Congratulations to our Out and About Scholar Graduates Lola and Hazel.

An excitable duo, very friendly and happy, we spent our time practicing loose lead walking (with incredible success - very proud dog trainer over here! 🥹), settling on a mat, calmness around each other, polite greetings with people (and resisting the urge to jump!) and checking in as a default behaviour.

As an excitable teenager, and pre-teen, both of these dogs did exceptionally well. You'd think the best part of this course is settling for a coffee at the cafe - but it is in fact seeing huge success in these dogs with such dedicated families. The time at the cafe is a bonus.

Happy training, we know you're going to go far ❤️

Look at these GORGEOUS pups - Dukie, Sora and Lexi - our recent Social Scholar Graduates. Congratulations 🎊 👏 🥳

Sometimes the biggest challenge with having a dog, is their social etiquette around other dogs; sometimes too overzealous and friendly, sometimes wary and unsure. This trio practiced calmness (and confidence) in the presence of each other as well as unknown dogs on our field trip. Putting their skills into practice allowed them to focus on their people in the presence of other dogs, say hello to unknown dogs when appropriate and learn to keep distance or avoid when the time isn't right.

If your dog needs a helping hand with some on lead social skills, come join us at the end of September for our next 3-week course to learn more about dog body language, how to keep your dog calm, and what it means to be a Social Scholar.

Congratulations to our recent Adventure Scholar Graduates; Rosie, Evie and Dusty!

Learning to come back to your people can be a challenge for dogs when the option of freedom is on the cards, or food wrappers, birds, people or other dogs. This trio practiced skills ranging from calmness around distractions, focus on their people, settling on a mat (for those nights sitting by the campfire) and of course coming when called. Each dog was at a different level of success when we began and each dog improved greatly in many different areas.

With continued practice and positive reinforcement we just know these dogs will be enjoying off lead adventures for a lifetime. ❤️

Do you wish your dog could go everywhere with you? Well these superstars are well on their way. Congratulations to Billie and Lexi, who worked hard practicing their loose lead walking skills over a few weeks before graduating and heading into the real world.

We also worked on focus around distractions, calmness around each other, settling on a bed, and not picking items up off the ground - all great prep for a morning walk to the dog friendly Balhannah Hotel for a morning coffee together in the garden. Is there a better way to spend a sunny winters morning?

If you want your canine companion to be able to walk with you through the main street, markets or to the cafe, join us in September for our next Out and About Scholar Course. www.scholarsincollars.com.au

Congratulations to our recent Social Scholar graduates; Tilly, Milo and Diesel (and Bobby). This group of young dogs had a range of social skills and emotions about meeting other dogs, from very happy and friendly, to feeling unsure in close proximity, to feeling really worried and unsure.

After two weeks in the classroom we headed out into public to practice our learnt skills on our field trip - with amazing success! We practicied distance, calmness, focus, and meeting and greeting appropriate dogs. It was an amazing morning together.

Well done to this young group, continue to practice as these dogs head into adolescence and adulthood and your Social Scholar will be the talk of the town.

If your dog needs to learn calmness or confidence (or anything in between), join us for our next Social Scholar course by visiting www.scholarsincollars.com.au

After only 2 weeks we headed out on our Adventure Scholar field trip - and look at these fabulous recalls!!

Maisie and Poppy had such super recalls we could drop the lead, or go off lead in a brand new environment! Both of these dogs are going to be holiday Adventure dogs with their families, so we also practiced calmness around distractions for those times they're off in the caravan, or visiting Air BnB's.

Great work to Poppy and Maisie and their families. Keep up the training through adolescence and you'll be enjoying Adventures together for years to come.

To be as amazing as these pups, visit www.scholarsincollars.com.au to register for our next Adventure Scholar Course.

"STOP!!" / "NO!!" / "DON'T CHASE THAT!" / "OR THA---" / "COME BAAAAACK!!!"

If this sounds familiar, it's probably time to change tactic. If what you've been doing isn't working, let us help.

Our UnChase! training can help you with understanding your dog's behaviour, and ways to change it with long term results. It won't be an overnight fix but with some added management and ongoing training your dog can learn to be around their triggers without the desire to chase. It may sound impossible but we promise, it isn't.

Whether it be cats, chickens, livestock, other dogs, ducks, cars, cyclists, children, kangaroos, possums etc etc - we can help provide training that will ensure your life can be less stressful when your dog encounters their trigger.

It was a cold and foggy morning in Hahndorf yesterday morning, but that didn’t stop Coco, Fitz, Jones, Miko, Summer and their families from attending Puppy Promenade.

