Meet Aki – the fur-bulous fashionista with an Instagram full of adorable outfits! 🐾
Aki is not just a stylish little star, but also one of our dedicated patients here at BVSC. He’s been a long-term part of the ARH Brisbane family, receiving care for his low-grade lymphoma, which is currently under control. Recently, Aki’s journey took an unexpected turn when a mast cell tumour was discovered on his right front leg. He had surgery, but due to the location, the team weren’t able to get clear tumour margins and that’s where we came in.
Aki was referred to BVSC for follow-up radiation therapy, and we’re happy to report that the treatment went smoothly. Over the course of just three consecutive days, Aki received stereotactic radiation – a highly effective treatment to minimize the risk of recurrence. Radiation is a powerful tool, especially when dealing with mast cell tumours that are difficult to remove entirely through surgery.
The good news is Aki’s prognosis is very positive, and we’re hopeful that his mast cell tumour will be well-managed for life. 💙
We’re so proud to be part of Aki’s journey and can’t wait to see more of his fabulous outfits! Be sure to check out his Instagram for all the latest updates.

For the month of February here at BVSC, we decided to make it the month of love. While we celebrated Valentine’s Day focusing on the love we share with our own pets, some of our team members’ fur babies wanted to share their own "Love Language." #

Brian is a handsome 3-year-old Kelpie who was playing in the backyard with his owners when he landed awkwardly after jumping for a toy. His owners brought him to our colleagues , where he was admitted for pain management and stabilisation. He was then internally referred to BVSC, where our Surgical Specialist, Dr. Harvey Saunders, assessed him. Unfortunately, it was determined that Brian had a spiral fracture of his right tibia. Dr. Harvey and his team promptly repaired the injury.(Please see radiograph images below) We’re happy to report that Brian has been recovering well since the procedure, and we are confident he’s eagerly awaiting the chance to get back to playing with his parents again soon!

MacDuff is an 11 year old Scottier Terrier who came all the way to BVSC from the team at Terranora Veterinary Clinic on the beautiful NSW coast. MacDuff visited his vets there recently following a few episodes of blood in his urine. The team performed an ultrasound which was suspicious for a bladder tumour, and urine cytology testing confirmed the presence of a transitional cell carcinoma. Scottish Terriers do have an increased risk for bladder tumours more than most other breeds.

The majority of bladder tumours form in what's called the 'trigone' (the area of the bladder that divulges into the urethra). Tumours in this location are not amenable to surgery, as there is a risk of causing irreversible damage to the urethra. There's also a high risk of tumour recurrence, as it's almost impossible to remove the entirety of the cancerous cells. Radiation therapy has fairly recently emerged as an excellent treatment option for inoperable bladder tumours, as the whole bladder can undergo treatment with very minimal impact on the health of the bladder.

MacDuff visited with Dr Rod Straw and Dr Kate Bruce (pictured here), and underwent a total of 20 daily radiation treatments (Monday-Friday over 4 weeks). This may sound like a lot, but it's essential to deliver a small dose of radiation over a long period of time in order to protect the sensitive bladder and bowel, while maximising response of the tumour. The treatment itself is quick, simple and painless, and MacDuff learned to love his time at BVSC, and play time with the nurses!

Just as blood donations play a vital role in saving human lives, they are equally crucial for our beloved fur babies. During times of high demand, when supplies are limited, we rely on generous donors to step in and help. At BVSC, we have a strict blood donor policy in place to ensure the safety of both our patients and donors, and our dedicated team ensures that these guidelines are upheld with the highest level of care.

Recently, we found ourselves in need of one of these life-saving donations, and our Nurse Caitlin brought her beautiful dog, Delta, to the hospital to donate. With Caitlin by her side, offering comfort and support, Delta’s donation made all the difference, providing the critical treatment needed for our patient. We're thrilled to report that, with the help of Delta's generosity, the patient was able to return home to their family.
As Delta is a cherished member of our BVSC family, we’re also delighted to share that, after receiving well-deserved praise, accolades, and some extra chicken treats from the rest of the team, she left with a little extra bounce in her step. We’re sure she couldn’t wait to share her heroic story with her siblings back home!

