As dogs get older one of the most common issues we see as veterinarians is the development of osteoarthritis. 🦴

Osteoarthritis is a progressive and irreversible joint disease characterised by inflammation and degeneration in one or many joints in the body.

The most common signs of arthritis in dogs include:
- Struggling to get up in the morning
- Difficulty going up and down stairs, getting into the car or onto the lounge
- Lameness in one or multiple legs
- Walking stiffly
- Reduced interest in going for walks

Fortunately these days we have LOTS of options to manage arthritis in dogs and make sure they are as comfortable as possible for as long as possible.

If you think your dog could be suffering from arthritis organise an appointment with one of our veterinarians to have a chat about the best options for your fur baby. 🐶🐶🐶

As the weather starts to warm up, the beaches and the dog parks get filled with dozens of dogs of all different breeds and temperaments. 🐶

✔️It is important to ONLY let your dog off lead if you know they will play safely with other dogs
✔️Always be watching and mindful when your dog is engaging in an interaction with another dog
✔️If you notice any fearful or aggressive behaviour act promptly and take your dog away from the situation

It is important as pet owners to be responsible for social interactions of our dogs in public spaces to minimise the likelihood of dog attacks

As the weather starts to warm up in South Australia it is time to remember that pets should NOT be walked during the middle of the day on warm, sunny days as the pavement and road can become extremely hot and damaging to their paw pads.

General rule of thumb for testing pavement temperature is the 7 second rule. If you are unable to leave the back of your hand on the pavement for up to 7 seconds because it is too hot, then it is TOO HOT for your pet to walk on.

Has your dog been shaking or scratching their ears recently?
They could be developing an ear infection or have something stuck in their ear.

Ear infections are one of the most common concerns we see at veterinary clinics and even more common in the warmer months.

Ear infections are very common and can be caused by a range of different factors such as excess water in the ears, allergies, hairy ears, excessive wax production or small ear canals.

If you think your dog is shaking or scratching their ears more than normal book an appointment with one of our veterinarians today.

Does your dog constantly lick their paws? 🐾
If they do they could be suffering from allergic skin disease.
Licking of the paws is the most common sign of allergic skin disease in dogs as their feet has the highest contact with one of the most common allergens; grass.

If you think your dog could be experiencing allergies it is best to organise an appointment with one of our veterinarians at Fleurieu Veterinary Centre to allow us to assess your dogs skin and formulate a tailored management plan to make your dogs skin is comfortable.

As the weather warms up a lot more dogs are down going for walks at the beach. 🐡🐡🐡
One of the many toxicities we commonly see at Fleurieu Veterinary Centre is puffer fish toxicity.

Puffer fish contain a toxin called tetradotoxin which is present even after death of the fish.
Ingestion of puffer fish can be quickly fatal in dogs. Even licking or chewing on a puffer fish can cause serious side effects.

Common side effects of puffer fish toxicity include drooling, vomiting, weakness (in particular in the hindlimbs), difficulty breathing and death.

If you see your dog lick, chew or eat a puffer fish get to your local veterinary clinic as soon as possible.

Watch out for bee stings this springtime! 🐝🐝🐝

Dogs bitten by bees or other insects can typically present with swelling of the face/nose, sudden limping or licking of a single paw or hives.

In a small percentage of dogs it can trigger an anaphylactic reaction which will present with sudden vomiting, diarrhoea, lethargy, wobbliness, shaking, pale gums and difficulty breathing. This is an emergency and you should get your dog to your local veterinary clinic asap.

If you think your dog has been bitten by a bee please contact your local veterinarian and organise an appointment.

Does your dog or cat have smelly breath?🤢

If you are concerned your dog could be suffering from bad breath or dental disease then we strongly recommend booking in with one of our veterinarians to have a dental consultation to assess and grade their teeth and discuss any recommended dental work.

We perform regular dental procedures here at Fleurieu Veterinary Centre including digital dental x-rays, surgical extractions, scaling and polishing
