This is a good resource on how to reduce mosquito numbers and limit horse exposure. We are expecting a spike in numbers of Ross River virus/Kunjin/MVE and possibly Japanese encephalitis

The floods have created stagnet breeding grounds for mosquitoes. Effective mosquito management targets all stages of the mosquito life cycle using a combination method called ‘integrated mosquito management’. This is the best way to reduce mosquitoes to protect people & horses.

It involves a combination of:
1. Environmental mgmt to reduce breeding & resting sites inside & out.
2. Larviciding
3. Adultciding
4. Ongoing monitoring & surveillance
5. Record keeping

Corneal ulceration - over the next few days we will share some corneal ulceration images. The green fluorescein stain in the images below shows areas of ulceration in the corneal epithelium (surface of the eyeball). Horses are predisposed to corneal damage because of the position of large eyes on the side of their head, and their sometimes flighty nature. Corneal injuries can be very painful, cause a uveitis and can require urgent treatment to save the eye if they get infected. Prompt assessment is important, and commonly an offending grass seed awn is still lodged in the conjunctiva and rubbing on the cornea. Often these are not visible until the horse sedated and the socket explored. The horse in the first image had a hidden tail of a barley grass awn causing the ulceration.
