This RSPCA WA post is a good excuse to talk about responsible pet ownership. Before bringing home any furry friend, whether it's a Frenchie or another breed, please do your homework! Make sure you're supporting ethical breeding practices and avoiding puppy farming which breed purely for money (a Frenchie pup costs $1000s). And don’t buy them “because I couldn’t bear to leave him/her there” - that’s encouraging them not stopping them - report them please! 🚫

Frenchies, adorable as they are, often suffer from serious health issues due to conformational deformities. From respiratory to spinal and reproductive issues, these pups deserve better. 💔

Opt for adoption from a rescue centre or purchase only from reputable, registered breeders who prioritize the health and well-being of their animals. Together, let's make sure every pet finds a loving home and lives a happy, healthy life! 🏡❤️

As we at Warnbro Veterinary Hospital get our Flu vaccines ahead of the winter season, here’s a reminder to check your pet is up to date with their annual vaccinations!

Just like us, our pets need regular vaccinations to protect them from serious illnesses and diseases - not just their primary puppy or kitten courses. For dogs these are parvovirus, canine distemper, hepatitis, (every three years) and parainfluenza and bordertella bronchiseptica every year (the latter are two potential causes of kennel cough).

For cats the core vaccinations are for feline flu (caused by rhinotraceitis and calicivirus) and feline infectious enteritis (caused by panleukopaenia virus/ feline parvovirus). Our feline leukaemia and feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) vaccinations as recommended for outdoor cats are still unavailable Worldwide.

If you are unsure what vaccinations your pet has had or is due, give us a call today and we can check their medical records and advise.

Let's keep those tails wagging and those purrs going strong! 🐶😺

Here’s one of our rescue kittens Monty having his second F3 kitten vaccination. He was a brave soldier!

🐾 Planning a getaway with your furry friend? 🚗 😎

As the winter sets in, some of our lucky clients migrate to warmer parts of WA with their pets. However, these areas may harbor mosquitoes carrying heartworm and ticks that may transmit ehrlichia - things we don’t have to worry about here in Warnbro. Before you go, book a pre-travel health check for your pet so we can make sure they’re fit for the journey and to discuss ways to help prevent infection.

❤️ Heartworm Disease in Dogs:
Heartworm disease is a serious and potentially fatal condition caused by parasitic worms living in the heart, lungs, and blood vessels of affected pets. Clinical signs may include coughing, lethargy, difficulty breathing, and weight loss. Prevention is key, so let's discuss the best prevention methods for your furry companion.

🦠 Clinical Signs of Erhlichiosis:
Erhlichiosis is a tick-borne disease caused by the bacteria Ehrlichia. Clinical signs can vary but may include fever, lethargy, loss of appetite, joint pain, and swollen lymph nodes. Early detection and treatment are crucial for a successful outcome.

🐾 Traveling with Pets: Tips for a Stress-Free Journey with Your Furry Companion:

1. Plan Ahead: Research pet-friendly accommodations, transport options, and any necessary documentation well in advance to avoid last-minute stress. Check their vaccinations are up to date and ensure you know what parasite prevention is necessary. Ensure you have sufficient if any longterm medications your pet takes and if you know you are going to be far from veterinary attention, make up or buy a pet first aid kit
2. Comfort First: Make sure your pet's carrier or travel crate is comfortable and familiar to them. Pack their favorite toys, blankets, and snacks to help them feel at ease during the journey.
3. Practice Makes Perfect: If your pet isn't accustomed to traveling, take short practice trips beforehand to acclimate them to the experience and reduce anxiety. If they are very anxious or travel-sick discuss with your vet what medications might help well in advance of your trip.
4. Stay Safe: Secure your pet with a harness or carrier in the car to prevent injury in case of sudden stops or accidents. Never leave them unattended in a parked vehicle, especially in hot weather.
5. Hydration and Nutrition: Keep your pet hydrated during the journey by providing plenty of fresh water, and stick to their regular feeding schedule to avoid upset stomachs.
6. Bathroom Breaks: Schedule regular stops for bathroom breaks and exercise to allow your pet to stretch their legs and relieve themselves.
7. Comfort Stops: Take breaks to reassure and comfort your pet, offering them affection and attention to help alleviate any travel-related stress.
8. Identification: Ensure your pet’s microchip details are up to date and that they wear a collar with up-to-date ID tags, including your contact information, in case they get lost during the journey.

By following these tips, you can help make traveling with your furry friend a breeze, ensuring a stress-free and enjoyable journey for both of you!

