A**l Glands!

If you've ever experienced the odour of your pet's a**l gland liquid, you'll know it is a stench that is not easily forgotten. We regularly do a**l gland expressions at Petmania - probably on average 5 or 6 a day, at the moment.
If you've got a pet who gets their a**l glands expressed, this video is quite educational to understand how it's done. We use the internal method at Petmania, so we can feel if there is gritty contents or if the gland itself is thickened.

Sometimes we are asked to 'just check' the condition of the glands rather than expressing them. As you can see from this video, it is in the expressing of the glands that we check the condition and contents of them, so this is done simultaneously as one procedure.

We are always happy to teach you how to perform this procedure at home too, however most owners prefer to be blissfully unaware what happens at an A**l Gland Expression visit :)

Just in case you need reminding… we’re closed for the day and will reopen at 8am on Tuesday 7th May.

There are some great emergency centres nearby if your pet needs help: Albany Creek, Stafford, Kedron and North Lakes.

💜 It’s World Veterinary Day, so today we celebrate the veterinarians of Petmania Vets. 💜

Dr Tanya, Dr Amy, Dr Lauren, Dr Celeste and Dr Candice are responsible for making the easy and difficult decisions with you, and walking beside you through the diagnostic and treatment processes.
Their senses are in overdrive as soon as your pet walks into the room. They are watching, hearing, smelling and feeling all the little things about your pet that might mean bigger things.
They spend their days walking between heartbreaking euthanasias and into heartwarming success stories and kitten cuddles.
No two days are the same, and they wouldn’t have it any other way.

We thank our vets, and all the vets of the world, for all the parts of them they give to their work.

Today wraps up Veterinary Receptionist’s Week, where we show our gratitude for the effort, love and care that each of our Receptionists put into their work.
Kristyn, Phoebe, Katy, Jordi and Maddy are the first and last faces you see when you visit Petmania and we’re so glad they are.
They manage the running of the day, take the distraught phone calls, creatively shuffle appointments to ensure the pets in need are seen promptly, and liaise with everyone from specialists to aftercare teams.
They’re the ones that tactfully keep us on track, and know the most minuscule, sweet details about each patient.
They take pride in presenting the clinic beautifully too, so that it’s looks, feels (and smells!) like somewhere we would want to visit for our own health appointments.

It’s not accurate to say we’d be lost without them - we just wouldn’t be open, full stop.

So 💜 thank you 💜 to each of the Receptionists for everything they bring to the Petmania family.

We'll be closed for the Public Holiday, but our colleagues in the emergency vets at Brisbane Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Service and Pet Emergency will be ready to help should you need them.
We reopen Friday morning at our normal time of 8am.

Yes! We use and recommend Probiotics for both cats and dogs.
These are sold as 7 day courses during times of illness, or by the tub for ongoing use.

Probiotics are kept in the fridge, so you'll just need to ask us to grab you some on your way out.
