This little hooded cutie is called Makaveli, a 4 year old French Bulldog who was referred to BVSC by his veterinary team Curtis Street Vets at Pimpama . Makaveli underwent surgery at his vet to remove a squamous cell carcinoma tumour from his bottom jaw. Due to the location, all cancer cells could not be removed, and so he was sent to the BVSC radiation team for further treatment.
He first underwent a CT to check for any signs of cancer spread and fortunately it was all clear. Images from the CT scan are also used to plan the radiation treatment so we can make sure we accurately targeting the correct area. He then went on to complete 3 daily treatments of radiation therapy to his jaw to try and minimise risk of tumour recurrence.

Makaveli recovered very well after radiation. He recently came in for his 9 month recheck and repeat chest x-rays and remains in complete remission with no signs of cancer recurrence or spread elsewhere. What a champion!

At BVSC, we have had a lot to celebrate over the past few weeks! It was Dr Harvey's turn this week as we congratulated him on passing his ANZCVS Fellowship exams. The team celebrated his accomplishment with speeches from both Dr Rod and Dr Marvin, where special mention was made in relation to Dr Harvey achieving this on his first attempt. Gifts and cake were on order as we also said congratulations to Dr Eryn (Surgery Intern) who passed her membership exams. We’re super proud of our team!

Congratulations to Dr Hannah for passing her ANZCVS Fellowship exams! We recently celebrated her accomplishments with the team at BVSC, with speeches from Dr Rod and Dr Darren, two ceremonious colourful cakes, gifts and a lunch. It takes a lot of hard work and dedication to pass these exams. Congrats also to Dr Zsofia (Internal Medicine Intern) who passed her membership exams. We’re super proud of our team!

Meet gorgeous Ruby Rose who recently celebrated her 18th Birthday! As you can see she was surrounded by her loving family and besties, after hitting this amazing milestone! Ruby has recently been seen by BVSC for having an overactive parathyroid gland. This was removed successfully back in June 2023 and despite having a rebound low blood calcium level, Ruby has recovered so well! We are all so proud and happy for you Ruby!

Sally is a 13 year old German Shepherd X referred to BVSC from ARH. In May 2024 she was diagnosed with a left tonsillar squamous cell carcinoma at her regular vet, 'My Local Vet'. There was unfortunately also metastasis to the regional lymph node.
Sally commenced chemotherapy at ARH, but required some local treatment which is where radiation therapy at BVSC came in. Given the location and extensiveness of her mass, surgical removal was not possible and so radiation was our best option to try and shrink and stall the tumour.
Sally's human sister plays for the Firebirds (Brisbane Netball), so she's apparently had the whole team behind her keeping track of her progress 🙂
Sally recently completed her course of radiation and was a perfect girl for all her treatments. She is pictured here getting cuddles with Dr Kate (BVSC Lead Radiation Veterinarian). Keeping scoring goals Sally!

Oscar is a lovely Cavoodle that previously saw us back in February 2023. He was referred to BVSC by Albion Vet Surgery for a left cranial cruciate ligament rupture. He underwent a TPLO procedure to stabilise his knee and since then, he has bounced back and is back to his usual mischief! Thanks to his family for this wonderful video. We are so happy you are doing so well Oscar!

Just before Christmas last year, Shilo, who is a beautiful nine year old Husky, was diagnosed with cancer by his primary care vet atAnvet Kedron Veterinary Surgery team . He had multicentric B cell lymphoma which sadly, is a common malignant systemic cancer.
The good news is that he responded to chemotherapy and half body irradiation. He is a gorgeous character and we love him. He made many very good human friends at BVSC (as you can see in the photo).
His mum says every single day the family gets to spend time with Shilo is a miracle. Hers’s to a long and healthy remission spent with your wonderful family, Shilo.

This little cutie, Ted, is a 10 year old Maltese X who was referred from Gympie Veterinary Services - Consultations available 7 days with elevated liver enzymes on routine bloodwork. Abdominal ultrasound revealed an abnormal liver and laparoscopic liver biopsies were performed to collect samples for histopathology. A laparoscopy was used by the BVSC surgery team to explore the abdomen and biopsy organs through only two keyhole incisions. This allows for a less painful procedure with faster recovery. Lucky for Ted, the histopathology report returned with benign changes and his prognosis is excellent. He will return to his primary care vet for ongoing treatment and monitoring.

This lovely boy, Louis, a 3.9kg Papillon, presented to us as an emergency patient in March with a nasty break in one of the bones in his hindlimb after playing a game of tug-a-war.

Our BVSC surgery team fixed his leg, with a plate and screws and he was discharged the next day. His parents did a brilliant job of keeping this active boy quiet during the recovery period and at his follow-up assessment, his xrays showed that his bone had healed nicely.