🐾 Is your beloved furry friend entering their golden years? It's time to focus on Senior Pet Wellness! 🐾

As our pets age, their needs change, and they may require extra care and attention to maintain their health and happiness. Here are some essential tips to support your aging companion:

Regular Veterinary Checkups: Schedule routine wellness exams to monitor your senior pet's health. Early detection of age-related issues can lead to better outcomes and improved quality of life.

Nutrition: Adjust your pet's diet to meet their changing nutritional needs. Senior pets may benefit from specially formulated senior diets that support joint health, digestion, and weight management.

Exercise: Keep your senior pet active with gentle exercise tailored to their abilities. Regular movement helps maintain muscle strength, joint flexibility, and mental stimulation.

Dental Care: Dental health is crucial for pets of all ages, but it becomes even more important as they age. Schedule regular dental cleanings and provide dental chews or toys to promote oral hygiene.

Comfortable Environment: Make adjustments to your home to accommodate your senior pet's changing needs. Provide soft bedding, non-slip surfaces, and easy access to food, water, and litter boxes.

Pain Management: Monitor your pet for signs of pain or discomfort, such as limping, stiffness, or changes in behavior. Work with our veterinary team to develop a pain management plan tailored to your pet's individual needs.

Quality Time: Spend quality time with your senior pet, engaging in activities they enjoy and providing plenty of love and attention. Your companionship is essential for their emotional well-being.

At Warnbro Veterinary Hospital, we're dedicated to helping senior pets thrive in their golden years. Contact us today to schedule a senior wellness exam and discuss how we can support your aging companion. 🐾💙

🦷 Dental Health 🦷

Did you know that dental health is just as important for pets as it is for humans? Poor oral hygiene can lead to serious health issues for your furry friend, including gum disease and tooth decay. Here are some tips to keep your pet's teeth clean and healthy:

Regular Brushing: Just like us, pets need their teeth brushed regularly. Use a soft child’s brush from supermarket to start - it doesn’t have to be expensive … you can progress to the pet-specific toothbrushes and toothpaste to gently clean their teeth and gums later. Start slow and make it a positive experience for your pet. Book an appointment with one of our vet nurses for a demonstration if you are unsure.

Dental Chews and Toys: Provide dental chews and toys designed to promote oral health. Chewing helps remove plaque and tartar buildup, keeping your pet's teeth clean between brushings.

Healthy Diet: Feed your pet a balanced diet that supports dental health. Look for foods and treats formulated to promote dental hygiene, such as those with added enzymes or abrasives or add in products such as “Simply Seaweed” which you can purchase from our reception.

Routine Checkups: Our team of wonderful qualified Veterinary Nurses offer free dental checks. They can assess your pet's oral health and recommend professional cleanings as needed to prevent dental problems.

Watch for Signs: Keep an eye out for signs of dental issues, including bad breath, swollen gums, loose teeth, or reluctance to eat. If you notice any of these signs, don't hesitate to contact us for an evaluation.

Remember, a healthy mouth is essential for your pet's overall well-being. Let's work together to keep those pearly whites shining bright! 😁🐾

25/03/2024

Heartworm is incredibly rare in Perth Metro area - none of our vets or nurses have known of a case in their time working locally and for the 10 + years he’s been blood testing dogs as part of the requirements for them travelling overseas, Dr Angus has not had a positive result. On the Heartworm surveillance project, there are only 5 confirmed cases in the last 10 years.

HOWEVER, this week a dog with no travel history was confirmed positive for heartworm at an Osbourne Park Vet Hospital - reminding us not to be complacent - rare is not impossible.

If your dog is not up to date with heartworm prevention, book an appointment with one of our lovely vets for a health check and advice.

Most monthly flea/ tick/ worm treatments cover heartworm. If travelling north then you must protect against heartworm and ticks (for a bacteria causing the disease Erhliciosis).
For those not travelling or on monthly preventatives there is a convenient annual injection to protect against Heartworm.

❤️ADOPTED❤️

Gorgeous Polly is ready to find her first home!

She came to us as a stray baby with babies of her own. She’s now been desexed, and is looking for someone to make up for the childhood she missed.
Polly loves attention, accepting all the pets that are on offer.

As you can see, Polly’s upper canine falls within the lower canine, rather than outside of it; giving her signature derpy lip.
So far it’s not showing any health issues or seeming to bother her; but if it needs to be dealt with in the future, we will do so.

Polly is out at foster, so if you’d like to meet her, please call reception on 9593 1797, so we can arrange a visit.
