🌧️ Wet Weather = Ear Infection Season for Dogs! 🐶

Did you know that damp, humid weather can make your dog more prone to ear infections?

Moisture trapped in the ears—especially in breeds with floppy ears—creates the perfect environment for bacteria and yeast to grow.

👉 Watch for these signs:

🐾Head shaking or scratching at the ears

🐾Redness or swelling

🐾Odor or discharge

🐾Sensitivity when you touch their ears

💧 Tips: After walks in the rain or baths, gently dry your dog’s ears with a soft cloth. Regular ear checks and cleanings (as recommended by your vet) can help prevent infections before they start!

If you notice any of these symptoms, give us a call — our team is here to help your pup feel better fast! 🐾❤️

🚨 HEAT STROKE IN DOGS: KNOW THE SIGNS & STAY SAFE! ☀️🐾

Hot weather can be dangerous for our furry friends. Dogs can't cool down like we do, which makes them especially vulnerable to heat stroke — a life-threatening emergency.

🔴 Warning Signs of Heat Stroke:
• Excessive panting or drooling
• Lethargy or weakness
• Vomiting or diarrhea
• Bright red or pale gums
• Collapse or seizures

🐶 Protect Your Pup:

Touch the ground your pup is walking on to ensure it is not hot. If it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for them
✔️ Walk early or late (avoid midday heat)
✔️ Never leave dogs in cars — even for a minute
✔️ Always provide fresh, cool water
✔️ Use shade or cooling mats when outdoors

If you suspect heat stroke, contact us immediately. Time is critical. 🏥

🐾 5 Signs Your Pet Might Be in Pain 🐾

Our furry friends can’t tell us when something hurts — but their behaviour might be trying to!

Here are 5 common signs your pet could be in pain:

1️⃣ Changes in Appetite – Refusing food or treats can signal discomfort.
2️⃣ Limping or Difficulty Moving – Trouble jumping, climbing stairs, or stiffness? Time for a check-up.
3️⃣ Excessive Grooming or Licking – Especially focused on one area — this could mean irritation or pain.
4️⃣ Unusual Aggression or Withdrawal – A normally cuddly pet acting distant or snappy might be hurting.
5️⃣ Vocalizing More – Whining or growling can all be ways of saying “something’s wrong!”

🔍 If you notice any of these signs, don’t wait — pain left untreated can lead to bigger issues.

Lets talk Senior Health Checks 🐶

Dogs are considered seniors between the age of 7-10 years old. Some breeds live into their teens. So, these years should not be overlooked as some of their best. So here is a quick guide to make sure their days are lived out healthy, enriched and comfortable well into their senior years.

When you book your pet in for a wellness check the vet will ask you about their history and their behaviours at home. Including eating, drinking, weight, activity levels and toileting.

*Food. Seniors may require a change in their diet. Speak to your vet about what products are available and monitor your dog while feeding to note any changes.

*Water. Keep fresh water available and monitor your dog while drinking and note any changes like drinking large amounts.

*Dental hygiene. Brush your dogs teeth regularly with a soft brush and Canine Toothpaste or ask your vet about recommended dental chews.

*Grooming. Keep their nails trimmed to avoid slips on the floor. Regular baths will keep their coats shiny but ensure you dry them afterwards.

*Health. Watch for signs of your dog walking slower or having trouble with stairs or jumping.

TIPS FOR HOME

🐾Aim for 30 minutes exercise each day, shorter walks and low impact.

🐾Add runners or mats to your floors to keep your pet from slipping.

🐾Train your dog to use a ramp or staircase if they are having trouble getting up and down.

🐾Provide bedding throughout the home so they can rest their joints.

For further information or concerns please phone our clinic to make an appointment with one of our knowledgeable vets.

Are your canine family members protected from Heartworm?

Did you know there is a 12 month injection that will protect your dog from heartworm?

What is Heartworm: Heartworm disease is a serious disease that results in severe lung disease, heart failure, other organ damage, and death in pets, mainly dogs. It is caused by a parasitic worm called Dirofilaria immitis.

Heartworm disease is spread through the bite of an infected mosquito. Mosquitoes transmit heartworm larvae from an infected animal to a new animal. Once inside the new animal, these larvae mature into adult heartworms, which reside in the heart, lungs, and blood vessels of your pet. Once in the heart and lungs, the adult heartworm can live for several years and reproduce, further damaging your pets organs. A simple blood test can confirm infection.

Treatment is available but prevention is best. Monthly chews that protect against heartworm are also effective as long as you are diligent with staying up to date each month. Refer to the packaging for more information as brands vary from 28-35 days.

Signs to look out for:
🐾Coughing
🐾Exercise intolerance
🐾Difficulty breathing
🐾Stunted growth
🐾Spitting up blood
🐾Blood nose
🐾Fainting

Speak to our clinic today for further information regarding your pets heartworm protection.

We don’t want to sound like a broken record, but... we’re already seeing so many cases of tick paralysis. With the worst of ‘tick season’ still ahead, we are worried!!

This is brave little Arlo, who was almost unrecognisable after his big haircut (but we think he looks super cute 🤗). He came in with a tick, and was already showing the early signs of paralysis, so his fluffy coat had to go while we searched him over carefully for more.

Early symptoms of tick paralysis can be tricky to spot and are often overlooked. Things to watch for include:
▶ Coughing or retching
▶ Vomiting or regurgitating
▶ A change in breathing effort or pattern
▶ Grunting or groaning when breathing out
▶ Wobbly or weak walking
▶ Reluctance to climb stairs or jump up
▶ Lethargy

If you notice any of these signs, it’s safest to have your pet checked straight away👩‍⚕️

⚠️ Prevention saves lives: daily tick searches, keeping the coat clipped short, and up-to-date tick prevention treatments are essential. ✅
