Over the past few months, our pets have become accustomed to having us around more. But like anything, it won’t last forever and life will return to what it once was, possibly leaving them confused, lonely and stressed.
So what can pet parents do to support their pets transition back to “normal work life” after COVID-19?
Here are some suggestions:
1️⃣ Start adjustments NOW. Leave your pets at home or outside, away from you, for short periods of time and gradually increase this.
2️⃣ Physically stimulate them through exercise and play. Like a walk, fetch or tug.
3️⃣ Help them use their brain and instincts with things to do like training, problem solving or searching for a favourite toy.
4️⃣ At meal times, rather than feed them from a bowl, use feeders, puzzles, snuffle mats or just scatter their food so they need to work for it.
5️⃣ Where possible, come home in your lunch break to check in on your pet and break up their day.
6️⃣ Leave them with a bone or chew (check with your vet or produce store for advice on doing this safely).
7️⃣ Engage with a dog trainer or behavioralist to form a plan fit for your pets needs.
8️⃣ Hire a pet sitter to come in a few times a week for home visits, walks or an adventure day out. This is where we can assist 🙋🏼♀️
9️⃣ Book your dogs in for Doggy Daycare once a week. This will tick the physical, mental and social boxes for most.
🔟 Ensure they have everything they need when you are away from the home including fresh water, shelter, things to do and separate from any potential hazards.
