Does my pet have conjunctivitis?

Conjunctivitis is a common form of inflammation or infection found in humans, caused by cold and herpes simplex viruses. However, did you know your dog – and even your cat – can get it too?

Believe it or not, your pet can be just as vulnerable to getting conjunctivitis, or pink eye, as the human members of your family.

It’s important to note that any dog or cat can get conjunctivitis. Breeds with tendencies towards allergies and autoimmune skin conditions are often more susceptible, but it can occur either as a primary cause – such as a bacterial condition, or secondary to eye diseases, trauma, and cancer.

The symptoms of conjunctivitis are quite pronounced. Your pet might be squinting or blinking frequently, have redness in the moist tissues of their eyes, be presenting with discharge or swelling, or have follicles forming in either eye.

Supporting your arthritic pet in winter

Older pets often suffer from arthritis, or degenerative joint disease.

Signs that your dog or cat is experiencing such pain include a limp when rising, reluctance to jump or climb stairs and difficulty using the litter box. Arthritis is often worse during winter, but there are things you can do to keep your pet comfortable when temperatures are low.

Weight management

Check to ensure you are feeding your pet the appropriate amount of food and treats for their life stage and activity level. Maintaining a healthy weight is one of the best ways to reduce the stress on sore joints. If your dog or cat is overweight, reduce portion sizes and replace calorie-laden treats with healthier options such as cooked vegetable. There are prescription diets available that have a specific balance of nutrients to support joints and help with weight loss.

Joint support

One way to ease your pet’s pain is by supporting the production of synovial fluid which cushions and lubricates the joints. There are several brands of dietary supplement that include such ingredients as fish oil, green-lipped mussel extract and glucosamine/chondroitin. These products are simply added to your pet’s food every day.

Hydrotherapy and exercise

Many arthritic animals are reluctant to exercise, yet light movement can be beneficial for increasing circulation and improving muscle tone around arthritic joints. Hydrotherapy, which involves guided exercise on an underwater treadmill or in a warm pool, can relieve pain and pressure while increasing circulation, reducing in?ammation and improving muscle tone. Cats can be gently encouraged to be more active by moving their food bowls around the house so they must walk a little further to eat.

Massage

Another way to increase circulation is through massage. Stroke the affected area while using your thumbs to gently massage tissues surrounding the affected joint. Never apply pressure directly to a bone, joint or other painful region. This not only feels good but will enhance the connection you have with your pet. We are happy to show you some techniques that can help.

Environment

Look at your pet’s environment through their eyes. Which areas of your home could be improved to reduce their difficulties? For instance, place water dishes in each room so that they don’t have far to travel to
have a drink. Consider replacing stairs with a pet-friendly ramp, or removing the sides of your cat’s litter box so they can step in easily.

Medication

Anti-inflammatory medications can make a big difference to your dog or cat’s pain level. Never try to treat their pain at home with human drugs as these may cause serious side effects. Cats are very sensitive to drugs. If you give your pet any natural remedies make sure to let us know so we can avoid any potential drug interactions.

Arthritis is a painful condition for dogs and cats and can adversely affect their quality of life. Together, we can work out a plan to keep your much-loved pet as comfortable as possible.

Meet Astro and Buttercup who are brother and sister and are now 8 weeks old. Astro and Buttercup came to us at 10 days of age after being found by a kind member of the public who brought them to us for help. They have been raised on the bottle by our staff who have dedicated themselves to waking through the night and providing for these 2 special little babies, giving them a second chance at life. Being raised by people, Astro and Buttercup share a special connection with humans.
They have been socialised well with older and younger cats, large dogs, and children. We would love to see them rehomed together as they share a very special bond and will be great entertainment for their new family and each other.
If you think Astro and Buttercup could be a special new addition to your family, please call the clinic on (02) 6772 1686. The adoption price together is $400 total which includes desexing, first vaccinations and microchip for both kittens

Snuggling up for Winter

While winter in Australia can often be milder than in other parts of the world, snowfall and low temperatures are still on their way. While you rug up for the colder weather, how are your cats and dogs keeping warm? Remember, staying warm is equally as crucial for them as it is for you.

