Grand Strzelecki Track

Grand Strzelecki Track 110km of walking tracks around Tarra Bulga NP and linked to Morwell NP in South Gippsland. Paid and Maps can be purchased at www.grandstrzeleckitrack.org.au

Home to the tallest flowering plants and hardwood trees on earth, the majestic Mountain Ash (Eucalyptus Regnans), is the Strzelecki Ranges in South Gippsland, Victoria which are like no other place. The Strzelecki Ranges provide an enormous wealth of biodiversity and scenic values which, until the Grand Strzelecki Track was built, were largely inaccessible to the public except for two beautiful Na

tional Parks; Morwell and Tarra-Bulga. These parks charm visitors with pristine rainforest and tall eucalypt forests second to none and a proliferation of plant and animal life such as the South Gippsland Koala, which is the only genetically intact remnant of the original population remaining in Victoria. The Grand Strzelecki Track links these parks and opens up many natural treasures not seen within the parks including endangered ecosystems, stunning views, waterfalls and much more. If also offers glimpses into the amazing and sometimes tragic settlement and sawmilling history of the Strzelecki Ranges, as well as recent conservation initiatives to preserve our natural and cultural heritage. Located just 2-1/2 hours drive east of Melbourne and accessible from both the Princes and South Gippsland Highways, the Grand Strzelecki Track has something for everyone whatever you level of fitness or experience. Approximately 110 km of track network provides a challenging but rewarding 2 day Park-to-Park experience or 3 moderate to easy loop walks of 1 to 2 days each, radiating from Tarra-Bulga National Park. Alternatively, take 5 to 7 days to walk the complete track and experience the full diversity of scenery these ranges have to offer.

Cyathea Falls, Tarra Valley by The Gippy Explorer

Distance: 2km
Time: 30 mins

Hands down my favourite walk in the Tarra Bulga area, this walk is beautiful.

The walk begins as you make your way through the big Tarra Valley archway & down the steps. As you wander along the path amongst the cool temperate rainforest, alongside the river, you are never short of a photograph opportunity. The track divides in 2 along the way – East & West Track – they both take you to the falls, you just get a different view on each track. East track is flat whereas the west track has stairs. Of course, the star of the walk is the beautiful waterfall at the end.

One place I would suggest taking a picnic lunch (maybe when it’s warmer), as they have the prettiest picnic tables right next to the river.

Fly agaric (Amanita muscaria) with its bright red top and white spots is a famous and iconic mushroom known around the world. Often shown in fairytale books, movies and games. It is also described as a fungus in some countries, either way,, there are several known variations or subspecies. Believed to be the only mushroom or fungus with psychoactive effects, nonetheless is potentially dangerous, yet edible after parboiling twice with water, then draining...not that we encourage eating it.

It thrives in wet conditions, such as in Balook and Tarra-Bulga National Park. It is not unusual to see it popping up along the roadside and in local garden lawns or near the base of trees.

Those white spots are in fact warts, that can easily be removed by rain.

This video is from Finn Dunn of Fruitless Adventures, who with his partner, recently completed Tarra Valley Loop over two days. Not only did Finn capture some beautiful scenery, but they endured steep terrain, inclement weather and a few leeches along the way, which make up the splendour and conditions of the Track. Thank you, Finn for your contribution.
