Ballarat-based trainer Mitch Freedman Racing has headed to Perth to put the finishing touches on his G1 winner Attrition (Churchill) ahead of a mission for a second elite-level win in the Northerly Stakes (Gr 1, 1800m) at Ascot on Saturday.

The son of Churchill (Galileo), who won the Hill Stakes (Gr 2, 1900m) at Rosehill in October, was last seen finishing fourth at that track behind Pericles (Street Boss) in the Five Diamonds (Listed, 1800m) last month.

"He's settled in really well," Freedman said. "He just seems to have thrived on travel the whole prep. He's done a few trips now, but it doesn't seem to have affected him."

Attrition will have his final gallop on Tuesday, having had a 1000-metre trial at Belmont last week.

"It was a fast horse's jump-out and he was actually very good, albeit beaten a few lengths by what some people would consider below his standard," Freedman said of his trial effort, where Attrition finished fourth of four.

"He is looking for 1800 or 2000 metres. He has got the freshness out of his legs, but his sectionals were very good and the way he came through it, it was the right thing to do." Beau Mertens, who partnered Attrition to victory in the Toorak Handicap (Gr 1, 1600m) at Caulfield last year and in the Hill Stakes, will ride again on Saturday.

🤩 Full-time stable rider Maddy Rumler has had the pleasure of heading over the border to WA with stable star Attrition, to be with him while he settles in and gears up for the Group 1 Northerly Stakes Day at Ascot on December 7.

Today Attrition waded through the water at Naval Base Horse Beach to cool off, enjoying a roll in the sand to cap off his morning.

Maddy reported he was enjoying the change of scenery and taking it all in his stride, he was full of spirit at the trials he attended upon his arrival.

Scandinella who was previously trained here at Mitch Freedman Racing is looking picture perfect and well adjusted to her new career with Taylah Harrison.

She is loving life with plenty of carrots and cuddles reports Harrison. “She is so brave and incredibly smart, we are learning lateral movements like leg yields, quarters in and shoulder in on the flat. As well as jumping over 60-70cm”.

“During the summer I hope to get out with her a bit more to gain more experience, I am still establishing what she would like to do competition wise before we pursue anything full-time”.

“I would like to see how far up the levels she could go, I’d love to go close to medium level dressage or 1.10m or 1/2* eventing. But I have no doubt she’ll tell me when enough is enough”.
