IMPORTANT MESSAGE!

THERE IS A SHORTAGE OF TAT (Tetanus Antitoxin) vaccine in Australia. TAT is administered to your horse when it has a wound or surgery (castration, wound repair, arthroscopy etc) and is not up to date with tetanus vaccination.

TAT provides immediate tetanus cover, whereas Tetanus Toxoid (annual vaccine) takes two weeks to take effect, leaving an unvaccinated horse at risk for that period.

NOW is the time to ensure your horse is up to date with tetanus vaccine!

KISSING SPINE SURGERY

Kissing Spine surgery was performed by Aswin and Ash of our surgical team in our new purpose-built crush.

The horse presented at the clinic with a history of bolting, loss of topline and pain over the back. A clinical examination and radiographs taken showed the horse had evidence of kissing spine.

The first image shows the spinal processes are overriding each other (too close together and touch each other) which can cause behavioural issues and severe back pain.

After a successful surgery, the second image shows that there is now space between them which allows the horse better movement and alleviates pain.

HENDRA ALERT!

ARE YOUR HORSES UP TO DATE WITH THEIR HENDRA VACCINATIONS?

A positive Hendra case has been confirmed in an unvaccinated horse in Cardiff (Newcastle NSW). The horse presented with mild symptoms of depression, nasal discharge, fever and not eating which progressed to collapse and death within 24 hours after vet attendance.

This is the second positive Hendra reported case in the Newcastle NSW region.

Vaccination continues to be the best way to protect your horse and family from Hendra virus.
