This handsome Maltese cross, Archie, is such a sweet little man. Like many pets, he needs a little help with his a**l glands from time to time. 🐕💩

For those who aren’t familiar, a**l glands are small sacs near your pet’s bottom that can sometimes become too full or clogged, causing discomfort. When Archie visits us for his regular a**l gland expression, we ensure he stays comfy and happy! 😌

It’s a quick, routine procedure that helps prevent issues like scooting or excessive licking. We’re always thrilled to have Archie in for his check-ups and are here to help keep all our furry friends feeling their best.

At Ballarat Veterinary Practice, we have a blood bank of dogs who are always on call to help save lives. Our donor dogs are carefully selected, typed, and must meet specific criteria to ensure the best possible match for those in need.

Monty’s donation is a perfect example of the amazing work these life-saving heroes do, and we’re so proud of him and all our donor dogs who make a difference!

As the weather warms up, snakes become more active, putting our pets at risk. Here’s how you can keep your furry friends safe:

-Be Aware of Their Surroundings: Keep pets on a leash and avoid tall grass, rocks, or wooded areas where snakes may hide.
-Supervise Outdoor Play: Always keep an eye on your pets while they’re outside, especially during snake season.
-Keep Grass Short & Gardens Tidy: Snakes love to hide in overgrown grass and cluttered gardens. Trim your grass and clear away any debris.
-Block Holes: Seal any gaps or holes around your home that snakes could use to enter.
-Use Rat- and Snake-Proof Structures: If you have chickens or compost bins, make sure they’re snake-proof to prevent attracting them.
-Create a Safe Space: On rural properties, use snake-proof house-yards or dog runs, or keep pets indoors when you can’t supervise.
-If Your Pet is Bitten (or You Suspect a Bite): Stay calm and seek immediate veterinary care—every second counts!

It’s starting to heat up out there! Make sure you keep your dog happy and comfortable so they can fully enjoy the warmer weather. 🌞🐶

Here are a few simple tips to help your dog beat the heat:
💦 Plenty of water – Keep your dog hydrated, especially during walks or playtime.
🌅 Avoid peak heat – Take walks early in the morning or later in the evening when it’s cooler.
🌳 Shady spots – Make sure your dog has a cool, shaded area to rest if they’re outside.
🔥 No hot pavements – Test the pavement with your hand; if it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for their paws! 🐾
🍦 Pupsicles – Freeze your dog’s favourite treats in a Kong or similar toy for a refreshing, cool snack.

Halloween has become increasingly popular in Australia in recent years. If you’re celebrating, please be mindful of your pets and chocolate! 🍫👻

Chocolate can be toxic to pets, leading to serious health issues such as vomiting, diarrhoea, and even more severe complications. Remember, dark chocolate and baking chocolate are especially dangerous!

Here are some tips to keep your furry friends safe this Halloween:

- **Keep candy out of reach**: Store chocolate and candy in high places where pets can’t access them.
- **Educate guests**: Inform visitors not to share their treats with your pets.
- **Offer pet-friendly treats**: Provide special Halloween snacks made just for them!

If you suspect your pet has eaten chocolate, contact your veterinarian immediately.

🏉 Footballers are not the only ones to ‘do a cruciate!’ This beautiful, brave boy had a ruptured cranial cruciate ligament in his left stifle (knee). Under the expert care of Dr Stewart Greedy, ‘Kipper’ had a knee reconstruction known as a Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy or TPLO.
