Ask to pat and play🐶

⚠️ 𝗗𝗜𝗗 𝗬𝗢𝗨 𝗔𝗦𝗞 𝗧𝗢 𝗣𝗔𝗧 𝗧𝗛𝗔𝗧 𝗗𝗢𝗚?

👉🏽 I often take my dogs out with me and will tie them out while I grab a coffee or meet with a client etc. Usually my dog will be working on something like abstinence whilst being tied out.

😳 I was absolutely mortified by how many people approached my dog, without asking, without even checking around and proceed to rub my dog’s head or do what their version of a pat is.

➡️ What surprised me even more was a mother and her young baby bent down and were cm’s away from my dogs face!

🚫 Not a single person asked about my dog, if she was comfortable with having strangers bop her on the head, or if they had permission to engage with her.

👉🏽 𝗜𝘀 𝗶𝘁 𝘀𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗺𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝘂𝗽 𝘁𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗵𝘂𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗮𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴?

👉🏽 𝗗𝗼 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗽𝗮𝘁 𝗼𝗿 𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗯𝗼𝗱𝘆 𝗲𝗹𝘀𝗲’𝘀 𝗱𝗼𝗴 𝘂𝗻𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗮𝘀𝗸 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝘀𝗮𝘆 𝗶𝘁’𝘀 𝗼𝗸𝗮𝘆.

🐕 A dog may appear happy and friendly, but has confidence issues with having strangers approach them. Being on lead means they have their flight option removed. So they may show reactivity.

🦮 It could be a dog that is inappropriate at greeting humans and requires a controlled introduction that you have just undone.

✅ Or it may be like my dog, who was specifically training independence and abstinence whilst being tied out.

👉🏽 Always ASK. Accept the answer. Be guided by the person that knows the dog best.
