It’s always important for early exposure to be positive!
With Bailey, I made sure she was comfortable with the brush before I even brushed her. I reinforced her calmness and showed her that is wasn’t a big deal and that she could relax.
Look at her now, not a care in the world (except trying to eat the hair that has been brushed off 😆🤦♀️)

What do I mean by this?
Well, take a back clip harness for example. Just because a dog is being walked on one of these harnesses, it doesn’t necessarily mean the dog will pull BUT these harnesses are known to support and therefore reinforce pulling. This means the pulling behaviour will become more frequent and/or intense as it has been continually reinforced.
When you compare this to a slip lead, the mechanics of the lead discourage pulling meaning it is less likely to occur.
That is why it is important to not only chose the right equipment but know how to use it and understand what behaviours it may reinforce or discourage.
