To the vets and nurses at the Ballarat Veterinary Practice, our pets are members of the family and it’s important to us that they stay healthy and happy. Similarly, we understand that your animals are much loved members of your family and it is our aim to see them only once a year for their annual health check and take pleasure in giving them a clean bill of health. To this end, we only stock our

practice with the safest and most effective healthcare products, and the highest quality diets. Family members do fall ill though, and they suffer injuries which can be life-threatening. In situations like these, we treat each patient with the same high level of compassion, understanding, empathy and professionalism to quickly relieve pain and suffering, diagnose, and treat, while maintaining good communication with you throughout the process. We are constantly updating our equipment, techniques and building on our combined 70 years of experience in companion animal medicine and surgery. We welcome you and your pets to our practice and hope to see you soon.

Tiki came in for castration last week and deciduous tooth removal.

What Are Deciduous Canines?
Deciduous canines are the temporary, sharp teeth puppies have before their adult canines come in. Typically, these baby teeth fall out naturally as the adult teeth emerge.

Why Might Removal Be Necessary?
Retention Issues- Sometimes, deciduous canines don’t fall out as they should, leading to overcrowding or misalignment of the adult teeth.
Discomfort - Retained baby teeth can cause discomfort or problems with chewing and biting.
Dental disease - Retained teeth will also increase risk of dental disease later in life, due to increased amounts of build-up and tartar between the deciduous and adult tooth.
Removal is done under anaesthesia and often at the same time as desexing.

When to Seek Veterinary Help
Persistent Baby Teeth -If your puppy still has their baby canines after 6 months of age, it’s a good idea to consult with your vet.
Dental Problems - Any signs of pain, difficulty eating, or abnormal dental development should be addressed by a professional.

Keeping on top of your puppy’s dental health early on helps prevent future problems and ensures a lifetime of healthy smiles!

If you have any concerns about your puppy’s teeth, don’t hesitate to reach out to one of our clinics.

🐈 Do you know that Hyperthyroidism is a common but treatable condition that affects many of our feline friends? It is usually caused by a benign, thyroid tumor.

Often these cats will be presented to the clinic for sudden weight loss despite a seemingly good appetite. There may also be increased thirst and urination, vomiting, hyperactivity and the hair coat can appear unkempt, matted or greasy. Another common feature of feline hyperthyroidism is an elevated heart rate.💗

Early diagnosis and treatment of hyperthyroidism addresses these issues and improves your cat's quality of life.

At the Ballarat Veterinary Practice we are able to offer the full range of treatment options from daily medication to radioactive iodine.☢️

If you have any concerns about your cat's health, please give your preferred clinic a call.

⭐️Having a well behaved, well trained dog is a joy for the whole family!

Teaching just a few tricks is a great way to keep your dog mentally and physically stimulated and helps form a deeper bond with your dog. 💕

🐾 The better your dog’s behaviour, the better the interactions your dog will have within your family.

🐶 Furthermore, good training can also improve their safety and quality of life as they navigate the world be it going for a walk or travelling or even going to the vet.

Sit, stay, drop are your dogs’ ABC.

Toileting, walking on a lead, socialising with other dogs politely, good behavior around food are all crucial to having a safe and enjoyable doggo in the family. 🐕

If you need help with your dog’s behavior, we are only a phone call away. We have popped some more info below.👇

🐶 **Why Dog Vaccinations Are a Must!** 🐾

Ensuring our furry friends are up-to-date on their vaccinations is one of the best ways to keep them healthy and happy. Here’s why dog vaccinations are so crucial:

1. **Prevents Serious Diseases:** Vaccines protect dogs from a range of serious illnesses like distemper, parvovirus, canine cough and hepatitis. These diseases can be fatal, but with proper vaccination, the risk is significantly reduced.

2. **Protects Others:** Vaccinating your dog not only safeguards their health but also helps prevent the spread of diseases to other pets. It’s a way to contribute to the overall health of the canine community!

3. **Cost-Effective:** Preventing diseases through vaccination is generally much cheaper than treating them after they occur. A few routine vaccinations can save you from expensive vet bills and intensive treatments later.

4. **Travel and Boarding Requirements:** Many places require proof of vaccination before allowing pets to stay or visit. Keeping your dog’s vaccinations up to date ensures you can travel and board them without any hassle.

5. **Peace of Mind:** Knowing that your dog is protected against various diseases brings peace of mind. You can enjoy their company and adventures without worrying about their health.

