With spring in the air Cloud took some time out of her busy day putting her best hoof forward to get some happy snaps with a few of the equine team. Cloud is a valuable team member and loves the attention ❤️
Bloom is a 9yo Standardbred mare. She is Baldivis Vet Hospital’s most important horse as she is our blood and plasma donor.
Horses have seven different blood types; A, C, D, K, P, Q and U. The two most important blood groups are Aa and Qa.
The ideal blood donor (like our wonderful Bloom) does not have either of these two major blood groups so that the recipient is unlikely to develop a transfusion reaction, Bloom is classed as Aa and Qa negative.
Plasma is blood with all the red blood cells removed, it contains important antibodies and a variety of important protein factors that contribute in various ways to help keep our patients healthy and their immune system strong.
A plasma transfusion may be needed in new born foals if they did not drink the colostrum from their mum within the first few hours of life. We recommend an IgG test when the foal is about 24 hours old which measures the level of antibodies in the foals system. If the IgG test is below a certain level we administer a plasma transfusion to ensure the foal has an adequate level of antibodies to fight off any infections that could make them very sick.
Bloom has helped keep many foals healthy and strong in her time as Baldivis Vet Hospital’s blood donor.
Thanks Bloom!
