Fun Fact Friday ๐Ÿพ

Roosters prevent themselves from going deaf due to their own loud crowing, by tilting their heads back when they crow, which covers their ear canals completely, serving as built in ear plugs!

A study shows that their crows average over 100 decibels, which is roughly the same a running a chainsaw!

Meet 'Mannequin' ๐Ÿพ

Mannequin was admitted to the clinic on Monday evening after her owner noticed she was having trouble urinating properly.

Upon examination and after performing an ultrasound, we found that Mannequin had a large bladder stone or 'urolith' taking up a significant portion of her bladder. Often, bladder stones can be the result of diets containing high levels of magnesium, calcium and phosphorus where urinary crystals that the stone is composed of, supersaturate the urine and form large stones. Unfortunately, a bladder stone that size was unable to be dissolved through nutrition changes, so Mannequin required surgery for the bladder stone to be removed.

A 'Cystotomy' was performed where her bladder was incised in order to remove the bladder stone.

Mannequin was sent home on special urinary food to prevent the recurrence of more stones forming in the future. We are pleased to report that Mannequin is doing very well two days post-op and is already able to urinate normally again ๐Ÿ˜€

Meet 'Sadie' ๐Ÿฅฐ

Sadie is a young Australian Shepherd who was diagnosed with left elbow dysplasia after showing signs of lameness and discomfort. Elbow dysplasia is an 'umbrella term' for a genetic condition describing the abnormal development of the elbow joint.

Surgical intervention was required in the form of an 'ulna osteotomy' where part of the ulna was removed in order to take pressure off the elbow joint and therefore prevent osteoarthritis and allow the radius to grow to improve the conformation of the leg.

A fat graft was harvested from the gluteal region and placed in the space where the ulna was resected in order to prevent the ulna reuniting to allow the radius more time to grow.

Pictured below is Sadie one month post-op and progressing well following her surgery ๐Ÿ™‚

It's not every day you get to see a platypus up this close! ๐Ÿ˜

Yesterday a kind member of the public brought a platypus into the clinic that they had found in a carpark away from the water and her usual habitat.

Upon examination, we found that the platypus was a juvenile female and was quite underweight. We administered fluids under the skin to improve her hydration and gave her some delicious worms and yabbies to eat (although she much preferred the worms) and then sent her to Healesville Sanctuary for further care ๐Ÿฅฐ

โ€ผ๏ธ ATTENTION CLIENTS โ—๏ธ IMPORTANT NOTICE โ€ผ๏ธ

There is an outbreak of Parvovirus in the Benalla West area.

We have had a number of positive Parvovirus cases in the last couple of days originating from the Benalla West area.

If your dog is unvaccinated, avoid taking them off your property, to any dog parks or allowing them to interact with unvaccinated dogs.

The only guaranteed prevention for Parvovirus is through annual vaccination. We highly recommend that you check your dog's vaccination status and see if they are up to date.
Canine Parvovirus is a highly contagious and life-threatening viral disease that causes an array of symptoms such as:

โžก๏ธLethargy
โžก๏ธLoss of appetite
โžก๏ธVomiting
โžก๏ธSevere bloody diarrhoea
โžก๏ธAbdominal discomfort

Parvovirus is spread through direct contact with an infected dog or by indirect contact with a contaminated object. It can live on contaminated surfaces such as signposts, garbage bins, dog toys, bedding or bowls for up to 9 months and in the soil for many years.

Tomorrow is going to be a scorcher! โ˜€๏ธ

Below are some tips for keeping your pet cool! ๐Ÿฅต

COMPANION ANIMALS:

๐Ÿ”น Make sure your pet has access to shade at all times. Ideally, bring your pet indoors on really hot days.

๐Ÿ”น Small pets such as rabbits, guinea pigs and birds typically suffer more during the heat. If possible, bring these animals indoors. If this is not possible, drape their cage with wet towels and provide them with an ice pack or cold water bottle to lean against to help regulate their body temperature. Make sure enclosures are not in the direct sunlight and kept in the shade throughout the day.

๐Ÿ”นProvide plenty of fresh cool water in large water containers.

๐Ÿ”นPlace a shell pool in the shade and fill it with water so your pet can wade in the water to keep cool.

๐Ÿ”นTry to avoid walking your pet during the hot part of the day. Be wary of hot footpaths and bitumen roads as they can burn your petโ€™s paw pads. If you canโ€™t place your hand on the surface for 5 seconds, then itโ€™s too hot to walk your pet.

HORSES AND LIVESTOCK:

๐Ÿ”นMake sure horses and livestock have access to shade at all times.

๐Ÿ”นConsider taking summer rugs off horses on really hot days. Being large animals, horses need airflow to keep cool and summer rugging in high temperatures can cause them to overheat.

๐Ÿ”นProvide extra water for your horses and livestock. On average, horses can drink over 20L of water a day and this can increase four times that amount during hot weather! Check water troughs frequently. (At least twice a day).

ANIMALS IN HOT CARS:

๐Ÿ”นNever leave your pet in the car in warm weather. It only takes minutes for an animal to suffer if left in a hot car. If you see an animal locked in a hot car, immediately phone the police on 000.

Stay cool everyone! ๐Ÿ˜Ž

๐Ÿ’ŠParacetamol toxicity in cats๐Ÿ’Š

Although Paracetamol (Panadol) is a common human analgesic and usually the first thing you reach for when you have a headache or fever, it is highly toxic to our feline friends ๐Ÿฑ

Cats are simply unable to metabolise Paracetamol, which creates a build up of toxins that can seriously damage the liver and red blood cells which may lead to death.

Do not give your cat Paracetamol and make sure you keep your human medications out of reach or locked away to prevent accidental ingestion.

If you think your cat needs pain relief medication, please seek veterinary advice as to what is best suited for your cat ๐Ÿˆ

Is your dog or cat 'Beransa' or 'Solensia' deficient?

We have recently been offering a new form of arthritis management medication to our senior patients called Beransa for dogs or Solensia for cats ๐Ÿฑ๐Ÿถ

Beransa and Solensia are both monthly injections which provide relief from arthritic pain through 'monoclonal antibody therapy.' The injections target 'nerve growth factor,' which is a pain receptor in the joints to alleviate pain. Blocking these receptors allows us to block the pain messages from being delivered, therefore helping with pain relief and inflammation in the joints. Beransa or Solensia can resolve pain signs and also reduce inflammatory messengers to reduce the progression of arthritis in the joints.

Book an appointment with one of our Veterinarians to discuss whether Beransa or Solensia might be a good option for your old friend!

Simply phone the clinic on 03 5762 6888 and speak with one of our friendly staff ๐Ÿ˜Š

Here at Rose City Vets, you never know what might come through the door! ๐ŸฆŽ

Last week, one of our local wildlife carers brought in a Lace Monitor Lizard for assessment.

The 'Goanna' had been found lethargic and unable to climb a tree ๐ŸŒฒ

Upon examination, we found that he was dehydrated and underweight due to a wound on his tongue. The Goanna received fluids under the skin and a good feed and was feeling much more spritely the following day (complete with hissing and whipping Nurse Rhi in the face with his tail!) ๐Ÿ™Š

Nurse Di, kindly took 'Cornelius' to The Beechworth Correction Facility where they have a large wildlife rehabilitation centre. We hope Cornelius will be able to thrive in his new home where he will be given a special diet to accommodate for the injury to his tongue ๐Ÿฅฐ