Your pets rely on you to provide them with the necessities of life. Food, shelter, and warmth are all vital, and they become all the more critical when the rain and snow start to fall. You can put on a jacket or cuddle up in a blanket, but your dog or cat only has a fur coat that will provide minimal protection against the elements. Therefore, you need to step in and see that they’re sheltered from the weather.

For dogs, there are several things you can be doing to ensure they don’t feel the cold this winter. Firstly, allow them to spend as much time indoors as possible. While they may share ancestry with wolves, the domestic dog’s ears, paws, and nose are particularly vulnerable to cold conditions, and they aren’t able to cope outside for long periods of time in low temperatures.

If your dog is an outside dog, ensure they have enough shelter from the elements. An insulated dog kennel with a well-sealed roof, plenty of blankets and positioned away from the wind and rain can make all the difference.

If you have a small or old dog, purchasing a coat for them to wear during walks, or on short stints outside, can be beneficial as well. Smaller dogs with less fur and older, more fragile dogs could all benefit from an additional layer protecting their bodies.

Additional comfort is also helpful at bedtime. Provide your dog with an elevated bed to prevent being exposed to a draught, as well as plenty of warm blankets so they can sleep comfortably throughout the night.

Cats are less reliant on you as a species, but they too can feel the cold. You might find that your ordinarily active cat is happy to spend more time inside closer to the fire or heater, and is less thrilled at the prospect of heading outside. If this is the case, it could be a good idea to purchase a litter tray to avoid accidents.

However, if your cat still does like to venture outside, it may still try to seek out the warmth. Provide a warm, sheltered spot outdoors so that it won’t find comfort in dangerous areas, such as under vehicles.

The wind, rain, and lower temperatures are on their way, so there’s no time like the present to get prepared. While you’re busy ensuring your family will be warm enough for the next few months, remember to spare a thought for your pets as well. Consult us if you require any advice or tips on how to care for your pets over winter.

Save your puppy from Parvovirus

Canine parvovirus kills thousands of puppies in Australia every year. Are your dogs safe?

Canine parvovirus (CPV), which is more commonly known as β€˜parvo’, is a highly infectious disease with often fatal consequences. It’s a viral illness that impacts a dog’s villous atrophy and intestinal lining and causes vomiting, weight loss, bloody diarrhoea, dehydration and sadly, often death.

In a national survey by the University of Sydney involving over 500 Australian vets, it was found that over 20,000 dogs were diagnosed with CPV each year. Out of those affected, nearly half resulted in death.

The condition affects puppies between the age of six weeks and six months old, and it’s passed on through the faecal matter of dogs that have parvo. Because the bacteria can live in the ground for up to a year, almost any unvaccinated puppy is at risk in an area that has been frequented by dogs within that period.

Parvovirus is a killer, but there is a highly effective vaccination available that can significantly reduce the risk of it affecting your puppy. A vet can administer your dog’s first vaccination at between six and eight weeks old, another at 10-12 weeks, and a final one at 14-16 weeks. Within two weeks of the last parvo vaccination, your puppy will have full immunity.

Technology for canine vaccinations has grown in leaps and bounds in the last four decades, which means that pet owners can have full confidence in their vet to provide preventative measures.

While you wait for your dog to become fully vaccinated by 16 weeks of age, there are also things you can do to reduce your puppy’s risk of catching the viral illness. Limit their exposure to other puppies or unvaccinated dogs, and change your clothing and footwear if you are around other dogs before you head home to your dog. On wellness trips to the vet, carry your puppy in your arms, and on your lap while you wait for your appointment.

Common signs of parvo in young puppies include vomiting, foul-smelling diarrhoea, tiredness, and disinterest in play. If you notice any of these signs, or you have genuine concerns about the illness, seek vet care immediately.

Parvovirus is not a condition to take lightly as it claims thousands of puppies’ lives in Australia every year. If you are thinking about welcoming a new puppy into your home, make an appointment with your vet to get the vaccination process underway. A few quick vet trips could end up saving your dog’s life.

If you’d prefer a pet that didn’t slobber, shed, or eat you out of house and home, then a bird could be the animal for you.

While Australia is very much a country of dog and cat lovers, there is still room for bird lovers who prefer feathered pets to furry ones. Birds have a lot of love to give, while also being more affordable to own, in many cases, than a cat or dog.
