Ear mites are a common cause of ear inflammation or otitis externa, especially in young cats and kittens
The most common ear mite found in cat's ears are Otodectes cynotis. These tiny, eight-legged parasites feed on the oils and wax in the ear canal and can be spread between cats.
Symptoms can include excessive scratching and itching around the ears, head shaking, hair loss around the ears, black/brown wax secretions, inflammation of the ear, and foul odour coming from the ears.
Ear mites can be diagnosed by your veterinarian by examining the internal ear canal and by examining a swab of the ear under a microscope to identify the mites (as seen in the video above).
