24/06/2024

Chickens have some pretty clever ways of beating the winter chill, but they may still need your help. Like all birds, chickens use their feathers for insulation by fluffing them up and trapping the air. But for the times when nature is hard to predict, good pet care involves providing appropriate refuge.

❄️Insulation❄️
In cold parts of Australia, you could insulate your chicken coop with tree branches, cardboard, or straw. Care should be taken if hay or straw is used for insulation, as these can become infested with mold and vermin and carry chicken parasites. Also, remember to keep the insulation tidy. Keeping the coop clean and dry is essential as most bacteria, fungi, and parasites thrive in warm, moist environments.

β˜€οΈWarmer climatesβ˜€οΈ
If you live in one of the warmer Australian states then you probably won’t need to install insulation in your chicken coop at all. Open, ventilated coops are more important. Learn more tips on coop setup on our website, or alternatively, visit your local Greencross Vets for expert advice.

Winter is here! We feel it's going to be a super cold one, and chances are if you are feeling cold your furry friend is too.

Here are some ways to keep your pet warm in the Winter:

πŸ’šKeep your pet inside
πŸ’šProvide a warm, soft, elevated bed
πŸ’šWarm coats are great for pets that are senior, small or have thin coats
πŸ’šMove your guinea pigs hutch inside the house or garage
πŸ’šProvide extra straw and hay so small pets can burrow and hide
πŸ’šKeep all bedding dry
πŸ’šWrap a loose blanket over your pet, but don’t tuck them in. They still need to be able to move away from it if they overheat
πŸ’šWalk your furry friend during the day when it’s not as cold

🚨 Attention Pet Owners! 🚨

Emergency and Specialty Vets are sounding the alarm about the rise in paralysis ticks affecting our pets. 🐾 With the unseasonal warmth lingering into autumn and rain, the conditions are ripe for these dangerous pests.
At Animal Referral Hospital (ARH) Gosford, several beloved pets have tragically lost their lives due to severe tick paralysis. Dr. Natashia Evans, an Emergency and Critical Care Specialist at ARH Gosford, emphasises the importance of year-round parasite prevention, even as we transition into winter.

Skipping prevention can lead to devastating consequences.
Even a delay of just one or two days can put your pet at risk. Set reminders, and if in doubt, administer prevention a couple of days early.

Pet owners are urged to perform daily tick checks, as early detection can save lives.

For emergency assistance, contact your nearest animal hospital: https://www.emergencyvet.com.au/contact-us.html

22/04/2024

πŸ’š As winter sets in and the temperature drops, vets often see an increase in arthritis cases in both young and old animals. Sadly, the majority of these pets go undiagnosed and untreated as their owners don’t understand the reality of this condition. However, pets experience real pain with arthritis, comparable to the pain experienced by humans with this disease.

πŸ’š Early detection and proactive treatment are essential to ensure your pet’s comfort and quality of life as they age.

πŸ’š If you would like to know more, contact your local Greencross Vets for more information.

This time of year our team (and all vet clinics around the world) receive a higher intake of toxicity cases - especially chocolate & raisins! 🍫🐰

This is a reminder to keep your loved ones safe by making sure all toxic foods are out of reach!
Chocolate is of course unsafe, but also make sure hot crossed buns are kept out of reach as they commonly have chocolate, sultanas or other nasties that can cause serious health problems

Keeping chocolate out of reach not only means our furry friends are safe, but it also means more chocolate for us!

If you're ever concerned about a possible toxicity, call our friendly team on 03 9885 6224
Or if we are closed you can contact the Australian Animal Poisons Hotline for free on 1300 869 738 (1300 TOX PET)
