Whether it’s booking appointments, answering your questions, or comforting a nervous pet, I’m here to support you every step of the way. Are your canine family members protected from Heartworm?

Did you know there is a 12 month injection that will protect your dog from heartworm?

What is Heartworm: Heartworm disease is a serious disease that results in severe lung disease, heart failure, other organ damage, and death in pets, mainly dogs. It is caused by a parasitic worm called Dirofilaria immitis.

Heartworm disease is spread through the bite of an infected mosquito. Mosquitoes transmit heartworm larvae from an infected animal to a new animal. Once inside the new animal, these larvae mature into adult heartworms, which reside in the heart, lungs, and blood vessels of your pet. Once in the heart and lungs, the adult heartworm can live for several years and reproduce, further damaging your pets organs. A simple blood test can confirm infection.

Treatment is available but prevention is best. Monthly chews that protect against heartworm are also effective as long as you are diligent with staying up to date each month. Refer to the packaging for more information as brands vary from 28-35 days.

Signs to look out for:
🐾Coughing
🐾Exercise intolerance
🐾Difficulty breathing
🐾Stunted growth
🐾Spitting up blood
🐾Blood nose
🐾Fainting

Speak to our clinic today for further information regarding your pets heartworm protection.

We don’t want to sound like a broken record, but... we’re already seeing so many cases of tick paralysis. With the worst of ‘tick season’ still ahead, we are worried!!

This is brave little Arlo, who was almost unrecognisable after his big haircut (but we think he looks super cute 🤗). He came in with a tick, and was already showing the early signs of paralysis, so his fluffy coat had to go while we searched him over carefully for more.

Early symptoms of tick paralysis can be tricky to spot and are often overlooked. Things to watch for include:
▶ Coughing or retching
▶ Vomiting or regurgitating
▶ A change in breathing effort or pattern
▶ Grunting or groaning when breathing out
▶ Wobbly or weak walking
▶ Reluctance to climb stairs or jump up
▶ Lethargy

If you notice any of these signs, it’s safest to have your pet checked straight away👩‍⚕️

⚠️ Prevention saves lives: daily tick searches, keeping the coat clipped short, and up-to-date tick prevention treatments are essential. ✅

Happy International Dog Day! This annual celebration on August 26th honours the bond between humans and dogs, raises awareness for dogs in need of homes, and promotes responsible pet ownership. It was founded in 2004 by pet expert Colleen Paige to encourage dog adoption, support animal shelters, and educate the public on better canine care.

Lets celebrate all the wonderful 4 legged friends in our lives by posting a photo below!

Let me start us off. My name is Leona and I am a student nurse at Bellmere Vet Clinic. I have completed my Certificate II in Animal Care and I am currently studying my Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing. This is Minca my 11 year old Labrador Retriever who is more silver than black these days. Her favourite things to do are sleep upside down on the couch and eat all the snacks! She is my Soul Dog and I cant wait to see yours.

URGENT WINTER Tick Paralysis Alert ‼️

As the weather cools down, pet owners sometimes become complacent with tick prevention for their furry friends! Paralysis ticks can cause serious harm or even death to dogs and cats, including those that stay indoors. Indoor pets can still pick up ticks from you and other pets.

Here at Southern Cross Vets, we see paralysis ticks year round. Over the last month, we have treated cases of tick paralysis nearly EVERY DAY across our clinics. Please keep up with preventatives during the cooler months and act fast if you suspect tick paralysis.

‼️Prevention is Better than Treatment ‼️

🐾Inspect Your Pet Daily: Check all over your pet, including ears, mouth, head, neck, and under their legs, for ticks.

🐾Use Preventatives: Ensure your pet is up to date on a vet-recommended tick prevention.

🐾Act Quickly: If you find a tick, remove it and contact your vet right away.

Symptoms to look out for:

🐾Lethargy
🐾Coughing or change in vocal sounds
🐾Paralysis in back legs
🐾Trouble swallowing
🐾Vomiting or gagging

Today at our Bellmere Clinic, we welcome our wonderful new vet Sarah. Sarah comes to us with a wealth of knowledge and is now our fourth permanent vet for Bellmere. Sarah is a 2017 UQ graduate. She has previously led two GP vet clinics in Brisbane, and has experience as an emergency and house call vet. In 2025, she moved to Bribie Island and on her days off you'll usually find her at the beach with her toddler, on walks with her Labrador Cooper or hanging out at home with her rescued ragdoll cat Patrick.

Again, we welcome you Sarah to our amazing team and look forward to watching you grow within our clinic.

Behind the Scenes: LAB EDITION

Welcome to our lab! This area plays a crucial role in supporting our vets to help analyse, diagnose & monitor the health of their patients through diagnostic testing.

We perform a variety of tests on a range of samples from our patients such as blood, urine, tissue, bacteria & more.

This helps the vets to identify what’s causing issues for your pet & helping them receive the correct treatment.

The last image shows rod-shaped bacteria from an ear slide. These bacteria are not typically found in a healthy ear canal and their presence indicates an infection requiring treatment. We are happy to report our patient was diagnosed and sent home with the correct medication and is now on the mend.