Under the guidance of one of our qualified instructors, the puppies and their families explored the Main Street of Hahndorf. We guarantee small class sizes to ensure that you and your puppy get the best from your time with us.

There’s so many benefits to getting your puppy out in the big wide world, but it’s important to do so safely and positively.

Keep up the great work everyone! 🤩

You won’t recognise these dogs on the block with their much improved loose lead walking skills! 😏

We were lucky enough to be joined last night by Banjo, Ziggy, Lexi and their humans for our Walk This Way Workshop at the Mt Barker Pet Care Centre. The Walk This Way Workshop focuses on teaching skills and strategies to ensure that dogs and their families can enjoy their walks.

The benefit of attending our workshops and classes? We get out and about in the real world to practice with those real life distractions! For last nights class, this meant starting out inside the Mt Barker Pet Care Centre before heading out onto the Main Street in Mt Barker for some practice around distractions.

We also cap our class sizes to ensure you and your dog get the attention and support that you deserve. We cap our class numbers to three at our Mt Barker location to ensure each dog has plenty of space to work in.

What was your dog was bred to do? 🥸

What was your dog was bred to do? 🥸

Looking back at the history of our dogs, many breeds were deliberately devloped by humans to carry out specific jobs. This was done by selecting the dogs who had the right traits and were the best at those jobs to breed together.

Due to this, over time, the result was breeds of dogs who all tend to have these particular traits. In the times when dogs were needed to carry out these jobs this was ideal, and they would spend their working day doing the very things they had been bred to do.

Fast forward a few hundred years and, while there are still working dogs today, the proportion of dogs working at the role for which their breed was developed is much lower. A great many of these dogs from working breeds are now in companion roles. (In my case, I started out working sheepdogs on the farm and, although we are no longer on the farm, the Border Collies remain).

The fact of no longer performing their roles does not mean that those traits have gone away. A terrier is still likely to dig. A scent hound will follow their nose. Retrievers want to carry things around in their mouths. A herding dog will often find something to herd - possibly the kids in the home.

When we look to find a dog to join our family, it is vital that we think about their history and whether our home can honestly provide the things they need. If not, a different breed or type of dog would be a better choice for all concerned. If we think we can, then it's time to think about exactly how we are going to meet those needs.

When we bring these dogs with history in specific roles into our homes it's so important to think about the breed and what they might need. Find ways for them to carry out these behaviours that for many generations they have been bred to carry out.

Give your terrier a digging spot - either a patch of garden where they are allowed to dig, or a sand pit.

Find out about scentwork for your scenthound - mantrailing is a popular pastime where dogs learn to follow scent trails and find people.

Let your retrievers have something to carry to greet visitors or returning family at the door, and maybe look at finding some activities involving retrieving for them to do. Avoid lots of repetitive ball throwing for fetch as this can cause issues with joints. Instead look at maybe getting some of the gundog training dummies and doing a few gentle tosses with those or asking your dog to wait while you throw. You can also hide the dummies and send your dog to find them.

Herding games can be fantastic for herding dogs. Look at Kay Laurence's Sheepballs, or Treibball, both of which involve balls to let those herding moves and instincts be used (links to both in the comments). Think about finding games that involve them following and controlling movement such as a flirt pole - a stick with some cord attached and a lure or toy attached. These can be bought from a store or made at home.

For every type of dog there are activities and games that are breed-appropriate and will let them do those things humans have bred them to do. Take some time to find out about the history of the breed (or breeds) of your dog and find these activities that are designed for them and their traits - you will both be happier for it!

Introducing Betty and Odie - our newest Out and About Scholar graduates! 🎓

We’ve covered a lot of ground over the past four weeks, including loose lead walking, calmness in the big wide world and strategies for ensuring every outing is a success.

In the final week, we took a field trip to The Olive Branch Balhannah to put our team’s skills to the test.

We practiced our loose lead walking on our way to and from the cafe and once we arrived we implemented strategies to help our dogs settle in a new environment and discussed ways to ensure these outings are a success.

⭐️ We highly recommend The Olive Branch if you need a hot coffee before or after class; the staff are lovely and the coffee is great!

🎓 Our latest Social Scholars graduates were out and about in Balhannah yesterday morning putting their newly learned skills into practice in the real wide world.

We started off in the park before making our way down the street towards the Balhannah Dog Park. The dog park in particular was extremely busy with lots of people coming and going. Our class were able to set up just outside the entrance and watch all of the dogs and their people come and go, in a safe manner.

This field trip provided the perfect opportunity for the dogs and their families to put into practice the things that they had learnt over the course in a real life setting, but still receive guidance and support from our qualified instructors.

Fantastic work Roxy, Sully, Zorro, Franklin, Tully and their humans! 🤩
