An educational post about how ethical breeders make decisions about keeping a puppy!

To decide who we as breeders keep is not simple. There are a few factors involved.

1. Structure & movement. Looking at shoulder blade angles, angularity of joints, length of bones, length of body & ribs. We are trying to assess their biomechnics, weight distribution & joint stability.
If a dog isn't structured correctly, it won't function correctly & efficiently. This could lead to early arthritis/ IVDD. We watch for puppies who move with powerful, flowing strides.
In a breed predisposed to back problems, it's absolutely essential for breeders to assess structure & movement, not choosing a pup for looking cute or being a unique colour.
2. Temperament. Research shows a strong inheritance pattern (up to 60%) of personality traits from parents. We watch puppies as they grow to see how they interact between themselves & others, independence, reactivity, more open to trying new things. Breeders need to pick a puppy that is robust temperament that is "intelligent, lively, courageous to the point of brashness, obedient" as per the breeding standard. (don't always get the last one lol)
3. Genetics & pedigrees
The Reindeer litter is what we call an "outcross." It's a combination of two completely different bloodlines, so there's a lot of genetic diversity, & thus, a lot of diversity in how each pup looks compared to one another.
Most preservation breeders will aim to "line breed," essentially a type of inbreeding, which focuses on breeding along a particular pedigree lineage. The aim is to produce offspring that are more predictable in structure & temperament, so it can be really powerful for enabling most pups to consistently be "built" a certain way. This has to be balanced with ensuring there isn't too much inbreeding where there's an increased risk of congental & genetic disorders.

I've attached some pics of this current litter. All chocolate, but most look quite different between one another, getting various amounts of DNA expressed from each parent.