Routine vaccinations are a great opportunity for a comprehensive health check. During these visits, your vet can assess your dog’s overall condition, discuss any concerns you might have, and identify any potential issues early on. It's a proactive approach to ensure your dog's well-being and catch any problems before they become serious. If you have specific concerns or notice any changes in behavior or health, it’s always a good idea to bring them up during these visits. 🐕❤️

Let’s keep our four-legged friends safe and sound—make sure their vaccinations are up-to-date! 🌟

Winnie recently came in for a consultation, because she was uncomfortable, drinking a lot and her urine had blood in it.

X-rays showed that she had a stone in her bladder, which required surgery to remove.

Dr Lynda Kitchin performed a cystotomy and removed a stone a little bit smaller than a 5 cent piece.

WARNING: There is a photo mid-surgery on this post.

Missy has been coming to see Dr Santiago with spinal issues.
We had the wonderful team from insightmvd come and visit with their mobile CT set up.
CT scans are normally a specialist form of imaging that requires traveling to Melbourne or Geelong, so Missy was very lucky to be able to have it done here in Ballarat!

When ‘George Russell’ came to our Sturt Street Clinic for his operation, his feet did not touch the ground! So many cuddles, so much TLC!

He was a very brave little man due in no small part to all the reassurance he received from the entire team.

Recently Kiwi the green cheek conure had a accident at home.
She was seen at our Lucas clinic and x-rays were taken.
Unfortunately Kiwi had fractured her tibia.
Dr Richard Lawrence made a splint out of a cotton bud and Elastoplast to keep the leg stable.
He also made a elizabethan collar from a plastic mouse pad to stop her from getting to the splint.
Kiwi is going fine and recovering well and due for a revisit soon to see how it is all healing.

🐈‍⬛ Do you know that dogs and cats over the age of 7 years are considered to be ‘senior citizens?’

💔Older pets are also more prone to heart, kidney, and endocrine (hormone) diseases.

✅ With early detection and monitoring these diseases can be treated and managed allowing your pet to live their best life even in their senior years!

💕Therapy Dogs

🐾 In celebration of ‘Take Your Dog to Work Day’ we wanted to highlight the incredible work of Therapy Dogs, Denver and Cally.

☺️Denver and Cally are Chelle Taylor’s co-therapists at Blossomtree Psychology. Chelle is one of the Directors of Blossomtree and she specialises in the treatment of infants and young children who have not had the best start in life with either trauma or disruption to early relationships.

Denver and Cally, and their new trainee Maple, help support kids to feel safe and loved and provide a non human relationship to practice being in relationship.

This is how they help kids learn to manage all sorts of emotions and practice social skills. They also snuggle and comfort the kids when they are sad or have other big feelings. Denver, Cally and Maple are pretty skilled and special dogs.💕

🙏 Thank you Chelle, Denver and Cally for all that you do in our community.

Denver and Cally’s routine healthcare is proudly supported by Ballarat Veterinary Practice.

🩸Today is World Blood Donor Day!

Do you know that pets rely on blood donations too?

Sometimes we deal with patients who are so severely anaemic or who have lost a large volume of blood quickly, that without a blood transfusion they are at grave risk of dying.

We are very fortunate to have a list of animal blood donors that we can call on should the need arise.

Unlike people, our canine blood donors are lightly sedated during the collection process.

Blood is collected via a needle that is inserted into the large vein in the neck (the jugular) and the blood is collected into a collection bag which contains CPDA. CODA prevents the blood from clotting prior to transfusion.

The collection procedure is quite a quick process and our donors are monitored very closely throughout.

We are so greatful to our blood donors and their owners. Thank you for your generosity and kindness.🙏

Have you ever had a tooth ache?

😢 Do you know that a discoloured tooth can indicate that your pet is in chronic pain?

This beautiful Australian shepherd was brought in to have a thorough dental exam at our Lucas Clinic today after the owners noticed the discolouration to the tip of their dog’s canine tooth.

😱 A discoloured tooth often indicates that the tooth has undergone a traumatic event. If the tooth dies, chronic pain results.

Dr Tom Rampton examined, scaled, polished and radiographed all the teeth and carefully documented underlying pathological changes.

✅ The canine will need to be re examined in the next 6 months with repeat X-rays to ensure it is still viable and pain free.

When was the last time your pet had a dental check up?
