Aunty T's Canine Connection

Aunty T's Canine Connection I assist in creating a better understanding between humans and their canines. I have all my life been a lover of all creatures great and small.
(1)

Always spending my spare time away from work training animals. Horses where my first training passion, but I've always had my love of dogs alongside this. I never realised that the connection I had with animals was unique. I just thought it was normal to feel the emotions and feelings of other species, but apparently it isn't, and the special connection I have is a valuable tool when it comes to t

raining and understanding animals. I love to work primarily with babies, they are a blank slate ready to learn and eager to please. But I find working with established animals even more rewarding, when I can assist with breaking years of behavior patterns that are cute when they are a baby, but not so much when they are a full-grown baby. Or with rescue dogs who have had terrible experiences or have formed unwanted behaviors due to stress or neglect. Whatever the behavior is that you would like to correct, encourage or discourage. I can easily assist and give you the tools to be a better pawrent and leader. Now this is not a one rule for all, as each animal is an individual and has individual needs as do the owners. One owner may love their beloved pet jumping up for a cuddle. Where others may just prefer them by their side. We can solve every problem, but we can create a solution for everybody.

Basic puppy training 🐶

Come
Sit
Down
Stay

Miss Gracie, in only 5 days has shown great potential with these basic commands, and loves learning a new language.

Did you know dogs don't speak English as a first language, but the do know how to sit, lay down, stay and come. Puppy training is not really about teaching them how to sit, stay etc. It's really about them learning our language so the can better understand what us humans need 🦮

Hydrobath training for young Mr Cooper, what better way to introduce your pup to the hydrobath. We have been doing daily training in the hydrobath without water or the pump going and today we upgraded to a quick spray.

All the pre work we did, ensured that Cooper was prepared and ready for the next step!

There is nothing better than giving your pups the best set up for success with positive reinforcement training.

Feel free to reach out if your pup dreads the bath, I can definitely make that change for you 🥰🥰

To complement training and desensitisation that assists with separation anxiety, anxiety from storms, car travel or public spaces.

Whatever your furbabies concern is, we can assist and provide long lasting solutions, that will ensure a better life for your furbabies and your family.

The advantage of using a product like Coco Kaboo Calm Companion Treatment Oil is that they use natural high quality carrier oils like coconut and calendula. These themselves assist with smoothing the dogs coat and keeping it flat this relieves the effects of the barometric changes in the air prior to a storm that cause a kind of goosebumps effect on the dogs, that makes their hair feel like it's standing on end. Coupled with the high grade essential oils chosen specifically to create calm and tranquillity this product is a must have in your toolbox.

Send me a message to find out more, your furbabies will thank you 💜🐾

How to keep dogs cool in summer: 10 tips for hot summer days.

Summer is the time for being out and about and enjoying the outdoors. But for our canine companions, prolonged sun exposure can cause heatstroke and other risks.

1. Provide a cool place for hot dogs Unlike us humans, dogs are not able to cool themselves through sweating. That’s why they need plenty of shelter from the sun for them to hide.
Kennels are not the best option for providing shelter in the summer because they can trap heat. On hot days, try to keep pets indoors in a cool area. If that’s not possible, ensure there is a shady and well-ventilated spot outdoors, with access to fresh drinking water.

2. Access to drinking water
Providing access to plenty of cool, fresh drinking water is especially important in warmer weather. Use terracotta or plastic bowls rather than metal, which is a heat conductor and evaporates water quicker.
For a refreshing treat, add ice blocks or frozen vegetables (like carrots and cauliflower) to the bowl.

3. Make a splash
Going for a swim is a great way to cool down in summer – even for our four-legged friends. Fill a kiddie pool with fresh water for your dog to cool off in, and place it in a shady part of the yard. Just make sure that your dog can’t get into the pool without you around, as not all dogs can swim as well as we might expect.
If you’re taking your dog to the beach for a cool down this summer, check that your pooch is allowed off lead. And if you plan to stay awhile, give them a shady spot to rest, like a beach tent.

A child's wading pool, positioned in a shady spot, is a good way to keep dogs cool in the summer heat.

4. Summer haircut
As the warmer weather approaches, it is important that you keeping on top of their grooming. If a pup’s coat becomes matted and traps moisture after going for a swim, it can lead to painful skin infections called ‘hot spots’.
Having your dog’s coat shaved, well brushed, clean and free of mats can help your dog to stay cool in summer and give them the best chance of preventing infections.

5. Book in a vet visit
Just as it’s important to book a visit to the dog groomers as the weather heats up, it can be helpful to make a vet appointment too. Dogs tend to stay outdoors longer and be more social in summer and come into contact with other animals, so ensure your dog’s vaccinations are up-to-date.
Additionally, ensure your dog is protected from parasites like fleas, ticks and mosquitoes.

6. Walk when it’s cooler
The afternoon heat is the worst time for walkies. Exercise is important all year round, but avoid the hottest part of the day by going for walks in the early morning or evenings, when the sun’s heat is less intense.
Avoid extremely hot days, as the hot asphalt or warm sand can burn their paws.

Warm sand and ashphalt can burn a dog's foot pads. Take your pooch on walks in the early morning or late afternoon when it's cooler.
Air temperature Asphalt temperature
25 °C / 77 °F 52 °C / 125 °F
31 °C / 87 °F 62 °C / 143 °F
35 °C / 95 °F 65 °C / 149 °F

7. Apply sunscreen
Overexposure to the sun can cause sunburn in pets, just like their human friends. This is especially risky to breeds with short hair, white fur and pink skin. Not only is sunburn painful, but it places your dog at risk of skin cancer.
Apply sunscreen to your dog’s ears, nose and coat, and limit their exposure to the sun.

