This Lace Monitor came into BAH after being hit by a car recently.

After a health assessment by our vet's, it was discovered there was substantial head trauma and he was unfortunately not able to be saved.

It's important to keep an eye out for wildlife while on our roads as sadly they are too often involved with road incidents πŸ˜”

Did you know Lace Monitors can grow up to 2 meters in length and have an extremely nasty bite!

If you see one in the wild, do not approach them.

If they are injured, keep an eye on them from afar and call a wildlife carer to collect. Only if instructed by the wildlife carer and you are able to safely secure them in a container for transport to a vet clinic do so πŸ™‚

Don't let your pets suffer in the heat!

Our top tips:

- Always provide plenty of shaded areas. These should be in different spots around the property so when the sun moves they can still have shade.

- Have multiple clean water sources available for pets and wildlife at all times.

- Do not walk pets in the heat of the day. If they must be walked, walk them either in the early morning or late afternoon when it is at its coolest. Pets can overheat quickly and struggle to cool down.

- Always check pavement temperature before going for a walk during summer by placing the back of your hand on the pavement for at least 10 seconds. If it is too hot for your hand, it is too hot for their paws.

- Ute trays and fake turf hold on to heat. Avoid taking pets on these during hot days as they can burn pets paws. Always test the temperature with the back of your hand for at least 10 seconds before they go onto it.

- Cars heat up quickly. Never leave a pet unattended in a vehicle, especially in summer. Pets die in cars. In as little as 5 minutes without air conditioning a pet can show signs of heat stress which could be deadly.

- Freeze treats or food in water. This can then be given to pets on warm days providing entertainment for them as well as helping to cool them down.

- Shell pools placed in the shade can help your pet cool down on hot days.

- Cool down pets by placing wet towels on their backs or have them lay on them.

Always remember if you feel as though your pet is suffering from heat stress please seek veterinary medical attention as soon as possible by calling BAH on 03 5443 3322

NEVER leave a pet in a car during the summer months!
Cars heat up very quickly without air-conditioning!
Within just 5 minutes a car can reach heat stroke temperatures for your pet which may be fatal.

When traveling in warmer weather always consider if your pet needs to go in the car and if so avoid the heat of the day and never leave them unattended.

Signs of heat stress include:
- panting
- collapse
- vomiting
- diarrhoea
- going off their food
- pale or very red gum line
- restlessness

Brachycephalic breeds (animals with a short muzzle) such as pugs, pekingese and mastiffs will feel the heat more than other animals, as they can not cool themselves as well by panting.

If you feel as though your pet is suffering from the effects of heat stroke seek veterinary medical attention immediately by calling the clinic on 03 5443 3322

Hermaphrodites

Meet Shelby! πŸ€—
Shelby is a hermaphrodite!
Hermaphrodites are rare to see! As you can see in the picture, Shelby has both a v***a and a sc***um!

What is a hermaphrodite?
A hermaphrodite is something which has both sets of gametes. Gametes are the reproductive cells which in females is know as 'ova' or 'egg cells' and males is known as 's***m'.

When Shelby is old enough to be desexed, in large breeds we recommend 12 months, an ultrasound will be performed to check for a uterus and all reproductive organs will be removed.

It is recommended to desex pets who are hermaphrodites and not breed with them as their is a higher than 50% chance of the gene being passed onto the litter.

Shelby you are adorable! 😍

Lenny recently came in for a dental procedure! He was such a lovely boy all cozy in his blankets we had to share his picture 😍

Poor Lenny required a dental as he had what is called a slab fracture!
A slab fracture means that Lenny had potentially bitten something too hard, such as a rock or old bone, which had cause him to break his tooth 😞

The problem tooth was removed by Dr Chris and Lenny is now much more comfortable πŸ₯°

πŸ˜… The moment of pause before the stampede! 😍

This litter of Whippet puppies recently came in for their first vaccination and microchip to be implanted so they can be ready to find loving homes!

Did you know to sell a dog or cat in Victoria the pet must be microchipped?
This is a government initiative to control backyard breeding which often leads to poor living conditions for the pet producing the litters and long term health concerns for the puppy or kitten 😞

Having a pet microchipped and your details up to date is very important!
If your pet becomes lost or escapes and becomes injured, the first thing a vet clinic or ranger will do is check for a microchip to be able to contact the owner as soon as possible!

You can check your pets microchip details by calling Central Animal Records on 03 9706 3187 or visit their website at www.car.com.au

To check if your pet had a microchip or retrieve the microchip number, call your regular vet clinic and make an appointment with a authorised microchip implanter πŸ™‚
