Leo has always been a healthy boy, but in early May he developed unusual symptoms of excessive drooling, restlessness, pacing, and circling. He was taken to his regular vet, Companion Vet Care, who performed preliminary blood tests and Xrays, before he transferred to the team at QVS. On examination, the QVS team found that Leo was showing signs of neurological disease. An MRI of his brain confirmed the presence of a 1.7cm X 1.9cm X 2.4cm tumour, suspected to be a rare ependymoma, based on the appearance, location, and large amount of fluid and blood that had built up around the tumour. The mass was causing a significant increase in the pressure in Leo's brain, and having quite a severe impact on his wellbeing (see MRI pic insert).

He was subsequently referred to our radiation therapy team at BVSC. Lead Radiation Vet, Dr Kate Bruce and remote Radiation Oncologist, Dr David Lurie (ONE Oncology) met with Leo's very dedicated owners, and immediately rushed him through for urgent treatment. Leo underwent a treatment course of 3 consecutive daily radiation treatments. Luckily for Leo, he has responded very well so far. We recently saw him for his 2 week recheck, and he's already shown significant improvement in his neurological signs due to shrinkage of the tumour. We expect this effect will continue for the next few months as the radiation keeps working, and hope for further improvement and a significant extension of his life.

Here he is pictured getting cuddles from our super golden retriever-loving nurse, Mickey ❤️

Recently, Julia—our Lead Veterinary Radiation Therapist and operator and trainer of diagnostic and RT-planning CTs at BVSC—had the pleasure of visiting Greencross Vets Carrara to deliver training in Radiation Safety for CT machine use.

Since ionising radiation is involved in every CT scan, it’s essential that operators have a thorough understanding of the safety principles behind this powerful diagnostic tool. Julia was invited to share her knowledge with their fantastic team, training two veterinarians and six veterinary nurses on best practices and safety protocols.

The session sparked great discussions on how these safety principles apply directly to their own CT setup. The team at Greencross Carrara were incredibly engaged, asked insightful questions, and fostered a welcoming environment for learning. Julia shared that it was a privilege to work with such a motivated and professional group!

Today is Do it for Dolly Day💙
While we wear blue every day, today we wear it with purpose. It’s a day to pause, reflect, and honour Dolly Everett — a young girl whose life was tragically cut short due to bullying.
Dolly’s story is a powerful reminder of the importance of kindness. Sadly, our own veterinary industry has also experienced heartbreaking losses, with bullying contributing to the su***de of too many passionate, talented vets and vet nurses. It's a painful truth that we must continue to address, not just today but every day.
By sharing Dolly’s story, we hope to inspire change — especially among our youth — so that the values of empathy, compassion, and respect grow into adulthood. Let's strive for a world where we all think before we speak, and lead with kindness always.
In Dolly’s memory, we ask that you take a moment today to be kind — to yourself, to your colleagues, and to those around you. Remember the powerful message inspired by Dolly: “Speak even if your voice shakes.”
If you or someone you know is struggling, please reach out. The Dolly's Dream Bullying Support Line is free, confidential, and available 24/7 on 0488 881 033.

This wild Eastern Short-neck Turtle got into serious trouble after accidentally swallowing a baited fish hook. Thankfully, they were brought into BVSC, where our hospital vet, Dr. Giles, gently sedated them and took an X-ray to assess the situation. The good news is that Dr. Giles successfully removed the hook before there was any damage, and our little friend was safely released back into the wild—right where they were found—thanks to the caring person who brought them in. A happy ending for this beautiful native animal.

Meet beautiful Angel! In December 2023, he was diagnosed with diabetes by his primary care vet Albany Creek Veterinary Surgery. He was treated with insulin, but his owners were struggling to control his climbing blood glucose levels despite increasing his dose of insulin. He was also gaining weight, and in late 2024 starting making a loud snoring noise in his sleep. He was referred to QVS, who found that Angel was exhibiting a few classic signs of a condition called acromegaly (aka feline hypersomatotropism). Acromegaly can occur due to a tumour growing in the pituitary gland in the brain. This tumour causes excessive production of growth hormone in the body. Growth hormone has many essential functions, and when in oversupply, it can lead to uncontrollable diabetes, excessive growth of internal organs, weight gain, a broad appearance to the face, snoring, a heart murmur, and poor coat condition. Angel was exhibiting many of these signs, and blood tests supported this diagnosis.