Meet Riley, a 3 year old Miniature Poodle who recently presented to BVSC specialist surgeon, Dr Harvey Saunders. Over the previous few months, Riley had occasional episodes of limping, hopping and 'skipping' with her back left leg in the air. Her signs progressively worsened, and she was becoming quite sore on that leg. She also developed a 'cowboy' stance, with bowed back legs when she was standing. All of these signs, along with her breed as a poodle are very typical for a luxating patella aka a dislocating kneecap. Harvey was able to confirm this on physical exam, and xrays of Riley's knees. Left uncorrected, this condition can lead to life-long pain and development of severe arthritis in the knee.
Riley proceeded to surgery with Dr Harvey, who performed a wedge trochleoplasty and a tibial tuberosity transposition (TTT). The aim of this surgery is to deepen the groove that the patella (kneecap) sits in, and adjust the angle of the leg and tendons so that it remains snug in place, and doesn't slip out of position.
Riley (pictured here with Dr Kate Bruce) has had an excellent recovery, and is already using that leg very well just 2 weeks post-operatively. Her x-rays here show the location of her patella both before surgery, and the correct location after surgery. Merry Christmas beautiful Riley!

This is handsome Bleau who starred in our BVSC Christmas Booth this week (as well as our Elf on the shelf video). Bleau had a mast cell tumour removed by his vet at Mountain Creek Veterinary Clinic in mid November. Histopathology testing confirmed it was a high grade mast cell tumour so he was sent to BVSC for treatment with our radiation oncology team where he completed 3 consecutive days of stereotactic radiation therapy to the scrotal scar to minimise the chance of anything coming back. He was a very brave boy during his treatment, and will be returning in a few weeks to commence chemotherapy. We look forward to seeing you again soon beautiful Bleau!

Meet gorgeous Tiffany, a 14 year old Maltese X, who is affectionally known by her family as the 'Party Chicken'! This little Party Chicken' has been coming to BVSC for a while for monitoring of a heart murmur, large adrenal glands, and epilepsy.

Most recently she presented as an emergency after collapsing at home. BVSC's Internal medicine specialist, Dr Darren Fry performed an echocardiogram and identified a small volume pericardial effusion. This refers to the build up of fluid within the sac that houses the heart. This fluid can lead to pressure build-up around the heart, and impede function. A mass causing the effusion was suspected and so after she was stablised, a CT scan was performed which highlighted a tumour in her heart.

While surgery is sometimes possible for heart tumours, it is a risky procedure, and Tiffany's mass was located deep within the muscle of the heart, making it unresectable. She was instead seen by our radiation team, Dr Rod Straw and Dr Kate Bruce. Recent advancements in radiation therapy technology at BVSC means that we can treat tumours in the heart with millimetre precision, protecting the heart itself from any significant damage. Tiffany was treated with just 3 consecutive days of stereotactic radiation therapy.

Recently she presented for her 2 week recheck, and is doing exceptionally well with no side effects! She's pictured here recovering from anaesthesia in 5 star comfort - special thanks to all who contributed to the recent towel donations!

Theodore is a beautiful 11 year old cat who originally saw Red Hill Veterinary Surgery in September after his owners had noticed a few weeks history of him being wobbly and uncoordinated when walking. He also had a habit of circling to the right. He was referred to BVSC and underwent a work up with the internal medicine team's Dr Hannah Kwong during which time a large mass was noted to be affecting his brain. With the appearance of the mass, this was the classic location for a type of tumour known as a 'meningioma'.
Theodore then underwent surgical removal of the mass via a craniectomy procedure with Dr Harvey Saunders and the surgical team at BVSC. The dedicated care, support and attention to detail meant Theodore got through the surgery fantastically and was able to go home a few days later, becoming his bright, bold and beautiful personality once more. We are all so proud of you Theodore!
