Bees loaded and heading home. The shortest almond pollination contract we've had. Almonds already developing on trees and leaves fully formed already.

Heading north to Mildura to collect our bees after this years almond pollination. Another few hours to drive yet. Quite a short season this year due to weather conditions. A sunny 22 degrees in Tempy. Plenty of grain trucks on the move up this way.

Things don't always run smoothly moving bees at night. We had a tyre blow out on the bee trailer on the Calder Hwy just out of Ouyen. Mechanical issues always add a level of stress when you have hives loaded. The bees were also a little defensive from being on canola and with some unsettled weather. Met an awesome bloke in Ouyen who had what we needed for the tyre replacement.

Earlier this year HiveMind Community Apiary Ballarat received funding from Australia Post to deliver sessions for local budding young beekeepers.

We are currently taking expressions of interest from young people aged 10 - 18 yrs to participate in the range of open hive experiences and mentoring at the HiveMind Community Apiary during Spring and summer.

Sessions will be held on Sunday afternoons between 2pm-4pm. *Please note, children aged 10 -12years must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

As beekeepers, winter is the perfect time to get your regular CPR and First Aid training up to date. Being across current first aid for anaphylaxis and potential issues occurring from working in remote locations is super important.

3am start this morning to move a load of bees to the Mallee in readiness for almond pollination next month. Hives unloaded, water and pollen supplement set up. Time to head home for a nap after a long drive.

📣 BEEKEEPING COURSES. We've been getting quite a few enquiries of late about folks wanting to start beekeeping. As a largely spring and summer pursuit, we don't offer courses during winter (its just too cold for our beautiful 🐝), but we are in the process of developing our Introduction to Beekeeping course dates for Spring 2025, so watch this space!

Just completed National AgVet Chemical Training at TAFE. Provided an excellent understanding of chemical drift, sensitive uses and impacts on livestock, including honeybees used for pollination services. Valuable knowledge and understanding gained as we consider future treatments and impacts managing Varroa destructor. Plus, in case I need to know, I can also now manually calibrate a boom sprayer!

Deep into Cert 3 in Horticulture now. Term 2 and Chemicals and Safe Chemical Transportation part of the program. Relieved to see 'bees' being considered as part of the livestock impacts of agricultural and horticultural chemical usage. Now for some greater rigor in monitoring and compliance when it comes to usage and spray drift during almond pollination.

The mighty Murray River at Redcliff in the Victoria NSW border.

Busy backyard bees on the gorgeous happy wanderer. Honeybees thrive in established urban environments where forage us plentiful throughout the year. 🐝

Bees on the move, loading hives before heading home. Ezyloader makes moving hives so much easier (and safer). 🏗

Spring is here (a little early according to the calendar). Sweet little bee foraging on backyard blossom for nectar and pollen.

Unloading hives at first drop point after a challenging overnight trip. Had to change a shredded trailer tyre with bees on board. 🐝

Last load of bees moved into the Mallee ready for almond pollination in August. A warmer and drier location for the bees. The Ezyloader crane makes such a huge difference in reducing loading and unloading time and eliminating our biggest injury risk - manual handling. A quick sausage roll and coffee from the fab Ouyen Bakery before heading home.

Great honey tasting session at Sovereign Hill this morning, stepping honey lovers through the finer points of the delicious honey varieties we have for sale.
