Important info about gut stasis

🐰 Gut Stasis in Rabbits 🐰

This is darling Navan having a nice snooze in hospital recovering from her bout of Gut Stasis πŸ€’

Rabbits are delicate animals, and one of the most common health issues they face is gut stasis, also known as gastrointestinal stasis (GI stasis). This is a potentially life-threatening condition where the digestive system slows down or stops entirely, leading to a dangerous buildup of gas and toxins.

Gut stasis can happen for many reasons, including stress, dehydration, poor diet, pain, or underlying illnesses. Rabbits rely on a diet high in fiber (like high quality hay and dark leafy greens!) to keep their digestive systems running smoothly, so diets low in fiber or high in sugary treats can be a big risk factor.

Signs to watch for:
βœ”οΈ Loss of appetite or refusal to eat
βœ”οΈ Small, dry, or fewer droppings
βœ”οΈ A bloated abdomen or hunched posture
βœ”οΈ Lethargy or reluctance to move
βœ”οΈ Teeth grinding, a sign of pain

If you notice these signs, don’t waitβ€”gut stasis can escalate quickly. Immediate veterinary care is critical to relieve pain, rehydrate your rabbit, and restart digestion.

Prevention is key! Provide plenty of fresh hay, clean water, and a calm, stress-free environment. Regular checkups help catch issues early.

Did You Know Your Rabbit's Dental Health is Crucial! 🦷🐰

Rabbits are adorable pets, but their dental care is vital for their overall health. Unlike humans, rabbit teeth never stop growing, which means they need regular wear to avoid serious problems like overgrowth and painful dental issues.

😫Signs of Dental Problems:

- Drooling or excessive salivation
- Difficulty eating or weight loss
- Decreased activity level
- Grinding teeth or pawing at the mouth
- Facial swelling or abscesses
- Runny eyes or nose
- Bad breath

🦷 Maintaining Dental Health:

1. Diet: Provide plenty of hay and fresh vegetables like kale, spinach, and carrots. Hay is essential as it helps wear down their teeth naturally. Avoid sugary or starchy foods.
2. Regular Checks: Check your rabbit's teeth and gums regularly for any signs of problems.
3. Chew Toys: Offer chew toys to help keep their teeth healthy and strong.
4. Vet Visits: Schedule regular dental check-ups with us.

Why Teeth Overgrow:
In the wild, rabbits naturally wear down their teeth by chewing on fibrous foods. Domestic rabbits need similar roughage in their diet to maintain healthy teeth. Insufficient hay and an over-reliance on pellets can lead to dental issues.

When to Seek Professional Help:
If your rabbit shows signs of dental problems, don't wait. Early detection and treatment can prevent more serious health issues!

Keep your bunny happy and healthy with proper dental care! πŸŒŸπŸ‡πŸ¦·

How many types of hay do you feed your bunny?
The Rabbit Sanctuary is selling our very own β€œ6 Hay Mix β€œ because we want to share our secret to good bunny health with everyone who has a bunny.

By feeding the rescue rabbits at The Rabbit Sanctuary lots of different hays, they never get sick with gut stasis. They just love their hays which give them a range of various nutrients depending on the individual hay plus the variety of textures helps keep their teeth ground down.

Please consider supporting our Rabbit Rescue by purchasing your bunnies’ hay from our Rabbit Rescue www.RabbitRescue.Shop!
