As a beekeeper, my ultimate goal would be to consolidate my 15 beehives into a single, large apiary with sufficient food sources and ample space, thereby streamlining biosecurity measures and mitigating the risks associated with varroa management under stricter regulations. Currently, managing six apiaries necessitates frequent visits to multiple locations, which may inadvertently spread pests and diseases. Implementing rigorous biosecurity protocols, including sterilizing equipment, utilizing clean protective gear and vehicle, is crucial as varroa can live off of a bee for 5-8 days. However, the financial burden of organic treatments, which cost over $400 plus shipping for 30 hives (which will cover two rounds of treatment if not expired) and necessitate rotation treatments to prevent varroa resistance, further complicates apiary management. Most treatments cannot be administered with honey supers in place and two of my apiaries are under surveillance, I kindly request understanding if my focus on apiary management limits my sociability.

Three hives requeened and second to last alcohol wash with metho done, result negative in Houghton. Three on reprieve, due to brood break and one was done with CO2, which puts the bees to sleep rather than pickle them, so only have word of mouth for that one. Will do them with the others in a few weeks.

Another apiary visit, 3 hives checked and three hundred nurse bees turned into pickled bees. Another negative result.
Requeened one hive, as the other has a queen and a good laying pattern, they have a reprieve until they build up a bit and see if temperament changes and will have their varroa alcohol wash done on next visit when they have capped brood.

Going to get the sidewalk chalk and draw up a speedway track for the German Shepard and its owner so they have something to walk on as they turn circles on path near letterbox. Then I’ll can expand the track and put up their times after viewing the ring camera and laugh at the antics.
Our blue lid rubbish bin is back out for your convenience, you know so you can pick up your dog p**p and not have to carry it home. Envision Maui from Moana “you’re welcome” 😂

Fresh C02 bottles for testing colonies that are building up numbers in nucs, alcohol wash is still the best way to test for Varroa mite I’ve been told.
I’ll try and remember to video both tests and show how I go about doing it, that is not saying how everyone should be doing the test, just an example of a test.

5 Alcohol washes and 1 drone uncapping done to check for varroa, all negative results.

5 new queens thanks to Mallee Ridge Honey, hopefully the in your face hives should settle after this. One lot now nasty to hive host so replace queen (she was a yellow dot queen starting shotgun brood pattern), 2 others are nasty to anyone but me while inspecting the hives but settled quickly after just not pleasant for helpers, one to go into a hive that queen may not have made it back from mating flight or wasn’t laying yet, and the last beautiful queen to go into my apiary with Caucasian bees for breeding my own queens.

Nice cold drink needed now 🧃

The photograph is self-explanatory. No Varroa count was detected in one of our Hills apiaries, with testing set to continue this week. A lovely nectar flow is currently occurring in the surrounding trees, allowing the bees to focus on building up their stores; we will not be harvesting honey from that apiary at all.
