereby your pooch is only encouraged with positive reinforcement, and any undesirable behaviours are redirected knowing that dogs are always willing to please when secure attachments are established.

Please reach out to see if we are a good fit for you 0474 804 660 (text is best).

Kind regards,
Sonya, Hunter 🐩 & Phoebe πŸˆβ€β¬›

SUCH a pleasure to meet Pugsley last night, and so excited for his stay with us when his Mum has to go away.
Hunter has always been my right hand man when it comes to entertaining our clients. His love and respect of small dogs, being such a large breed himself, is an absolute pleasure to watch 🐢🩡🐩

Beautiful Dash came for his groom today 😍
He’s anxious with the dryer so his Mum and I have always worked around that by sc******ng first, brush and dry in the sun and home in his surf robe. Now he’s had a few visits and I had an extra pair of helping hands; l marked a spot on the floor with a towel and let him walk away when the dryer became too much. He was rewarded when he came to his drying spot with brushing and scratches and I was impressed at just how dry we managed to get him πŸ₯°
Super proud of you today Dash! πŸ†

Doing one of the manuals for the group classes and discussing jumping up on people and how to encourage polite greetings instead. It's something a lot of people have issues with so I thought I would share some of the strategies we work on in classes.

Polite greetings: These can be achieved in a number of ways. The key areas of focus are:

1. Management, management, management! Don’t allow your dog to rehearse jumping on people. If you aren’t confident your dog won’t jump up then they should NOT have access to people to rehearse it. This includes not letting them off lead at parks if they jump on park goers, not having them loose in your home when you have visitors or around your children if they jump on them, not allowing them to go up to people or walk too close to people in the street and so on. Have leads, baby gates, tethers, play pens etc set up so your dog cannot have free access to rehearse unwanted behaviours. Anything they practice they get better at.

2. Consistency! Ensure everyone is on the same page when interacting with your dog. Don’t allow one person to pat your dog when they have their paws up on them and then have another tell them off or push them down and another tell them to sit. It’s all very confusing for your dog and will only result in persistent jumping and or stress/confusion for your dog. Do not yell at your dog for jumping up or you will only see more stress-type behaviour which includes more jumping because of hyperarousal/anxiety and lots of licking to appease behaviour so it’s counter productive to reducing jumping. The more aversives you use the more jumping, licking and mouthing you get out of stress. You can also start to see fear and nervousness around people which we don’t want.

3. Proactive training: Teach your dog a β€˜go say hi’ cue and the person they’re saying hi to can offer their hand as a hand target. You can also toss food at their feet while they’re having a pat and then call your dog away before they get too excited. Ask your dog to sit while the person approaches and give them treats for staying calm. Practice with friends or family first so that you can also them to move away if your dog goes to jump up. You can tether your dog and practice approaching them to pat while they’re sitting and if they go to jump up you can back away out of reach of them. Teach them that sitting gets all the good things like food and affection. Ask them to go to a mat and settle when visitors come over until you release them to go and say hi. Initially you will need them on lead to help them be calm first. Practice going out of the door and back in yourself if that triggers your dog to jump up, tossing a scatter feed on the ground as you walk in is a good way to drive your dog away from you. Also teaching your dog to go and get a toy if they jump and mouth can be a great alternative behaviour to teach.

4. PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE! Set up training scenarios before real world scenarios. Recruit friends and family to help you practice. Don’t allow your dog to practice jumping in uncontrolled scenarios until your dog is already really reliable at keeping their four paws on the ground.

5. If your dog is mounting and mouthing too……seek help. If your dog is also displaying behaviours such as hu***ng legs, grabbing and ripping clothes and bruising you in any way, get some help. This indicates your dog is stressed and getting some professional help can help you identify what is triggering this behaviour and provide some strategies to address it.

It was nice to have a two week break from grooming but never want to not be surrounded by dogs so along with Bruno, we also had Oliver come and stay for a week. The arthritis is a bit hard on the old boy but Hunter still manages to play πŸ©πŸ•πŸ’™
