Yesterday I had a new client come for their first session. They had been heavily involved in horses for their whole adult life (in a large way, breeding, producing, and competing their horses).
Unfortunately, they had a few rough years after an accident, which left them with a TBI. This person's life revolved around their horses, and they just wanted to be able to get back in the saddle to be whole again.
As someone who has been sidelined a few times from injuries, I understood the physically, and mental toll that this was having on my client, and we created a plan to help them get back in the saddle.
Noddy got the call-up. He is happy to park next to the ramp for minutes or hours, no matter the time frame, he's there, just waiting while we get ourselves sorted to ride.
We stood in the sun at the ramp, Noddy snoozing, and my client and I chatting about the plan and how we would make it happen.
The feelings of knowing how it used to be, how easy it was to swing a leg over and ride off down the road are right there, but physically and mentally we know it's not like that anymore. So we chat some more, until the nerves become lesser, we joke that getting on wouldn't feel as tough as jumping a 1.50m Show Jump- Noddy sighs, "as if" he seems to add to our conversation.
The 1.50m Show Jump works, and they are on! Nodds continues to snooze in the sun - he lives a hard life! There are tears, and I tell my client "I don't do tears, I can bute, bandage, ice and handle blood, but tears are not my thing", they laugh and we continue to stand at the ramp and chat about it all.
After 10 minutes of chatting, settling the nerves, and working up the courage, I take my client for a very slow walk. We probably managed to do 50 metres all up. Noddy moving at a snail pace and us chatting the whole time.
Back to the ramp to get off. It's funny how it's so much easier than getting on. My client gets teary again, and I tell them, "we don't have time for that, Noddy needs his carrots!".
We head back into the barn and sort Noddy, and give him his carrots as promised.
My client was on cloud 9, and couldn't believe how much they had achieved today. Noddy was stoked, he got a sleep in the sun, 3 carrots and did bu**er all.
I love my job because of the people I meet, the connections I make, and how much horses can change people's lives. But this one really hit home, it might have just been one hour out of my day, but to my client, they tackled Mt Everest, and not only did they make it to the summit, they made it home again.
Everyone's got their own mountains to climb, sometimes we just need a good Sherpa to help us get to the top ❤️
