From shelter dog to farm boy, Jack is living his best life ✨

"Just wanted to let you know “Toffee” now known as Jack (Acronym for our names; Julian, Adrian, Cameron, Kim) is loving his new life on the farm 🩵

He is coming along in leaps and bounds with his recall training, starting puppy training this week, and loves his morning walks around the farm.

He has made new friends with Kevin the Emu and Mack the neighbour’s Labrador, and is very intrigued with the back neighbour’s cows.

We’ll be getting chickens soon so fingers crossed the Maremma in him kicks in and he loves his chill guardian life 🙂"

Guess how long Phil was missing before he was reunited with Sharmaine 😱

When Phil was brought to AWL as a stray, our team were so excited to find that he had a microchip. That's how we were able to contact his owner, Sharmaine.

When Sharmaine arrived at the shelter to take Phil home after he was missing for an entire year, Phil recognised her immediately and climbed into her arms for a cuddle!

We couldn't have done it if Phil wasn't ✨ microchipped ✨

Hip, hip, hooray - It’s our 60th birthday!🥳🎂

On this day 60 years ago, passionate animal advocate and Animal Welfare League founder Joy Richardson officially opened our doors to animals in need. She wanted to create a better world for animals, one in which every single one had a loving home.

As many of you know, the nearly 4,000 animals who come to AWL each year rely entirely on your support for the food, shelter and vet care they need while they wait for their new families to come and adopt them. Without you, they’d have nowhere else to go.

From all of us here at AWL (people and animals!), thank you for your support and love for animals in need. Together, we can spend the next 60 years connecting pets, people and community through a lifetime of love and memories.

Join the AWL team 🎉 We're opening a new Op Shop in Unley and we're on the lookout for volunteers to join the team in the roles of Team Leader and Shop Assistant.

We'll provide you with all the training you need to thrive in these roles, and you'll gain valuable experience that could open doors to other volunteer and paid positions within Animal Welfare League and the wider animal welfare industry.

As you may or may not know, all profits from our Op Shops go straight back to supporting the animals in our shelters. This means that our dedicated Op Shop volunteers directly impact the lives of the animals who come through our doors, giving them the second chance they all deserve at a life with a loving family.

PROOF 🕵️ that foster carers change lives ❤️

"Hello everyone! My name is Winnie and I am a beautiful tuxedo girl who has been in foster care since early this year.

I have had two foster mums and they both love me because I am so sweet and friendly, and just happy to hang out quietly with you.

I came to AWL with my babies – they were so sweet and I was such a good mumma to them that my first foster mum named me Winnie – for Winnie-the-Pooh bear!

Once my babies had grown big enough, we all came back to the AWL shelter and my babies found homes really quickly. But I got really stressed at the shelter and to try to cope I started over-grooming and ended up with a bald bottie ☹

That’s when I went to stay with my next foster mum and dad, so that my bottie could grow hair back! I spent the first few days in the cupboard but then I started coming out cautiously to say hi to my new foster Mum, who was very impressed with my beautiful golden eyes and the swipe of white that goes from my nose to my chest.

She has also discovered that I looooove having my head scratched and those looong pets down to the tip of my tail are the best.

Sometimes my foster dad comes in and serenades me with his guitar playing. I haven’t got to joining in on the singing, but I think I could with practice.

I'm really settled at my foster home but I do need to find a quiet, gentle household where I can chill out and relax and spend time getting to know you. You don’t need to worry about me being lonely because I'm one of those cats who is super happy to really enjoy a good head rub and scratch, then just hang out in my own space – usually in the warmest patch of the room."

"I adopted Timmy on the 30th of July. When I met him, he would constantly hiss and wouldn't let me pat him. But now he loves to be picked up and cuddled, and enjoys sleeping in my bed. I’m so happy that I was able to adopt him from AWL. He is definitely well loved."

BEND and SNAP 😜 That's what Elle Woods has been busy teaching all the other cats - "it has a 98% success rate of getting an adopter's attention AND when used appropriately it has an 83% rate of return on a request for Churu", Elle says.

Forget Stephen King, Pony's mum writes the best stories 😱❤️

"Since joining our family Pony the German Shepherd has seamlessly woven himself into the fabric of our lives, bringing boundless joy and endless wagging tails. At nearly 3 years old, Pony has proven to be a bundle of energy and affection, with a heart as big as his appetite for treats!

Pony has formed an inseparable bond with Aaron, our family's steadfast companion, following him around with adoration that knows no bounds. And while Pony has tried to extend his friendship to our feathery chicken friends, it seems they're still warming up to the idea of playdates without the chase!

Speaking of household dynamics, Pony received a swift lesson in feline etiquette from our resident cat, Mog, who wasted no time in establishing who rules the roost. They've reached a mutual understanding, albeit one with a healthy dose of tolerance mixed in!

In between his daily adventures Pony has been living his best life indulging in luxurious baths, making a splash at the beach, and developing a newfound obsession with car rides that rivals his love for treats!

However amidst all the tail-wagging excitement, we've noticed a few areas where Pony could use a little extra guidance. To address his distress when Aaron is away, we're scheduling a visit to the vet for a heart-to-heart chat about separation anxiety. Additionally, we're thrilled to announce that a dog trainer will soon be joining our family to assist Pony and us with mastering the art of recall and following cues.

In conclusion, Pony has not only stolen our hearts but has also become an integral part of our family. We are endlessly grateful to Animal Welfare League for bringing him into our lives and we can't wait to continue sharing his journey with all of you."

🚨 INTROVERT ALERT 🚨

Meg's mum sent us a Happy Homes update and we're so happy with her progress 🥰

"Meg (Meggles) is well and settling in after almost a week of being part of my family. Meg took a little time to get her bearings, but after a day or so she ventured out of the cat carrier and found a cozy spot on a clothes shelf in my wardrobe. I have since fixed this space up for her and added her blankets.

She is happy - I talk to her when she's in the wardrobe, call out to her all the time and while I put her food out she watches me from a distance, she doesn't hide away. She is eating well and she is happily using several littler trays.

I don't know what she does in the daytime while I'm at work, but at nighttime she is active (eating and walking around). I have even played with her in the dark with a cat wand with ribbons.

Bugsy is my other cat (he came to our family 2 years ago from AWL). He is quite inquisitive and seeks Meg out to talk and coax her to play. Meg is still getting to know him and has her moments at night if he gets too close. He walks away and comes back later to talk some more. There is no doubt that, eventually, they will start to bond.

I came home one day this week and the cat tunnel was in the middle of the lounge area. I can only guess that Meg may have been playing in it as Bugsy doesn't like it.
It will take her a while to settle, but rest assured Bugsy and I are providing her with a happy, warm environment."
