To the vets and nurses at the Ballarat Veterinary Practice, our pets are members of the family and it’s important to us that they stay healthy and happy. Similarly, we understand that your animals are much loved members of your family and it is our aim to see them only once a year for their annual health check and take pleasure in giving them a clean bill of health. To this end, we only stock our

practice with the safest and most effective healthcare products, and the highest quality diets. Family members do fall ill though, and they suffer injuries which can be life-threatening. In situations like these, we treat each patient with the same high level of compassion, understanding, empathy and professionalism to quickly relieve pain and suffering, diagnose, and treat, while maintaining good communication with you throughout the process. We are constantly updating our equipment, techniques and building on our combined 70 years of experience in companion animal medicine and surgery. We welcome you and your pets to our practice and hope to see you soon.

❓How often do you brush your teeth?

Imagine the consequences if, instead of brushing, you relied solely on a once-a-year visit to the dentist to keep your teeth healthy! 😱

👉 The same principle applies to our pets!

Alongside regular dental check-ups, you can support your pet’s dental health with:

- Routine brushing,
- Applying antiplaque or antiseptic solutions to the teeth
- Using dental chews
- Choosing dental-friendly diets, and
- Using special water additives

✅ Because the best pet dental care is performed daily at home!

Do you have any questions? We are here to help!

Recently, Jax came in for a skin irritation, but he ended up stealing all our hearts instead!

After a thorough check-up, we made sure to pamper him a bit.
Of course, we couldn’t resist snapping a few adorable photos. 📸❤️

We loved seeing you in the clinic, Jax! 🐶✨

🎃🐾 **Happy Halloween from Ballarat Vet Practice!** 🎃🐾

Halloween has become increasingly popular in Australia in recent years. If you’re celebrating, please be mindful of your pets and chocolate! 🍫👻

Chocolate can be toxic to pets, leading to serious health issues such as vomiting, diarrhoea, and even more severe complications. Remember, dark chocolate and baking chocolate are especially dangerous!

Here are some tips to keep your furry friends safe this Halloween:

- **Keep candy out of reach**: Store chocolate and candy in high places where pets can’t access them.
- **Educate guests**: Inform visitors not to share their treats with your pets.
- **Offer pet-friendly treats**: Provide special Halloween snacks made just for them!

If you suspect your pet has eaten chocolate, contact your veterinarian immediately.

Let’s ensure this Halloween is fun and safe for all our furry companions! 🐶❤️🐱

If your pet happens to get into chocolate, here’s a handy calculator to help you determine if they need to seek veterinary attention,

❓How often should you give your dogs bones?

🙋‍♀️ Never!

🦴 Regular bone chewing can wear down a dog’s teeth, making them more vulnerable to damage over time. Unfortunately, because bones are much harder than a dog’s teeth, bones can also cause fractured or damaged teeth.

🦴 Fractured teeth are painful and prone to infection. This results in tooth loss or expensive dental treatment.

🦴 Additionally, bones can splinter and cause trauma to the soft tissues of the mouth and digestive tract and can increase the risk of salmonella poisoning.

✅ So please don’t give your dogs bones!

Pain Management.

Anyone who has had an orthopaedic procedure knows that good pain management is crucial.

Prior to performing a TPLO on patients with a ruptured cranial cruciate ligament, Dr Greedy places an ultrasound guided nerve block. Local anaesthetic is used to manage pain by temporarily numbing specific nerves in the leg.

This provides effective pain relief during and after surgery and results in a smoother anaesthetic and better posture op recovery for our patients. ✅

Each month, we’re pleased to welcome Dr. Richard Wooley and his nurse Brooke from Cardio Respiratory Pet Referrals for consultations. 🩺

Recently, one of our patients, Goose, came in for a routine check-up with Dr. Lynda Kitchin, who discovered a grade 2 heart murmur.

Goose was referred to Dr. Wooley, who performed an echocardiogram revealing early signs of hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy (HOCM) with moderate to severe left ventricular outflow tract obstruction (LVOTO) and mild trace mitral regurgitation.

The great news? Goose isn’t showing any clinical signs and doesn’t need any medications at this stage! His owner, Emma, will monitor him at home, and he’ll return for a follow-up with Dr. Wooley in 12 months. ❤️

This case highlights the importance of regular check-ups for your pets. Keeping them healthy starts with staying informed! If you have any questions about your pet’s health, don’t hesitate to call one of our clinics!

(All of Dr. Richard Wooley's appointments are made through Cardio Respiratory Pet Referrals and not through Ballarat Vet Practice.)

🐈 Because cats need regular dental care too!

Dr Aaron Luttrell performed a routine dental examination on young Beatrix recently.

Radiographs were taken to ensure the teeth above (crowns) and below (roots) the gumline are healthy and then the teeth were scaled to remove tartar.

‘Cat breath’ be gone!

Throughout the procedure, Dr Luttrell discussed his findings with wonderful final year Melbourne University Veterinary student Tim.

(Best wishes for your final exams Tim!)

Which means fledglings are making their appearance.
We are seeing a number of fledglings across all our clinics.

Do you know what to do if you encounter a fledgling?
This flowchart from Wildlife Victoria is handy to refer to.

In the comments, we will provide more information about what you can do to help, along with links to some useful websites.

As always, feel free to call your local clinic for advice as well!
