To help our new father to take care of his many new fry, we have moved him to a temporary tank. Much smaller and clearer to help him see his baby’s as they sneak away from the nest lol

He quickly adapted to his temporary holding, tending to his baby’s and placing the few that had fallen back into their nest.

Fish Fact Friday!
Todays Fish Fact Friday we’re going to be sharing about is Swordtails!

A few pieces of information;
Their scientific name is ‘Xiphophorus Hellerii’ and they’re from the family group Poeciliidae. Commonly they’ll live about 3-5 years, but with the right care they can live over seven years!

They’re a great addition to community tanks, though the males can be a little aggressive with one another, as a general rule, we recommend two females to every one male in the aquarium to ease any tension.
Swordtails grow about 3-5 inches, with only the larger fish growing to about 6 inches.

Swordtails are omnivores and will happily graze on algae growing throughout the aquarium. They reach s*xual maturity between 4 months and 20 months of age, and they’re a Livebearer, which means they give birth to live babies, they give birth regularly, their pregnancies last between 28 and 36 days at a time, they can have a litter of anywhere between 20 and 180 babies at one time! How crazy is that?

Did you know;
Swordtails originally came from Mexico and Northern Central America?

Swordtails can also change their s*x. A female swordtail who has previously given birth can change into a fully functional male. But males can not change into a female. Although this can occur occasionally, it doesn’t commonly happen.

Here at Lucy’s Aquatics, we try our best to raise healthy, happy fish, that are easily part of the family. These baby’s are particularly very friendly and love it when you come over to say hello.
Here’s our 2 and a half month old red painted swordtails.

Here is one of our beautifully matured, one and a half year old male ‘Velvet pineapple’ swordtails.
