Welcome Internal Medicine Specialist Dr Louise Lemonnier 👩‍⚕️

Louise is originally from Normandy in France. After obtaining her bachelor’s degree in Biology and Applied Ecology in France, Louise attended the Veterinary School of Budapest in Hungary as part of an English-speaking international program. 📚

Having ridden and competed on sport horses for most of her life, equine practice was the natural choice, and upon graduation, she went back to France to complete a rotating internship in one of the biggest private equine hospitals in Normandy (Centre Hospitalier Veterinaire Equin de Livet). After two years working as an equine ambulatory vet in Brittany, her growing interest for internal medicine and critical care took her on new adventures, first at the Camden Equine Centre in Sydney as part of the medicine team, then at the Hagyard Equine Medical Institute in Lexington for a 6-month Fellowship in internal medicine. These experiences allowed her to strengthen her passion for and skills in neonatal critical care and management of peripartum emergencies. 🩺

Louise then completed her residency in equine internal medicine at Nantes University, successfully passed her board exam, and became a diplomate of the European College of Equine Internal Medicine in February 2023, while working as a senior clinician in internal medicine in Nantes. 💻

Hungry for new adventures and new experiences, Louise worked at Veterinary Associates Equine in New Zealand as a Clinician in Internal Medicine, before joining AEH. She has an interest in all aspects of internal medicine, with a strong interest for critical care, neonatology, and cardiology. 🏥

We are excited to have Louise a part of our team!

We are excited to be able to offer our clients and referring vets as a service - a Dynamic Respiratory Scope (DRS).🐴🏇

The DRS provides a stable and clear image and is the first of its particular kind within Australia.

Intermittent dorsal displacement of the soft palate (DDSP) is an example of a dynamic airway condition that can be accurately diagnosed with exercising endoscopy. This occurs when the soft palate billows up over the top of the epiglottis (leaf shape cartilage at the bottom of the larynx). By displacing, the palate partially blocks the airway which can lead to a sudden drop in performance.

It can be hard to diagnose as usually it only occurs when the horse is under pressure (ie at the end of a race). Exercising endoscopy is considered to be the gold standard for diagnosing problems such as DDSP.

Avenel Equine Hospital is now proudly able to offer Dynamic Respiratory Scopes (DRS) as a service.🩺

Our new VideoMed Overground Scope © provides a stable and clear image and is the first of its particular kind within Australia. DRS is often plagued by image instability and movement of the scope picture whilst the horse is working. This new system is a significant upgrade from many of its older counterparts.

A testament from a leading equine racetrack veterinarian and valued referring clinician:
“That’s an amazing image. Best image I have seen on a DRS.”

The DRS is easily mounted in front of the saddle and the lightweight bridle components incorporating carbon fibre are exceptionally well tolerated. Handheld monitors allow for optimal positioning of the scope to provide the best possible image.🏇🐴🤩

In one study investigating DRS, over 80% of horses were found to have a dynamic upper airway obstruction, of which only 50% were found to have abnormalities at rest. 80% of these horses with dynamic upper airway obstruction produced abnormal respiratory noise whilst exercising. Additionally, 71% of horses with dynamic upper airway obstruction had more than one abnormality that would not have been identified by resting scope. These pathologies include arytenoid cartilage collapse (Roarer), dorsal displacement of the soft palate (DDSP), axial deviation of the aryepiglottic folds and many others.

Accurate diagnosis is paramount to correct treatment of any disease. This new DRS gives our team the best means of investigating and treating your horse.

If your horse is not performing as expected or is producing noise at work, an upper respiratory tract issue may be at fault. Contact us and arrange an appointment today. ☎️ (03) 5796 2468

🏥

Billy recently presented to Avenel Equine Hospital for evaluation of colic signs which weren’t responding to treatment at home. 🩺

Large colon displacement was diagnosed at AEH and he received intensive medical treatment including regular oral fluids via stomach tube and regular exercise and feed restriction. He responded well to 2 days of treatment and his displacement and colic resolved. His whole family was very relieved. 🙌

Billy is a very special horse and has been quite a super star, winning and placing in multiple rodeos, even winning his junior jockey a car in 2016. 🏆🚗

All the best Billy, we wish you a lovely time out in the pasture back home! 🐎

We loved having Swampy in our hospital recently. 🐎

Avenel Equine Hospital
Swampy had an operation to help in the attempt to help correct his knee. I cannot speak more highly of Avenel Equine Hospital. From the time we arrived to the next day I picked up Swampy, they were so accommodating.
They were all so professional, diligent and friendly. All horses seemed to be treated the same no matter their breed, size or price tag.
The facilities were mind blowing and so was the opportunity to watch the surgery take place.
Thank you Dr Angus Adkins, Dr Kirstie Hobson and Sarah Eastgate and everyone else. Your help was most appreciated.

Our Story

Avenel Equine Hospital is the new name for our practice that has emerged from the amalgamation of Terry Lowis’ long standing ‘Stud & Stable Veterinarians’ with ‘Scone Equine Group’ in 2014. The practice offers a comprehensive ambulatory service to equine clients in the local area (Avenel, Nagambie, Seymour and Euroa) as well as intensive care and surgical services at our new purpose built hospital.

Our involvement with Scone Equine Group gives us enormous support and allows our veterinarians to call on specialist expertise and use resources from the largest equine veterinary operation in the southern hemisphere.