Louis loves to swim and bounce in the waves at the beach, and he can’t wait to get in the water again! Dr Jamie-Leigh Thompson (pictured here) couldn’t resist giving this cutie a cuddle.

This week we celebrated World Veterinary Day at BVSC which is an annual event highlighting the lifesaving work performed veterinarians around the world.

We would like to thank our outstanding team of BVSC veterinarians who work tirelessly each and every day. They endlessly strive to deliver the highest standard of care for all of their patients.

Our nurses organised some beautiful gifts for our wonderful vets. The team enjoyed a delicious breakfast and a brief presentation honouring the special work that our team of veterinarians do every day. We are so very grateful for the care that they deliver to all our precious patients.

Early this year, Jupiter visited Toowong Family Vet for a simple dental procedure. On routine blood testing, some abnormalities were highlighted in her liver. An ultrasound was performed, which identified a large liver mass. She was subsequently referred to ARH and a CT showed a large, unresectable liver mass diagnosed as a hepatocellular carcinoma. The traditional treatment is surgery but because of the size and location of the tumour, this was not possible in Jupiter’s case.

Luckily for Jupiter, BVSC is now home to a TrueBeam Linear Accelerator, which has the capability of delivering radiation directly to high-risk areas such as liver tumours, while protecting the surrounding normal healthy tissue to minimise any associated side effects. Jupiter was seen by our radiation team, Dr Rod Straw and Dr Kate Bruce, and she underwent just 3 daily radiation treatments to treat her mass. Upon completion of her radiation course, Jupiter celebrated her 9th birthday and brought our team some delicious treats to share!
She recently presented for a check-up, and is doing great with no side effects. We expect a very good outcome. Gorgeous Jupiter is pictured here with our wonderful nurses, Dannielle and Amy!

We sometimes receive amazing and generous gifts from our grateful patients’ families like this gorgeous artwork.
Rambo is an 11 year old English Staffy who had a peripheral nerve sheath tumour in his neck right next to his spine. Dr Marvin successfully removed almost all the tumour and preserved Rambo’s front leg (usually the affected leg is amputated). The area where microscopic cancer persisted after surgery was right up at the spinal cord so it could not be removed by surgery so Rambo underwent radiation therapy in February using our wonderful TrueBeam Linear Accelerator which delivers high energy radiation with pin point accuracy.
Rambo is currently doing very well and enjoying many treats and going on walks. Thank you to his owners for this wonderful picture. Keep kicking goals Rambo!

Molly is a very lovely 4 year old Ragdoll that presented to her primary care veterinarian in November last year for nonspecific signs of a reduced appetite, weight loss and unusual behaviour. Poor Molly began circling and seemed quite disoriented. She was worked up for this problem at QVS during which time an MRI was performed and identified the presence of a forebrain tumour known as a 'meningioma'.
Molly was sent to BVSC where she underwent some intensive planning. BVSC’s Dr Harvey Saunders and Dr Craig Thomson then performed an intricate surgery to remove the tumour. This procedure involved removing a portion of her jaw and the overlying cheekbone to gain adequate access to the tumour.
Here she is, three months after the surgery! Molly is doing well, getting up to mischief, her appetite has returned to normal and she has now has a new lease on life!!! Isn't she beautiful.

This is beautiful Daphne and she “kicked nose cancer in the butt” (as written on her bandana). She had a nasal planectomy and maxillectomy performed to remove a squamous cell carcinoma (SCC).
Her primary care veterinarians at Toowong Family Vet referred her following a 2 week history of intermittent left-sided epistaxis (bleeding from the nose) and sneezing. She underwent CT imaging and a nasal mass was identified (see image).
BVSC’s surgery team led by surgery specialist, Dr Katherine Steele and surgery resident Dr Becky Leung performed the surgery to remove the mass at the front of her nose and maxilla to remove the cancer.
Daphne has recovered very well from surgery and wears her bandana with pride. She is pictured here with Dr Becky. Isn't she gorgeous!

This is sweet Max who recovered very well following a ventral slot surgery for a protruding spinal disc lesion.
His primary care veterinarians Ferny Grove Veterinary Clinic referred him to BVSC for neck pain and a right head tilt.
Max’s case was tricky and required collaboration with our medicine and surgery team led by Dr Mio Ayukai and Dr Craig Thomson. A CT was performed and resulted in a diagnosis of an intervertebral disc lesion that was located at the disc space of C2-C3.
Intervertebral disc disease (IVDD) or degeneration, leads to extrusion or protrusion (herniation) of an intervertebral disc into the vertebral canal. Surgery specialist, Dr Craig performed the surgery to decompress a HUGE disc lesion compressing Max’s spinal cord. Max stayed with us at the hospital for 14 days and was nursed daily by our wonderful nursing team that gave him so much love and care, until he was able to walk again. What a super star!

