The story of Albie and his sore toe!

This brave boy had to have a sedation to get his dew claw removed after unfortunately getting it caught on something. He woke up in a comfy bed, with a pretty bandage and was hand fed chicken.

Chicken (the cat) and her unfortunate tail mishaps 🐈‍⬛

This sweet girl wound up in a painful situation after dislocating her tail! Dr Sofia confirmed the suspicion via an X-ray, clearly showing the separation between the tail vertebrae. 🦴

Dr Sofia then performed a tail amputation on Chicken, bandaged the remaining stump, started her on pain relief and sent her home for recovery!

3 weeks later and Chicken is doing well albeit, a much shorter tail.

Happy New Year to all of our wonderful clients 🎉

Our furry friends may be tempted to lick up spilled alcohol or finish half-empty glasses. Particularly creamy or sweet flavoured cocktails.

Alcohol can cause:
- Severe irritation to the gut
- Excessive drooling
- Vomiting
- Electrolyte disturbances
- Altered glucose metabolism
- Poor temperature regulation
- Heart and Brain disturbances

If your dog has consumed alcohol, it is important to contact the emergency centre straight away. A toxic dose may require urgent treatment. The sooner the treatment, the better the outcome.

Meet Layla, she is a 6yr old French Bulldog who was in recently for her desexing procedure. 🫶

Layla is what we call a Brachycephalic breed (AKA dogs with flat faces). These breeds include Pugs, Bulldogs, Boston Terriers, Boxers, Brussels Griffons and Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. 🐾

As a pet owner, it's essential to know that these breeds require extra care, especially when it comes to anaesthesia! Due to their shorter skull there is less room for the necessary anatomy. This causes difficulty in breathing which can lead to oxygen deprivation.

At PATP, we take extra precautions to ensure the safety and comfort of our brachycephalic patients:
- Pre-anaesthetic assessments to evaluate breathing and overall health.
- Customised anesthesia plans to minimize risks.
- Close monitoring during and after anaesthesia.
- Post-operative care to ensure a smooth recovery. Including a nebuliser when necessary (as seen in the images) to help thin any mucous and moisten the airways.

If you have a brachycephalic breed, it's crucial to work with a veterinarian who understands their unique needs.

Its the final count down to Christmas, only 2 sleeps to go 🎅🎄

Make sure to:

Chico enjoying some post op cuddles!

🐾 Dental Care 101: Professional veterinary dental cleanings aren't just about fresh breath. They involve a comprehensive examination, pre-anaesthetic blood tests, scaling, polishing, and potential X-rays to detect hidden dental issues. This procedure requires anaesthesia to ensure a thorough and safe cleaning.

‼️Did you know that Fleas can lay up to 50 eggs per day! just one untreated flea can turn into thousands within weeks. Regular monthly prevention is crucial for keeping your pet and home flea-free. Adelaide’s warm climate makes year round prevention essential. ‼️

Meet Lenny the Spoodle, and the nasty grass seeds that were causing havoc in his ears!

Lenny presented to the clinic with a head tilt, and painfully reacted to his ears being touched. Dr Melanie admitted him for a sedation to assess his ears and look what she found!

These grass seeds had found their way in to Lenny’s ears and were causing a lot of discomfort. As a result of the grass seeds he also developed an infection in both ears.

After a deep clean and medication started, Lenny is on the road to recovery 🫶
