Herd
Herd, what I feel it means to be Herd. The video speaks for itself. There is a sense of knowing in a herd, knowing is felt before it becomes a thought, yet it is also has not yet become a feeling. There is more than just good mutual communication in a herd. There is safety in relationships & each member is attuned to the other & the needs of their herd as a whole. There is a sense of community as much as there is individuality.
I believe within a herd is an embodiment of communion and community. I stand while you sleep, then you stand while I sleep. Which took place partial in this video - Ben went down to rest after standing over Skye and shortly after Skye woke up to stand over him. They could have both stayed down, but there was a mutual exchange between them, which Indy seemed to in part encompass.
Everyday I feel privileged to step into the world of horses knowing much of what I have learnt was from a herd, within a herd, for the herd. That’s another story, but the basis of what I teach in liberty doesn’t come from knowledge passed down from someone who taught me, I’m all self taught. The horses taught me the most, I had to become herd, to be heard.
Knowing for me is like an exchange of energy, something that drops in, you just know, then feel, then think. This experience isn’t of you nor does it start with you, it is energy that encompasses you & others where an exchange of information flows between the energy connecting you. Knowing is deeper than communication on a surface or visible level.
I could tell stories & share experiences from past, to what I do on the daily on deeper subject & what it means to be apart of herd for me personally.. but I’d sound like a fruit cake 🤪 That said if asked I share these things & I don’t mind if people think I’m a tad weird, coz I am. 😅
To that point I wouldn’t have enough space to type what I’d want to share anyway, which is why, a long time ago I wrote part of a book that was published on

Best way to end a ride, with play 💕 He’s such a good boy the other day, can’t wait for our next lesson.
Continuing my birthday announcement 🎉😍 Go read it if you haven’t! Gizelle’s first time having a little go at some liberty… my gosh she is just amazing! Cannot wait to see what the future holds. So in love with this little mare 🥰🥹
Raw training footage 🎥 Super proud of Nixon! Today was the first time we did liberty with another horse on the arena that wasn’t apart of his usual herd, Nix was the perfect gentleman.
He had a bit of energy to burn 💪 so we worked on double whip cues (which he in the past he has found a little challenging but he’s progressing amazingly) and staying calm but powerful in his slower draw.
Nixon is a very internally emotional and sensitive horse, as relaxed as he is he’s also been one that’s taken a long time to let me in and progress on things together… anyone else who has done things with him without me present knows if he dosnt want to or dosnt have that relationship with you, he’s like no thanks. 😅 In saying that when I went to look at him the “he’s evasive and stubborn” was what sold me, I said “perfect! I like a challenge”🤣 and he’s been totally worth it!

“If you send a horse away, he will know right where you want him.”
One of the key topics we discussed over the Liberty for the Horse Clinic on the weekend was “What happens when your horse leaves?.. because at some point they will.”
Within my personal philosophy I am always seeking communion with the horse, this can only be acquired through developing what I like to call a ‘framework of safety’.
No one’s taught me how to ‘train a horse at liberty’, in fact there are a lot of methods of ‘training’ that take away exactly what ‘liberty’ is meant to be from the horse. I’ll leave that to be answered in my next clinic or I’ll be typing all night..
I can’t remember where I heard “If you send a horse away, he will know where you want him… away” but I couldn’t agree more.
There where some amazing examples over the weekend of the horse having the autonomy to leave at liberty, but the safety within their liberty to return to their human - someone of safety.
Building trust requires us to sacrifice our attachments & need to control an outcome, also our emotional response to being ‘left’.
I shared on this recently in a post.
Safety is about the horse & human being together in a way that cultivates communion through communication & connection. But that start with ‘self’… inward reflection & awareness on the humans part.
When we are able to hold space within a framework of safety we can begin to cultivate connection - that is draw. 10 years ago I called this “stay with me, be with me & come with me”, still relevant to the process.
We can ask a horse to move in any direction with energy whilst keeping the intention & connection on ‘be with me’.. BUT it has to be authentic, without attachment of outcome, without ego justifying a belief that the horse has to respond in order to meet my emotional need or there is need for punishment. That’s a whole other topic I covered in my recent clinic.
Draw is something

This clinic series isn’t just about liberty training techniques & manoeuvres.. In this clinic series we will go beyond training methodologies & go deeper into what the essence of liberty really is, how it feels for the horse & human, how to develop relational safety within your partnership & come into attunement & communion with your horse.💗
It does not matter whether or not you have done liberty before, what discipline you follow or the level you are at with your horse,
both you & your horse will benefit from the content covered & knowledge you will gain through this clinic.