Bella does indeed deserve cake! Over four years ago when she was 12 years old, she was referred by her primary care veterinary team at Mcdowall Veterinary Practice, with high grade breast cancer. While mammary cancer in cats is not as common as in dogs, cats frequently get high grade cancers called mammary adenocarcinoma, but if they are treated early with the appropriate surgery and medical care, they can do well.

Back then, Dr Marvin and the surgery team performed a bilateral mastectomy. Dr Hannah and the medicine team at BVSC administered chemotherapy because there was lymphatic extension of the adenocarcinoma.

Here she is today, still cancer free and doing very well. Enjoy your cake beautiful Bella! You are amazing!

BVSC recently hosted the 2024 ANZCVS Surgery Residents Forum over the the weekend. It’s a great opportunity for residents from around the country to get together to share knowledge by presenting in an informal setting.
The event was sponsored by Knight Benedikt. The two days were very successful and it was our privilege to host a meeting of the minds of these very talented soon to become specialist surgeons.

This is beautiful Hamilton enjoying life 6 months after being diagnosed with an advanced (stage IV) intranasal carcinoma of the respiratory epithelium.

His primary care veterinarians at Coorparoo Veterinary Clinic and Virginia Family Vet referred him to BVSC for noisy breathing called 'stertor', as well as a brown nasal discharge that was not responsive to medical treatment. The specialised tests, imaging and biopsy performed at BVSC by Dr Hannah and her team led to the diagnosis.

Since radiation therapy is the only effective way to treat this cancer, Dr Kate and her team coordinated his care with Stereotactic Radiation Therapy (SRT) using our onsite TrueBeam linear accelerator. This involves only 3 consecutive days of treatment. His side effects were mild, although now he sports a very distinguished mask of light grey hair (See image) in his radiation field. His nasal signs have resolved and the follow-up CT shows his tumour has decreased in size over 80%. The new treatments we can perform with our new radiation therapy equipment are amazing and have helped over 100 patients since it was installed. Hamilton is very much a star patient!

At BVSC we were so pleased to receive a Christmas update on beautiful Luna who underwent surgery with us in May 2023.

Luna presented to Dr Kat as a referral from Eatons Hill Veterinary Surgery with complete paralysis of her hindlimbs. A CT scan was performed and showed large intra-dural disc extrusion between her 12th and 13th thoracic vertebrae. She underwent surgical decompression and had slow but steady improvement over the next few months.

At her last revisit, Luna was walking without assistance and we thank her owners for sending us these updates of their lovely Luna.

Meet Honey, a very affectionate 10 year old Fox Terrier Cross, all the way from Rotorua in New Zealand!

Last July, Honey was diagnosed with B-cell lymphoma. This is one of the more common cancers that we see in dogs, which usually results in enlargement of all the lymph nodes in the body. Without treatment this cancer is quite rapidly fatal. The good news is that it can be treated with chemotherapy and remission is common.

Maintaining long-term remission can be difficult treating using chemotherapy only. BVSC offers a very promising new treatment called 'half body radiation' which when combined with conventional chemotherapy, can result in a much better chance of long-term remission. Currently, this treatment is available in Australia at Brisbane Veterinary Specialist Centre (using a Varian True Beam Linear Accelerator for radiation) and not at all in New Zealand.

Honey's Mum was determined to seek out the best treatment options for Honey and worked together with Dr Nick Sygrove from Omokoroa Pet Vets in New Zealand to arrange a referral to Darren Fry at BVSC for this treatment.

Such was Honey’s Mum’s dedication that she temporarily moved to Brisbane so that she could be with Honey for the duration of the treatment, which extended until the end of November!

Honey coped with her treatments very well. Pictured with Dr Darren, Honey just had her final BVSC check and is in remission. She will be heading back to New Zealand at the end of January for further monitoring there.

We wish Honey and her Mum, all the very best for a healthy and happy future.

This is beautiful Gracie, a 10 year old Labrador (who has appeared on our page before). Gracie would always walk herself into the radiation therapy bunker at BVSC holding her leash in her mouth. She loves her oncology team and the feeling is mutual.
In 2016 she had a car accident which damaged the nerves in her front leg which had to be amputated and ruptured her cruciate ligament which was repaired by her vets at VSS and Vets By the Bay (Wellington Point).
In July 2017 she had radiation therapy for a soft tissue sarcoma (STS) of her hock and in 2020 she had another STS under her lower jaw which was also irradiated after surgery. In October last year, Gracie developed a small recurrence which was removed and then given a boost dose of radiation to her jaw area.
After all she’s gone through, Gracie would still walk in with the happiest of tail wags. She is pictured here getting a huge cuddle from Nurse Mickey before Christmas. Gracie really is a superstar!