Angel was referred to BVSC for a CT scan, where he was diagnosed with a small mass in the pituitary gland in his brain, and associated Feline Hypersomatotropism. Luckily for Angel, this type of disease is highly responsive to radiation therapy. The following week he completed a course of just 3 daily radiation treatments at BVSC to address his pituitary tumour. Cats that undergo this treatment have a 95% chance of achieving better control of their diabetes, with one third achieving complete remission. The treatment is also associated with an excellent median survival time of about 3 years.

Angel did not have any side effects from his radiation, and will having ongoing monitoring as his diabetes improves. What a gorgeous boy!

At BVSC, continued education is a cornerstone of our team’s philosophy and a vital aspect of our industry. It is not only our veterinarians who are required to attend seminars and webinars to maintain their professional registration, but also our nursing staff.

We are proud to share that our nurses recently attended the annual Veterinary Nurses Council of Australia Conference. Our Surgery Nurses, Anna and Zoe along with Chemotherapy Nurse, Momoko, had the opportunity to learn about cutting-edge equipment and the latest advancements in veterinary nursing care. Even more exciting, our talented Momoko had the honor of speaking at the event, where she showcased her expertise to a large audience of attendees.

As our Primary Chemotherapy Nurse, Momoko’s passion for oncology and her commitment to providing a safe, calm environment for our patients is truly inspiring. She is a remarkable reflection of our core values. Her presentation on "Recent Advances in Radiation Therapy: Making the Impossible Possible" was a highlight, educating attendees about the incredible capabilities of our new Varian True Beam Linear Accelerator and its ability to expand the scope of patients we can now treat.

We would like to extend our heartfelt congratulations to Momoko on this remarkable achievement. We also want to thank her for being an outstanding ambassador, not only for the BVSC team but also in the ongoing fight against cancer.

This is Denver, a beautiful 10 year old Australian Shepherd who was referred by Dr Amy Vascotto from Your Pet Home Vet. He saw Dr Darren Fry at BVSC to assess a sudden onset of weakness affecting the right side of the body. The presumptive diagnosis was a "Fibrocartilagenous Embolism" or FCE. This happens when small pieces of cartilage embolise into the arteries supplying blood to the spine, resulting in a sudden loss of blood supply. There is no known conventional treatment for this condition, but over time, many dogs will improve. Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) however seems to significantly hasten this recovery.
So, Denver was placed into BVSC's HBOT chamber where he breathed high levels of oxygen at twice atmospheric pressure. After 3 daily one hour treatments, his symptoms had markedly improved and a week later there were no signs of weakness at all.
HBOT is used in human medicine for a wide variety of conditions and at BVSC we also find this treatment safe and effective for many conditions. We use this either alongside conventional treatment or in cases where other treatments can be ineffective such as FCE. As the pictures show, Denver was very relaxed in the chamber which is our experience with almost all the patients we treat.

Meet Aki – the fur-bulous fashionista with an Instagram full of adorable outfits! 🐾
Aki is not just a stylish little star, but also one of our dedicated patients here at BVSC. He’s been a long-term part of the ARH Brisbane family, receiving care for his low-grade lymphoma, which is currently under control. Recently, Aki’s journey took an unexpected turn when a mast cell tumour was discovered on his right front leg. He had surgery, but due to the location, the team weren’t able to get clear tumour margins and that’s where we came in.
Aki was referred to BVSC for follow-up radiation therapy, and we’re happy to report that the treatment went smoothly. Over the course of just three consecutive days, Aki received stereotactic radiation – a highly effective treatment to minimize the risk of recurrence. Radiation is a powerful tool, especially when dealing with mast cell tumours that are difficult to remove entirely through surgery.
The good news is Aki’s prognosis is very positive, and we’re hopeful that his mast cell tumour will be well-managed for life. 💙
We’re so proud to be part of Aki’s journey and can’t wait to see more of his fabulous outfits! Be sure to check out his Instagram for all the latest updates.
