Understanding Equine Facilitated Learning

How does the horse human relationship tie in with learning.
Horses give us experiential learning, they allow us to interact with nature and they are congruent and authentic. Horses are prey animals so are very sensitive to our energy they test us by using the herd hierarchy to find our boundaries - we need to be congruent, make them feel safe, be a leader and treat them with respect. Their behaviour towards us can revel patterns of incongruency or patterns of behaviour that we are not even aware of.
People learn through relationships, observation and feedback - horses provide these in an authentic way and take us out of our familiar environment, make us vulnerable and encourage us to learn new skills we can take into everyday life.
Equine assisted learning is about students opening up, understanding what is holding them back, building confidence to move forward taking that experiential learning and using it to problem solve in every day life

Lets look today at another aspect of Why Horses Help

The Biophilia hypothesis - what is it?

The Biophilia hypothesis tells us man has a connection with nature that is in our DNA and therefore has a genetic basis. Man's desire to connect with nature can be a positive motivation for change and being with an animal (horse) has a physiological effect on us - our heart beats sync, our breath syncs, and our neurological connections fire at the same rate - all beneficial. Spending time in natural environments is associated with improved mental and spiritual health and for children, being out in nature improves play and physical activity. Our technological society has taken us away from being in nature and therefore been detrimental to our wellbeing as we are hard wired to have this connection and working with a horse provides this - people want to connect and it provides a positive experience.

EQUINE FACILITATED LEARNING

You might ask Why horses?
another aspect:

"Horses are very communicative and expressive, much like people. They display different attitudes and emotions, making them relatable. In the company of people, horses can display happiness, stress, trust, worry and many other moods. With the ability to convey and read emotions, humans can understand horses’ sentiments and horses can understand humans.

Horses’ behaviour towards us can revel patterns of incongruency or patterns of behaviour that we are not even aware of. People learn through relationships, observation, and feedback - horses provide these in an authentic way and take us out of our familiar environment, make us vulnerable and encourage us to learn new skills we can take into everyday life."

EQUINE FACILITATED LEARNING

You might ask Why horses?

over the next few days lets explore this idea and how beneficial it can be

"Horses can help humans improve physically. Horse-riding (for example) is a beneficial form of physical exercise. It is unlike most other types of physical movement for humans because it targets different areas of the body than many other sports or exercises. It can help core and trunk strength, coordination and balance, muscle flexibility and tone, cardiovascular health, and stable strength.

Horses also can help humans emotionally - Some of the most significant emotional benefits humans can gain from horses are learning to slow down and regulate our nervous systems, building confidence and trust, developing our non-verbal and verbal communication skills, and bonding. Creating a bond with a horse is a perfect way to learn how to slow down, open up emotionally, and understand the importance of patience, trust, and communication."

SLOOOOOW DOWN!

SLOW your walking down to 1 step per second with and without your horse next to you.
SLOW your hand movements down as you touch or do things.
SLOW your talking down.
SLOW your breathing down.
SLOW your pulls and pushes down on the leadrope.

SLOW to FLOW!

Humans are WAAAAY to fast for horses and this is one of the leading causes of reactivity and opposition reflex in horses.

Speed = stress.

Let me teach you what speed does...

When the brain perceives a threat, it causes the body to release the stress response hormone cortisol. Cortisol levels and speed go hand in hand.
Cortisol provides the body with the fuel it needs to flee a scary situation or fight against it.

The thing with the mind-body relationship is that the brain feels an emotion such as fear, which create a physical response in the body, but the body can also move at a certain speed or in a particular way and create an emotion in the brain. It can be reverse engineered.

This is how special the intimate relationship is between the brain and body.

The other thing to remember is that, collectively as a social animal, when speed is noticed by another mammal (no matter the species), it alerts the unconscious brain to threat.

Speed is an alarm system in a social system (consciously and unconsciously).

If you walked down a road and everyone started running, you'd find it hard not to run even if you didn't know what the cause was. You are noticing that others are running and in a direction, so you mirror them to increase your chances of survival. You don't need the reasoning part of your brain for this. You just activated your primal (survival) part of the brain.

One other thing to remember: HORSES CAN SMELL CORTISOL. So not only does your speed act as a visual alarm system to your horse, it also acts as an olfactory one!

Would you want to interact with someone who caused you to feel constantly on alert?

These little things are the beginnings of what ripples into chronic stress in both humans and horses.
You spend enough time around someone who is fast in their movement, your nervous system will condition itself to being on high alert.
HELLO 👋 CHRONIC STRESS!!!

Slow your movement down = slow your thoughts down.
Slow your movement down = lower your cortisol.
Slow your movement down = feel connected with yourself, the world and others in it.
Slow your movement down = slow your alarm systems down and eventually they'll turn off.

Slow down so much that it is uncomfortable. It won't be uncomfortable for long, I promise 😉

Happy brain training 🧠
Charlotte 🙂

My passion is horses - learning to ride & improve their well being & way of going under saddle - my background has been wide & varied with instructors from many disciplines teaching me to enhance my ability to work with these incredible creatures & help others improve their knowledge & understanding to allow them to work with their horse as a team.

My belief that the classical principles of dressage have been forgotten & I work to increase my knowledge of the “masters” and allow my horse to be ridden with natural movements that increase their strength & wellness - lightness, softness & self carriage being a priority. Using lateral movements at walk appropriate to each horse to improve straightness & teaching half steps to strengthen the back of the horse along with correct diagonal movements that lead to a relaxed & supple horse :)