8. Be car safe
Never leave your dog in the car unattended. Dogs can still overheat and die, even when the windows are down or if the vehicle is parked in the shade. It takes just six minutes for a dog to die in a car, according to the RSPCA.
The temperature inside a car can quickly reach more than double the outside temperature, even on mild days. If you must leave your travel buddy unattended for a short time, remove them from the car and ensure they are secured in a safe area with access to water.
Dogs travelling on the back of a ute on hot days are also at risk, as the heat of the tray can burn their footpads or bodies in the sun. Covering the floor of ute trays with a blanket and parking in a shaded area can help reduce the heat risks.

9. Be breed-aware
Be mindful of your dog’s breed. Short-nosed (brachycephalic) breeds, such as bulldogs, boxers, Japanese Chin and Pekingese have a low heat tolerance because they don’t pant as efficiently as longer-nosed dogs.
On warmer days, these breeds should be kept inside with the air-conditioning or fan running.

Short-nosed dog breeds, like bulldogs, have a lower heat tolerance and should stay inside on hot days.

10. Understand signs of heatstroke and dehydration
Dogs suffering from heat stress, like dehydration and heatstroke, generally pant heavily, drool excessively and become restless. Other early-stage symptoms of heat stress include bright red gums and tongue and difficulty maintaining balance. Later-stage signs of heat stress can include staggering, vomiting, diarrhoea or seizures.
If your dog begins to show any of these signs, immediately try to bring their body temperature down at a steady rate by getting them into the shade, spraying cool (rather than ice-cold) water on the dog’s body and using a fan to cool them. Don’t use ice, as it may cool your dog down too rapidly, the RSPCA warns.
A bowl of water alone isn’t always enough to treat heatstroke. Severely-affected dogs need intravenous fluids, medication and oxygen. If your dog presents signs of advanced heatstroke, take them to an emergency vet immediately.
The best heatstroke treatment is prevention.

Follow our 10 tips for keeping dogs cool in summer and limit the time your dog is exposed to the outdoors in hot weather.
We hope that incorporating these tips into your dog’s daily routine will help them to keep cool in the heat and enjoy a happier and safer summer.
Animals don’t have an emotional attachment to their pain like humans do. Consequently, it can be difficult for owners to identify the warning signs of a pet’s decline.

Please keep your dogs safe, some dogs react in fear when exposed to the noise of fireworks. This can result in dogs running away, barking or displaying signs of anxiety.
please keep your pups inside where possible. If you are going out to celebrate consider your pups left home alone, put on some relaxing music to drown out any external sounds. leave them with frozen Kong or lickmat, licking is a natural calming process for dogs. giving them something to focus on that is soothing is a great way to ensure less stress for your pup.

Did you know that dogs can sense storms way before the weatherman or your joints can tell you?
Dogs can sense the changes in the barometric pressure, and may start to pace or pant or go find a 'den' environment to find refuge in. This may be under the bed, in a dark room or in their crate if they have one.
Whatever their safe place is please allow them to find it as long as it is safe. Punishing a pup for being in an area normally out of bounds isn't going to help their anxiety or fear.

Ways you can help!

Be home, reassure your pup that it's okay. Play some soothing music. Put on some Dog TV. Provide your pup with something to lick, a lickmat with their favourite treats or have a Kong frozen and ready to go. Licking is a natural soothing activity for dogs. So why not encourage this.
If you have a thunder shirt put it on them, this is an amazing source of comfort for them.

If you can't be home please ensure your pup is secure. Storms can cause a pup to use their fight or flee natural instinct during a storm. So if you can leave your pup inside or in the garage if possible and again ensure there is a safe place (den) for them to retreat to.

And if by chance your out during or after a storm please keep a close watch for any pups who may have escaped.

Storm time can be a very scary time for dogs.

Today Charming assisted me with a specialists appointment to see my pain Doctor.

He was exceptionally well behaved and waited patiently for me to have my blood taken which then had to be spun to remove the Plasma Rich Platelets that were then returned to my shoulder and forearm to hopefully assist with healing.

While we waited we played a couple of games. "Leave" is one we are working on at the moment and I think leaving a Malakula Farm Beef Crumble treat on his paw and asking him to leave was possibly more painful for him than me having the injections 😂

It's one of his high rewards treats so definitely more tempting that plain kibble.
We then worked on the stairs. He does this at home off leash with no prompting now. But with a busy corner street and lots of distraction it was a very different experience, although I think he did well.

Then to top it off it was an appointment down the Gold Coast, so a couple of hours of travel which he did amazingly and enjoyed the sleep away from the crazy Frenchies he is currently living with.

Oh and I almost forgot to mention we had to use the elevator as well but going up and down he was a little confused as the lift doors open in the opposite direction to where we got in and there was alot of people in there with us, but he sat and waited patiently until the 7th floor; we had to stop a few times to let people off and on. But he sat and waited until I gave him the command to walk with me.

For a 16 week old Border Collie Puppy it's a very good start to his first medical appointment.

Well done Charming your Daddy and Aunty at PAWS for Hope & Understanding INC will be soo proud 💜🐾
