๐ Friday Favourites ๐โ
These are my top 7 favourite tips that anyone can start doing for their dog ๐ Regardless of whether youโre feeding raw, cooked, freeze dried, kibble or canned and regardless of your budget ๐
๐ฆ Tip 1: Before feeding, soak any fruit and veg in 1 part vinegar 3 parts water (or 3% salt solution if you donโt have vinegar on hand) for 5 minutes and rinse to help remove up to 50% of pesticides. This is essential for the dirty dozen, which include strawberries, spinach, kale/collard greens, peaches, pears, nectarines, apples, capsicum, cherries, blueberries and green beans.
๐ Tip 2: Leave the peel on slices of apple as treats. The peel contains the most antioxidant activity. To put it into perspective, 100g of apple with peel has the equivalent antioxidant activity of giving 1500mg of vitamin C.
๐ฅฆ Tip 3: Feed cruciferous vegetables high in sulforaphane like broccoli or broccoli sprouts to reduce the risk of cancer, reduce inflammation and free radical damage. Broccoli sprouts contain 10-100 times more sulforaphane than mature plants. Sprouts are easy to grow yourself at home within a week using broccoli seeds and a mason jar with a cheese cloth or mesh lid. Increasing the sulforaphane content of mature broccoli can be done through finely chopping raw broccoli and allowing to sit for up to 40-90 minutes before lightly steaming for 5mins. Be sure to feed the stalk as well as the head. The above preparation method can also be applied to kale, cabbage, cauliflower and Brussel sprouts too.
๐ Tip 4: When choosing to feed banana to your dog, select unripe green bananas over ripe bananas or cooked banana products (like banana chips). Unripe raw bananas contain more resistant starch which acts as a prebiotic to feed the microbiome and help populate lactic acid producing bacteria.
๐ฆ Tip 5: Give lactic acid based probiotics 20-30mins before a meal rather than with a meal. Not only will the probiotic pass through the stomach quicker, but the stomach acid will also be weaker and enzyme / bile production hasnโt been triggered as digestion has been at rest. This results in a greater proportion of bacteria reaching the small intestine where needed, compared to when the probiotic is take with food or shortly after a meal. The same rule can apply to fermented foods and probiotic dairy.
๐ Tip 6: If your dog is required to take a course of antibiotics, providing yeast based probiotic saccharomyces boulardii DURING and after the course may not just prevent antibiotic associated diarrhoea, but also diminish the overall negative impact the antibiotic has on the microbiota. As saccharomyces boulardii is a yeast based probiotic, it can be given with antibiotics and with food without having its effectiveness compromised.
โป๏ธ Tip 7: Rotate, rotate, rotate! This applies to fresh foods, processed foods and nutritional supplements. Feed a variety of ingredients, interchanging proteins, leafy greens and prebiotic whole food sources. Source fresh foods from a variety of suppliers, change the brand youโre feeding (provided you can find another reputable brand that suits your budget) and change flavours within the same brand as often as practical for you and for your dog. Change where you source your nutritional supplements and rotate between any probiotics that youโre using to promote diversity. Some probiotics are best used with specific purpose and your dog may be better on a variety of prebiotic whole foods rather than on probiotics long term.
